Supergirl: Pilot Episode Review

Supergirl 1.01 "Pilot"

This pilot was everything I wanted it to be. It was fast-paced, action-packed, it got to the point immediately on who Kara Danvers is and her backstory within the first ten minutes before quickly transitioning to her spontaneous choice and transformation to becoming Supergirl. We also got a chance to be introduced to a number of other characters who will become a huge influential part of her story, including James Olsen (already with the adorable flirting and I love it) and her relationship with her sister, and the bigger plot threats which include familial ties, which should be interesting.

Kara Danvers is simply adorable. Her enthusiasm and excitement over doing something to help others is absolutely endearing, and just everything about her personality is too cute. Usually with a lot of superheroes there is a lot of baggage they carry, which I'm sure there will be some emotional points with her story as it continues, but I love that she's basically upbeat and has this positive energy about herself. It's very different from the other DC superhero stories we've seen lately, since they're usually darker in tone and atmosphere and characters. Seeing a more lighthearted story among this universe is refreshing to see.

While there were a couple of moments that were slightly heavy-handed in their message (as in I would have preferred it handled a bit differently) and I wasn't too fond of at least one character (that co-worker dude), I overall really enjoyed this pilot. It completely sold me on what the show is about, and I'm all in. Plus, this being a pilot, we're going to be seeing a lot of improvements and growth along the way and I'm excited to see where the rest of the season takes us.

And more of Kara and James, please. They are too cute I'm already waving the OTP flag. ♥ ♥ ♥

I was already all on board the Kara/James shipping train based on the trailers alone and then the episode sealed the deal for me :D
Especially since that other potential love interest seems to be a total flop. I'm glad that my flist seems to agree on him ^^

I liked the pilot a lot,too. I love me some angsty shows like Arrow but it's also great to have it balanced with something more lighthearted like The Flash or now Supergirl!

I remember being so giddy about them in the trailer, and seeing that whole scene of their first meeting play out left me so happy. Because she's just all "asdfj;alskdj;lfk ♥~ (◠‿◠✿) ~ ♥" and it was such a cute flustered reaction (I would've done the same thing, girl, if a handsome man like that appeared at my workplace). I was smiling every time they interacted, and I just want so much more, and from the looks of it we'll be getting more.

I just don't want that bland dudebro coworker to even be a potential love interest in any way, shape or form. From what I've observed most seem to be pretty annoyed with his behavior in the pilot and not pleased with him overall, so that's good at least.

I loved Kara so much!! But that co-worker dude is on my shit list after he was like, "Oh you must be gay, that's why you're not into me." When she let him become part of her "team" I was like NO DON'T HANG OUT WITH HIM. Ew.

SAME. I hated that bit in the trailer, and I still hated it in the episode. Even more with the "oh you look beautiful without your glasses" outdated bullshit line. I know this is just the pilot and there is room for improvement of his character, but so far I am no impressed by him. Less of him and more of James, please.

She's just too cute! She was basically over the moon about being about to fly again after all this time, and saving people. You don't often get that with superhero stories since a lot of times there's some level of angst happening. Kara is basically one adorable ball of enthusiasm and optimism and I am loving it.

I saw the overview of the season preview where the coworker guy kisses Kara on the cheek and she has this amazing "WTF IS HAPPENING DNW" face. However, the preview also focuses on Kara and James being adorable together so I definitely think the show is pushing for them (because yay!), while coworker dude is mostly just left with his unrequited feelings. Regardless though, unless they give him much needed improvement he's not a character I like much. He gives off this dudebro vibe so much, just from his comments alone in the pilot made me cringe so hard.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and is now in my Sky box repeat record to watch.Whilst i do like the darker stiff this and The Flash are just more frothy and light.

It's wonderful to have a nice balance in things, some shows are dark while others are lighter in their tones. It has something for everyone and I like that.

The pilot was everything I wanted it to be, too. I had pretty high expectations after seeing half my f-list mentioning how much they loved it, and I still wasn't disappointed. I'm really excited for the rest of the season now, because based on the first episode this could definitely become one of my favorite shows :)

Yeah, aside from a few weak spots it honestly was a strong pilot. I hope it continues to grow stronger as the season progresses, because we have major potential with this show and I do want it to succeed, if nothing else just for more adorableness of Kara along with her and James. ♥

I'm liking that they're definitely setting up for them to be the main couple, or that we're going to have a kind of slow build to them getting together. At least, I'm hoping so, because they are too cute just from their first interaction. ♥

I basically agre 100% with your entire post. I love how cute Kara and James are and how adorable Kara is and just how the pilot wraped up her backstory. It just works and yes- I agree- it's great to see a more lighthearted story in the universe. If it stays that way, of course. And you're also true on this being the pilot so improvements will probably be made along the way. I'm so glad this pilot didn't dissapoint.

I really liked how they didn't waste any time on her backstory, like with other superhero origins there are at least some secrets or other things, but here it was pretty straightforward with explaining who she is, why she went to Earth, and how the ended up where she is now. I'm sure we'll be getting more of what is up with her aunt and whatnot, but it's very simply with Kara herself and why she wants to help people, which is absolutely adorable and what I want to see.

It's always a 50/50 chance with pilots, since some aren't that great but the show improves as it goes along, while others start off strong but unfortunately end up declining after that. I'm hoping that it continues getting better and better as the season progresses.
