R.I.P. Vine.

As some have probably already heard yesterday, Vine has been discontinued.

I know most people on my flist have neither used or cared about Vine, but the amount of innovation that people had when creating their sketches on there was incredible. I never used or had an account there but I have seen numerous of Vines posted (mostly on Tumblr) and I'm pretty sure some of you have probably seen a handful as well over the last several years, and a lot of them were absolutely hilarious and rather ingenious. Unfortunately, judging from the amount of negativity and mocking I've seen around from those unfamiliar with the format, I don't think many understood the amount of artistry it took to create a genuinely good Vine. It took a lot of creativity and thorough planning out of the sketch, how it was going to look, how to edit it perfectly for the comedic timing, and all for six seconds of content. You could literally create an entire completed storyline in just those six seconds. Other times certain Vines were pure accidental but created a legacy of their own, even creating its own memes in the process. It was clever, and it was such a pop culture phenomenon so much that it appeared on shows like Parks and Recreation, and now it is gone.

We've always known that anything online isn't always permanent, especially with the countless social medias available and in competition with each other some will have shorter lifespans than others, and because of that I'm sure there will most likely be something else that will act as a replacement in due time. But I was introduced to so many hilarious sketches and people there, so many wonderfully talented individuals who then got contracts and careers based off the things they created from that little app. From Thomas Sanders and Lele Pons to Enya Umanzor and thejasminator, along with dozens of others, they made me laugh with their creative content.

One of my favorite YouTubers, Gabbie Hanna, who started off on Vine, made a video on her vlog channel discussing what the app personally meant to her and the importance of these little communities of such platforms, even if other people don't understand it.

I know this seems ridiculous to post about a discontinued social media app that I never used and that most probably didn't really pay attention to before this announcement, but aside from the hilarious sketches that I would come across every now and then that will no longer be in creation, I'm also appreciative and supportive of content creators who are genuinely passionate and love what they do and want to further themselves into this career that they've made for themselves because of such online platforms. While there are many other places they can migrate to continue their creativity, for some of them this was their starting point.

Oh man, I heard about this. I never used vine, but I've seen them via tumblr and fb and there are some really good ones. I swear that some of the people behind them are future film makers.

There were definitely some incredibly talented people from there, and what's fascinating is how some of them learned how to do all of the editing and timing of the ideas they planned out from Vine. It was a great starting point for many young creative minds who want to further themselves into such a career, and I hope they continue to do so even with the app gone.

I've only ever seen a few Vines that became super popular and wound up everywhere. While it wasn't really my social media of choice it's odd to see one disappear altogether.

From what I gather, it's still going to be there as an archive for already existing videos (for how long though, nobody knows) but uploading newer content is no longer supported. But yeah, it's super bizarre. I know there were jokes about Vine having fizzled out a while ago when Snapchat came along, but I always figured that it would still be around for those still using it.

Hopefully the users have all backed up their own content too because you're right, there's no mention of how long it'll stay up. Just that it's staying up for now.

I'm not entirely certain of how it all worked, but I think the way they operated was similar in terms of YouTube, such as brands paid popular Viners thus getting them sponsored which is how people could make money from using the site, but unfortunately I don't think the site itself made enough money to continue, at least that is what has been claimed.

But I'm in agreement with others, I think Vine could've (and should've) been spared.

I know there was a tutorial someone posted somewhere about how to save their Vines, or any other Vines for that matter. I know people on Tumblr have been doing their own "my favorite Vines" compilations so nothing is lost.

Yes! That is one of my favorites. It is shot so beautifully, almost like a professional ad or a snippet from a telenovela. It is timed and done perfectly.

I'm so sad about it going down, even though I get some of the logic behind it. Like with most Viners ending up on other forms of media since there's only so much you can do with 6 seconds of content. But as an editor, I'll sorely miss it. I have a youtube but.. sometimes you can't make full video edits and you just need those short ones. And I'm failing to find the effort in making an instagram just for vine edits. I'll really miss the community and all of the fun that came from it.

Yeah, the editing aspect is what a lot of people appreciated about the site. For those who had no clue how to edit or have access to any kind of editing software, Vine made it easier to learn. It was such a great tool both in that and seeing the kinds of things you can create with its restrictive nature. Plus, as you said, the community of people who connected with each other, collaborated with one another, etc. And as I mentioned that there will no doubt be replacements and known people can find other outlets doing similar things (YouTube being the next big thing, as some have already started doing even before this announcement), Vine will be missed.

If there's one thing all this social media is good for, it's shaping new platforms for creative expression, and it's always sad to see people lose one.

I completely agree. I know there are a lot of people out there who don't care and/or view social media as some frivolous activity, but even if you don't understand the need for social media considering there are a variety of options for that creative expression and I think that is a good thing. I mean, think about it. Vine was unique because it forced people to find ways of fitting their ideas into six seconds. That is damn impressive, imho.

For real, though. While the app will still be up as an archive of existing videos (for the time being), just the notion that there will be no more new creative content makes me rather sad. :(

There's been a lot of people reblogging their favorite vines over the last couple of days, which I appreciate since it gives me a chance to relive some of my own personal favorites along with seeing some newer ones. The downside though is due to them being constantly on my dash at the moment it slows everything down.

On one hand it's understandable that the reason they're discontinuing it is because it wasn't making enough revenue (and let's face it, the nature of the business itself is about numbers and competition), but still, the site itself was a bit of innovative genius. There were people who started out there who learned how to edit and put together some fantastic pieces, and would later transfer over to other editing projects. To see it go is devastating.

There are a lot of Vine compilations on YouTube that I do watch from time to time, which is great, but it's still rather sad that nobody can upload anything new to Vine anymore thus no more new content.
