++ Jessica Jones's second season premieres on March 8th, 2018! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

++ We have a new Deadpool teaser, or, rather at least another marketing for the sequel since there isn't any new footage. Which considering their genius marketing strategy expect more of these kinds of advertisements for the film to come out between now until the movie premieres. This one is dedicated to the fans in Brazil. Also, I do believe that is Morena Baccarin doing the Portuguese voiceover, since she is Brazilian and speaks it fluently as evident in various interviews. Plus I recognized her voice. Plus it makes sense, she's in the films, so why wouldn't she contribute to the marketing in some form or another.

++ Richard Armitage has been quite busy lately himself, with some exciting upcoming projects. Berlin Station has been renewed for a third season, he is recording the audiobook for The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris (which judging by the author's reaction she is quite pleased with him recording for her book), and it's also been announced that he is cast as Wolverine in the new scripted podcast that Marvel is developing. I find this utterly fascinating because I've been hearing people say that Richard and Hugh Jackman kinda look alike, so even though it's only audio this makes me chuckle a bit, but I'm also intrigued and interested with what he'll be doing with the character. Let's not forget that the second season of Castlevania will be out next year, along with him making an appearance in Ocean's Eight. And along with all of this, I'm just very happy for him. He's been doing very well in recent years, not that he wasn't doing well before, but he's been getting a lot of work and being a fan of Richard ever since The Hobbit I'm just very happy and proud that he is continually getting work and doing what he loves and enjoys.

++ Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors is going to be an animated film exploring more of the Marvel characters teaming up with each other, most of them are, indeed, women characters. Chloe Bennet is reprising her role as Daisy Johnson in this, which I think is fantastic. Ming-Na Wen is also cast in this, plus the rest of the cast looks amazing as well.

++ So, I vaguely watched Sabrina the Teenage Witch when it was on during my teen years (though it made enough impression on me that I dressed up as her for Halloween during junior high), but I wasn't aware that her character was part of the Archie Comics. This revelation, of course, was brought on when the news that Netflix has ordered two seasons for adapting their own Sabrina the Teenage Witch series, based off of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comics. Originally meant to be adapted for CW as a companion to Riverdale, the move to Netflix is actually much better because this gives more room and freedom to go into darker territory as the comics imply. Now I haven't read the comics, but it has gotten me very curious of what to expect.

++ Apparently FX is going to be adapting Welcome To Night Vale into a television show. I...don't know what to make of this news, to be honest. One of the best parts with the podcast was allowing the audience to use their imaginations, which the creators have reiterated time and again was the major point of not making confirming any kind of physical appearances of characters, especially Cecil, and it's what kept the fandom thriving with the many discussions, fanart, fanfiction, cosplays, etc. I fear that having it become a television show would lose the magic of what the podcast created, not just with such a vast and expansive world but also the diversity of the characters, especially the LGBT aspect which has been an incredibly important part of the podcast. I would only accept this if the creators behind the podcast had complete creative control without any kind of meddling from network executives. Otherwise, my stance remains rather on the fence about this whole thing. It's not that I don't think it's impossible to adapt it on a visual format and I'm not trying to be negative especially if they're willing to experiment and branch out to other mediums, but for something as innovative and unique as WTNV in matters of storytelling, characters and world-building, it has to be done just right without fucking it up. On the other hand, perhaps I'm looking at this at the wrong angle. Perhaps it won't be a direct adaptation but rather just adapting the existence of that world, where Cecil isn't shown but is more of a disembodied voice over the radio and the show will be more about individual citizens living in Night Vale and the regularly bizarre occurrences that happen there. That I can see being more workable. Overall, it's like with the whole Lord of the Rings television series situation, the possibilities are endless but it needs to be the right fit and done by those who understand the source material at its core.

However, I will say this has got me to thinking about how this little podcast that started many years ago, rose in popularity due to it being circulated about on Tumblr, and how it has just expanded beyond anything the audience and the creators could have ever imagined, including doing live shows of the podcast, publishing books, and now a television show in development. WTNV has become quite a cult phenomenon in its own right and, while I still have to catch up on episodes myself, I'm actually pretty proud to have been there since the beginning.

So many great news! ^__^

When I heard that Richard Armitage had been cast as Wolverine, I totally thought of you.

I am very excited about Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors. Glad to see Tyler Posey is in this, I hope he'll have a nice post-Teen Wolf career.

I loved Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Not sure if I want to see a dark version or not. I'll decide once there's a trailer.

I've never listened to WTNV, because I'm not big on the audio-only format, so I'm curious about a TV show. But it makes sense that fans of the podcast would be wary.

I know, right?! I was just planning on updating on just a few things, but then more fannish news started pouring out today and I was just like, aahhh! Amazing, but omg.

When I heard that Richard Armitage had been cast as Wolverine, I totally thought of you.

Awww! Glad to know my obsession is known by some. ;)

I never watched Teen Wolf but I know that Tyler Posey was so underappreciated on that show (despite being the lead, wtf) so I also hope that this is one of many amazing projects he'll be doing after that show. And I'm just very pleased with the cast line-up for that.

I've never listened to WTNV, because I'm not big on the audio-only format, so I'm curious about a TV show. But it makes sense that fans of the podcast would be wary.

I sort of added a little bit to the post because I didn't want to seem too negative, because I don't think the creators would agree to do something like this if they didn't think they could tell more interesting stories in another medium outside of their podcast. Similar to why they wrote books about this world, they can venture to the world on the small screen and tell stories that aren't necessarily a direct adaptation of the podcast itself but more exploring that world that they created in a visual format. I can see that working rather well. It won't take away the magic that the podcast brings and even introduce more people to the podcast.

If you have the time, I do suggest listening to at least the first episode of WTNV just to get the sense of the feel of what drew people to the podcast in the first place. It's very strange and unique, and Cecil's voice will mesmerize you and probably lull you to sleep. Of course, the Cecil/Carlos relationship development happens a little later on, which is glorious and beautiful and adorable in itself with how that occurs.

Was there a convention or something to explain all the news? I'm also excited that we're finally getting a Black Spider-Man on the big screen! :D

Yeah, most of the fandom was obsessed with Sterek, which wasn't even based on much, and hardly anybody cared about Scott/Isaac (or Scott/Stiles, or any pairing involving Scott).

What you said made sense, I didn't feel it was rooted in negativity.

I don't think so? I think it's more like it being the end of the year and just doing a whole bunch of announcements for upcoming projects for 2018 and beyond. Which I'm not complaining about at all! I'm excited for some of them, for sure. I just looked up the trailer for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and I'm definitely here for this! The animation looks amazing.

Yeah, I've heard a lot of drama surrounding that fandom (and the show itself) for various reasons, which is why I stayed away. It sucks that Tyler Posey didn't get enough recognition, but I'm hoping he does well with other projects.

What you said made sense, I didn't feel it was rooted in negativity.

Thank you. I just felt like I just put too much emphasis on voicing my concerns and not enough thinking objectively about the concept of a television series, which I thought more clearly after I initially wrote the post. So it wasn't necessarily about sounding too negative but more just being knee-jerk reactionary and not with a more open-mind. That's all. But thank you for saying that it wasn't too negative initially, that makes me feel a bit better.

So much to look forward to, wow.

So much love for WtNV. I don't normally listen to podcasts but my bff pimped it to me back when there were only a dozen eps and I followed it for till about ep 55, then I decided to wait till I had a whole bunch to watch together and haven't got back to it because I was listening when I was driving regularly and now I don't drive much. also I forgot. I am very happy to see how many there are now! So that's for after Yuletide :)

I did schedule a trip to visit my bff in Melbourne a couple of years ago to coincide with a live show and that was heaps of fun - majority younger fans, but also a surprising range of ages, and most people dressed up.

I hadn't considered your points about making it into a tv show, but now I'm wondering if I should bother watching it - do I want my mental images of everything permanently altered?

I remember when WTNV was being recommended all over Tumblr, and I was curious enough to check it out. And I was so glad I did. It was small and obscure with only a handful of episodes at the time, so the fact that I've seen this little podcast grow from its beginnings and expand and I'm so proud. I've never been to one of the live shows but I've heard that they are a blast.

I hadn't considered your points about making it into a tv show, but now I'm wondering if I should bother watching it - do I want my mental images of everything permanently altered?

It's one of those things to ponder, isn't it? The podcast creates a fantastic atmosphere all on its own, it allows your imagination to wonder, to create your own interpretation of that world. It's the same conundrum that most fans have whenever an adaptation of their favorite book is being made. It's a risk of having what you already envisioned in your mind ruined or altered by the adaptation.

Yay for Jessica Jones!!!!

I didn’t know either Sabrina was in the Archie Universe... doesn’t make a lot of sense... I remember the show and it was cute! I am curious about what netflix is going to do with it... the girl who plays Veronica would be perfect for the role with these evil eyebrows... seriously I cannot get over them... they need to do something about it LOL

Well, looking at the character's extensive history (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabrina_Spellman), it does make sense considering her character was created and featured in the comics in the 1960s, which spawned more focus on the character (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabrina_the_Teenage_Witch) in various incarnations. I only knew of the 90s Sabrina the Teenage Witch with Melissa Joan Hart and didn't realize that her character was based off of a 1960s comic. It's quite interesting, really. I'm definitely intrigued with what Netflix is going to do with the character and her story, the feel and tone is going to be massively different. From what I've read, it's going to be more of a re-imagining of the character and her origins, so I'm very curious.

I'm really happy for Richard. For awhile I thought things might be slowing down for him, but I'm glad he's in so many things. His voice work is amazing: I couldn't believe that was him in Castlevania! It showed a different, lighter side to him which he hasn't ever really been able to play.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz sounds like a really good book. Any idea when the audiobook will be released?

I've been following his career ever since The Hobbit, and I've been very happy that he's remained quite busy. He does smaller projects here and there, but then there will be roles he gets that are so pleasantly unexpected. I remember being so ecstatic when he was cast to be in the third season of Hannibal, because that was a show I was already watching and being interested in. And when I heard he was voicing Trevor Belmont in Castlevania that caught me entirely by surprise too. I was like Richard, in an anime?! Holy crap! Which I agree, it was such a delight hearing him being playfully snarky and sarcastic in a way that we haven't before. Just hearing him wheezing out, "please leave my testicles alone!" made me laugh.

He's mostly been doing a lot of audiobooks for Audible, along with theater work (The Crucible and Love, Love, Love, and will possibly return to the theater sometime in the near future) and independent films. And being part of Berlin Station has been a treat, as well. So I'm glad that he's doing well for himself because he's so incredibly talented, and doesn't get nearly enough recognition for what he does imho.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz sounds like a really good book. Any idea when the audiobook will be released?

From the looks of things, probably at the end of January. And it seems that can even pre-order the audiobook (https://www.audible.com/pd/Fiction/The-Tattooist-of-Auschwitz-Audiobook/B0765C5V87/ref=a_search_c4_1_1_srTtl?qid=1512907274&sr=1-1) right now.

I first became aware of him back in...2006 or so thanks to Robin Hood. Oh lord, it's a terrible show and he was the only saving grace. Then saw him in North and South and was elated to find out he was cast in the Hobbit. As a hardcore Tolkien fan, I wasn't impressed with the movies...but he did a good job with what he was given. Wasn't the Crucible filmed? That seems like one of those roles made for him.

Forty bucks for an audiobook?? Is that what they go for? I'll probably do the free trial when it comes out then, ha.

From: [identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com
I've watched Robin Hood after seeing that he was in it and goodness, it's so terrible, like perhaps the first season was entertaining in a nonsensical way but then second and third seasons were just plain bad writing. Richard was great for what he was given though, I thoroughly enjoyed his Guy of Gisborne. He can rock leather and that guyliner really well. I unabashedly love The Hobbit films, so so much. Are they perfect? No, but it was still fun and enjoyable and I love them so much. Thorin was how I first noticed Richard in the first place, so perhaps I'm a bit biased in that sense. ;)

Wasn't the Crucible filmed? That seems like one of those roles made for him.

Yeah it was, which you could purchase digitally from the Old Vic website. Though since they changed something on the site some have claimed it's not really accessible anymore even for those who paid for it, so idk what's going on with that. But I remember following everything that happened when he was performing The Crucible years ago, and he seemed to really enjoy being back on the stage.

Forty bucks for an audiobook?? Is that what they go for? I'll probably do the free trial when it comes out then, ha.

Sadly, yeah. It's why I don't buy audiobooks as much because the prices are absolutely ridiculous. I either wait until the price is reduced or if something is made temporarily free which some of them have been from time to time.

The first season was really fun, and I think everyone understood and knew it was campy. However, there was such a tonal shift with the second season. It was like, everyone decided it was far more intense and dramatic than it really was. I was so angered how they had Gisborne kill Marian: it was so out of character and utterly destroyed two seasons of growth. They could've have had her die any other way and not destroy the best character on the show. Plus those costumes. Marian's yellow hoodie?? S3 was laughable. They have a half brother? I'm laughing even writing this.

Date: 2017-12-12 02:31 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com
Yeah, and didn't the third season write out two characters without much explanation? And then they brought in a new character to be kind of a replacement Marian, which the writing for her was downright horrendous. I mean, they didn't even have to kill Marian off, but they did anyway and the moment they do, bam! Another female character to take her place! That show was all over the place and just laughably wholly bad as it continued on.

To be fair, I only watched the show because of Richard. I knew going in that it wasn't going to be good, but just witnessing it with my two eyes was an experience.

Same. I knew that S2 was happening it was just a matter of when, because it's been for-freaking-ever since the first season premiered and Netflix had to get all the other Marvel shows out, including The Defenders, before Jessica Jones could get its second season which kinda sucks when you think about. I hope that it doesn't wait that long for S3.

From: [identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com
From what I've seen there's been a lot of mixed reactions to this news, which is understandable because having a podcast be turned into a television series is rather a risky move and it could so easily be mishandled and done wrong. It can be hard to fathom how this would even translate well from one medium to another, particularly a podcast. But that is true with pretty much all adaptations of anything. A story can be translated and told through different mediums in different ways, it's just how well it respectfully stays true to the heart and soul of the source material.

It's an interesting thing because I've seen people who have never listened to WTNV because podcasts aren't their thing, but are actually curious about the idea of the television show. It might even bring more people to listen to the podcast. So, even of some WTNV fans aren't necessarily going to be watching the show for whatever reason, the show may even bring in more newcomers to the podcast itself. I guess only time will tell what happens.

Yeah, I watched it (rather sporadically) but it wasn't something that I was attached to. It was just more well known back then. I would love to see a brand new take on the character, for the show to be less of a sitcom and more of a drama, especially going more down the of being darker in tone and theme of her origins.

I'm not sure how a Welcome to Night Vale show will translate from the podcast to an actual show. I'll give it a try and I really hope they create something that's as fun to watch as the show is to listen to.

Same here. It's not impossible, because they have written books within that universe so expanding the world outside of the podcast isn't improbable. It just has to be handled just so in order for that to make it work. I want to believe that they know what they're doing and that they can create something new and fresh based on the podcast but still existing in that world.

I don't know whether they'll be including Salem or not, since this it's said to be more or less a re-imagining of Sabrina's origins, and if it's going to be more on the darker side then idk how they would do the talking cat aspect, unless it's done either telepathically or have him be like the Cheshire Cat in American McGee's Alice. But it's still in the early stages so we'll have to wait and see what happens.

YESSSS JJ HAS A S2 DATE!

I thought that Secret Warriors was the project that Marvel scrapped? Or was that Inhumans?

WTNV is weird because the medium itself is crucial to the narrative both in the sense that it's a radio show presented as a (modern) radio show. It's not like a musical, but an audio only style that doesn't need/have a visual element to it. That said, I think what might happens is that the podcast and show just occupy firmly different spaces- there's a lot you can't explore by audio alone, for example.

IKR? IT'S BEEN 84 YEARS!!

I thought that Secret Warriors was the project that Marvel scrapped? Or was that Inhumans?

I believe that was Inhumans. It was originally meant to be a movie but that didn't happen due to complications, so it got turned into a really crappy and cheap show that recently premiered and nobody watched.

It makes sense that Secret Warriors would have its own thing because it was briefly introduced in Agents of Shield with Daisy organizing the initiative during the third season and I think this brought in some interest with it becoming an animated film. Granted, I do want a Secret Warriors spin-off from AOS, with Daisy leading the team that she initially created. But regardless, I love that they got Chloe to voice Daisy in the animated film.

That said, I think what might happens is that the podcast and show just occupy firmly different spaces- there's a lot you can't explore by audio alone, for example.

Yeah, that's my thought as well. The podcast has a very distinctive way of storytelling through Cecil's radio show, but while that is descriptive and amazing with allowing the audience to use their imaginations it is still very limiting and if there is a chance to explore more of that world that cannot be done through audio then it is worth taking. I think if the show were to focus on the residents of Night Vale, perhaps like a Twilight Zone-esque style of doing episodic stories of the weird and bizarre happenings in the town would be rather interesting.

lol, I think it's a very common thing to see people saying how behind they are with the podcast. Like you said, if the creators have a lot of creative control, it would likely be better than if they don't.

I read that they've been planning something like this for a couple of years now, so it wasn't a spontaneous decision from money-hungry executives. In a way, it makes sense that this would be expanded beyond the podcast, since they kinda already started. They've had books out and everything, telling the story in a different format, so for them to do a television show would be the most likely next step (although a webseries would've probably been a more appropriate choice as to coincide with the online/digital medium, but that's probably just me). So I'm curious to see what happens.

I hadn't heard about a Marvel podcast. I'm definitely interested in that. And more Castlevania for sure.

I don't really think tv is a logical fit for WTNV, though I suppose they could make it work somehow. I think its best to listen driving in the evenings, so it really feels like you could ne listening to an actual raido news show.

I think as a direct adaptation, it probably wouldn't work. But audio in itself is restrictive of the world it is presenting, and if there is another angle they could tell that doesn't ruin the podcast experience but rather enhances it, then that would be good. Apparently the creators of the podcast have been planning this move for a couple of years now, so I am trusting that they know what they're doing.

WTNV at this point is more than just a mere podcast, and if the creators feel like it can extend that universe further beyond that with more stories in that world just in a different way (while still connecting to Cecil's radio show in some fashion) then that is great.
