It appears that Netflix not only cancelled The Get Down, it also cancelled Sense8.

I'm extremely upset about Sense8 in particular because I'm still making my way through the second season and it is just so damn good, it's more fast-paced than the first season and is making incredible advancements in the plot, and apparently the season ends on a cliffhanger. But then this news just happened. Apparently I'm hearing it's because it's too expensive to make, despite the massive fanbase it has. I'm sad, but also livid, because Sense8 is one of my happy places and I need this story to continue. Just one more season, or at another special episode to wrap things up proper.

You can go directly to this link or some other methods of contacting Netflix and request for either show to be renewed, along with signing these petitions. It won't guarantee anything, but it'll at least help them see how many people are watching and demanding for these shows to return for another season. Even if you don't watch either of these shows, a little help goes a long way.

It's honestly disappointing when some of the most diverse shows with the most compelling and quality storytelling end up getting cancelled, on Netflix no less. You'd think they'd be given more of a chance and more promotion than regular television networks. :/

I'm pissed that they announced it on the first day of Pride Month! They have to know about it, since S1 aired on Pride Month on purpose. I wondered why they had aired S2 a month earlier, without minding much, but seeing this announcement today is very annoying.

They've also cancelled Marco Polo which, apart from Marco himself, had an entirely Asian cast. They don't seem to care much about diversity.

Seriously, that angered me as well. It might've just been a coincidence, but honestly considering how fundamentally important the show has been in regards to the LGBTQ community, it's incredibly insensitive and a huge slap in the face, tbh.

It apparently seems that way, especially since they renewed Racist Iron Fist (which was poorly received) and 13 Reasons Why (a show that features no diversity and romanticizes revenge suicide). I know that those shows probably have less of a budget to work with, but perhaps Netflix could've spent more time promoting Sense8, The Get Down and Marco Polo so they would have more of a chance. Idk. It just doesn't sit right with me, is all.

A bunch of people on my flist watched 13 Reasons Why (I for one have no idea why people are interested in that concept), while hardly anybody talked about Sense8 S2 (it didn't help that May is a busier time of the year than June). Maybe Netflix, just like Marvel, has concluded that diversity doesn't sell...

I guess 13RW got more attention because of the controversy surrounding it. More people were voicing concerns and ranting about the show and its messages and content, which caused more people to watch it out of curiosity, which led to it being considered the "most watched/talked about Netflix show" of 2017 so far, with the cast appearing on shows like Ellen further promoting it and talking about those ~issues. I guess that sealed the deal of it being renewed. It just rubs me the wrong way.

It just makes me so sad and angry. I thought that Sense8 was doing well, it had a massive fanbase and was brilliantly talked about whenever I saw it being praised. If it's a budget issue then it should be dealt with in another way instead of outright cancelling it, especially since the second season ended on a cliffhanger. Just, ugh.

Send those links so people can protest this properly, contacting Netflix directly can maybe help the cause in getting our voices heard that we're not at all happy by this decision.

(Also, if you're willing, definitely give the show another chance. Binging does help in this case. The first season does start off a bit slow in the beginning, but picks up during the last few episodes. The Christmas special and season two are so worth it because they move along rather quickly, the second season in particular because they've been getting shit done right and left and it's glorious, which makes the cancellation even more frustrating because they were getting right down to the juiciest stuff, and ended on a goddamn cliffhanger.)

They say it takes 4-5 episodes to get into it and it's a lot... Unfortunately my brain shuts off if I don't find it interesting and I have so many things I want to watch/try... Maybe... One day... :(

There are a lot of shows out there that takes time to find its rhythm, sometimes waiting half a season before things start picking up. It can definitely be a make or break it for some people, though, which I completely understand. It's why I kinda prefer binge-watching these days more than just waiting weeks and a dozen of hiatuses just for another episode, especially when there's so many shows for me to catch up on.

I'm hoping you'll give it another shot one day, just keep an open mind. If nothing else, I'd say start with the Christmas special and continue into the second season, because those move rather quickly with the characters and the plot.

It has a large supportive fanbase and has been positively received by critics. So I don't understand this decision, which can't possibly be only because of how expensive it was to produce. To my knowledge, Netflix has the luxury of not being like network television with tight deadline schedules and competitions. I mean, Jessica Jones premiered in 2015 and yet its second season is meant to premiere in 2018. If there are budgetary issues there can be other ways of working it out that isn't cancelling the show that has had a positive reception and massive support.

Unfortunately, I don't know. I haven't seen any other statement aside from the official announcement earlier today which gives no further information. There's been claims that Sense8 (along with The Get Down) cost a lot of money per episode, but even if that were the case I'm sure that there could've/should've been negotiations concerning their budgets and not automatically resort to cancellation. IDK. :/

It does suck majorly. Anytime a show gets cancelled when it is just beginning, especially when it's getting to the climax of its plot, is always heartbreaking. :(

Although, I have to say I'm impressed with the fandom. People have been responding faster to this news by having petitions which have been reaching its goal within a matter of hours. Not entirely sure what will come out of it if anything on their end, but it's kind of amazing seeing the universal outrage and people wanting to do something about it, whether it's signing petitions or contacting Netflix directly.

Same here. I mean, if Timeless could get uncancelled rather quickly, who's to say any other show cannot get that same treatment regardless where it originates? Of course, what needs to be addressed is why it was cancelled in the first place and figure out a way around that if possible.

They apparently canceled Marco Polo as well, which is a first for Netflix in canceling any of their original content. I know that they're hoping to be a contender of HBO, but HBO is also flagshipped by shows like GoT that I don't think Netflix has is or is even cultivating at this point.

Though I think a lot of this comes down to is money, and how expensive these shows are to produce per episode. This isn't the first time that shows have been cancelled due to how expensive they are. Though if that is the case, then why weren't there negotiations being made for budget cuts early on? Granted I'm not an expert on these matters so it might've been more complicated than just that. But honestly, it's just incredibly disappointing that some of their best programming has been cancelled, and I'll be honest it's NAGL that these shows were their most racially diverse and LGBTQ friendly ones. SMH.

That's my best guess as well? I can't fault them for making a choice based on the financial aspect, but I'm curious as to what the viewer/cost ratio was for the show. I would've expected Netflix to start with the low hanging fruit first, ie shows that failed with critics/viewers, instead of chasing after their more costly, but well received shows.

Yeah, like Iron Fist which was poorly received and as panned by critics when the series premiered. And yet somehow it was renewed for a second season despite that. Granted it is tied with its Marvel lineup, but honestly they could've just left all of that with The Defenders and not even bother with a S2. It doesn't deserve a S2 unless they can massively improve it (and by improve I mean reboot it entirely by recasting the main lead mean and petty I know, but still).

Otherwise though, I'm not entirely certain what caused the decision. I'm not that well educated on how Netflix works and the deciding factors of these contracts or what-have-you. I'm constantly checking the Sense8 tag on Tumblr and, aside from the impressively massive support from the fandom and getting the word out about the petition and contacting Netflix, it seems like there might've been more to this than we know? I've been hearing conflicting reports, so I'll keep an eye out on that.

It's honestly so baffling to me. I was concerned when The Get Down got cancelled because there was rumor going around that Sense8 was to be targeted next, but I honestly didn't anticipate that it would actually happen. D:

I'm hoping that with all the noise the fandom is making that Netflix will at least reconsider, because that petition has been on fire since it was created literally hours ago and people have been contacting Netflix directly from the site in protest. Again, this doesn't guarantee anything, but I'm hoping that people will see that fans are upset and we need something of a closure for the show somehow.

If not a third season then another special, a movie, etc.

I'm still making my way through the second season (though I'm hesitant to finish because now I'm like, but what if this truly is the end? I'm not ready for that reality just yet.....) but it truly is marvelous. They really upped the ante in the second season, with everyone together and being the amazing clusterfamily that they are. I just love them all and I'm not ready to say goodbye.

The thing is, I'm sadly used to shows I love getting unjustly cancelled prematurely. But with Netflix I always thought it was different and a safe bet for many of their shows, because it wasn't like network television and would allow creators to tell their stories. But I guess I was just naive. It's just like any other business and they make stupid decisions for inane reasons. :(

Someone called them the new FOX because of this. The thing is that I think most of us believed that many shows would be safe because Netflix is still relatively new and doesn't follow the same "rules" as network television. It allowed creators to tell their stories in an unconventional way unlike traditional media, and I've always thought that was wonderful. But now that they're thinking about "taking risks" by cancelling shows, it has led to more fear and outrage from most who thought Netflix was a saving grace. And if this is about financial issues, there needs to be a negotiation and/or compromise before any decision is made.

But, admittedly I'm not that knowledgeable about these sorts of things. It might be even more complicated than we realize. But nevertheless, this news hit everyone hard and people are retaliating by making our voices heard that we're displeased by this decision. The Get Down wasn't appealing to me, but I really enjoyed Sense8's first season & have a couple eps of the new season waiting on my tablet. While I don't love Sense8 as much as a lot of my flist, it's definitely a quality show and deserves better than ending on a cliffhanger.

It absolutely deserves a proper ending, especially with this kind of a story and the direction it's heading.

In my opinion, shows shouldn't end seasons on cliffhangers for this exact reason. I understand enticing the audience to stay tuned for the story to continue into the next season, but what if that never happens? You're left with the story and everything incomplete, with tons of frustrated fans. Sense8 was moving the story along in the second season, but to leave it hanging like that, just when everything was hitting its stride? That's brutally unfair.

I feel like the least Netflix can do, if they're not going to renew it for a third season, is give us another special to wrap things up right. We, and the show, deserve that much.
