++ First, welcome [livejournal.com profile] sometimesartist, [livejournal.com profile] tellshannon815, [livejournal.com profile] thegrlwhowaited, [livejournal.com profile] ginevra17, and [livejournal.com profile] muneca_brava from this friending meme. Hope your time here won't be too disappointing. ;)

++ We finally get some stills from Game of Thrones S4. Nothing plot related is revealed, it's mostly just character shots, so there's no spoilers. We get the first introduction of the Martells, and seeing Oberyn and Ellaria standing side-by-side looking fierce makes me so excited in seeing them on the screen. The casting is just perfect, especially Indira Varma; that casting was a dream come true for many people, so I can't wait. And the new Daario is definitely an upgrade from the previous, I'm interested to see how he does in the role.

However this production behind the scenes video most definitely has spoilers. I will only say this: there are scenes that I'm excited for, a certain scene that I think we see here that I am absolutely not emotionally prepared for in any way, shape or form, and that new dress Dany is sporting, just, dayum gurl.

I've mentioned my concerns on how Dany's storyline might be handled, and as we draw closer to the fourth season my worries have returned tenfold.

The show isn't the books, we know this, but it still disappoints me how they've minimized quite a bit of the importance of her arc. Now we're getting into her time in Meereen, which is where everything gets rather complicated and falls apart for her, and I'm not quite sure if the show is able to handle all of that in a respectable and coherent manner. I mean, this is where she makes mistakes and questionable decisions, where she struggles internally and questions herself, where her ability of ruling is challenged greatly by those around her, and where she suffers the consequences of her actions. This is important for her character growth and development, and I fear the show is going to overlook much of that in favor of the "badass dragon queen" reputation that has befallen on the show version of the character. I mean, I get it, she's a fan favorite and all, but there's just so much more to her character than just that, you know? She's complex, just like every other character in this series, and should be treated as such.

I just keep thinking, had they kept in the actual House of the Undying scene with the prophecies and visions (among many other things they managed to fuck up), it wouldn't necessarily have been a problem coming into this season since she invests herself in these prophecies and warnings she got from there. It's something she constantly ponders esp in her time in Meereen when she starts questioning herself and the path she has chosen and whether she is doing the right thing. But even with the show not having that present, they could have still done something similar to add more depth to her arc instead of oversimplifying and downplaying many things, you know?

I don't know, this is my dilemma. I watch and like the show, obviously, and I've accepted that they deviate from the source for various reasons (time, budget, etc.) It's just, I want them to do it right, but given their track record on certain decisions they've made I'm nervous on what will happen. Same goes for everything else, actually.

Looks like my inner dragon has been awakened, lol.

Excited too. And also nervous about how they'll handle Dany's storyline. I was generally happy with season 3 in that regard, but I feel like by leaving out important book 2 stuff they've set themselves up for failure.

Those pictures are gorgeous. Although, personally I'm going to miss the old Daario. I know he looked nothing like the book version, but I didn't care because he was just so pretty. What can I say. Sometimes I'm shallow.

Yeah, and I think even GRRM commented on how the show shot themselves in the foot in that regard.

Well, neither of them look like the book version, lol. I just wasn't feeling the first actor. Something about him was unappealing to me. I know the character is supposed to be an arrogant sleezeball, but there was something off about him. His look (that wig was so awful), the way he acted, his lack of chemistry with Emilia, idk. I'm hoping this new actor does better.

Thanks! :D

I'm very excited for season 4! Season 3 was good enough, imo, so I hope they'll be able to keep up the good work. There are a lot of scenes that I really can't wait to see in the new season, hopefully they'll do them properly!

Just seeing some of the BTS footage and knowing what's to come has me really excited, and I'm crossing my fingers they do them justice. Also, I can't wait to see the reactions from the unaware people watching the show on what's in store. ;)

idk how they'll be handing her storyline. They seem to be speeding through it while glossing some things over, so I guess that we'll just have to wait and see how it turns out.

Yeah, by oversimplifying events and things from her storyline, it's really gonna be tricky. If nothing else, I just really want them to focus on her internal struggle on the decisions she has to be making. I feel like if they do that part justice, by showing that she is making bad choices and suffering the consequences of those mistakes, then it can somewhat redeem what has been done to her storyline.

Hi new friend! :)

Apparently I missed some news, why is there a new actor for Daario? Not that I was that invested in the first one, still disappointed in the lack of ridiculous colours.

I'm worried about Dany too. At first I thought they were going to be more ambigious about her than the book pov is - I think while it's easy for the reader to condemn some of the things she does, it gets tempered because we're in her head all the time and she feels justified in her actions. But last season seemed to go all the way in making her a hero, to the point where I'm pretty sure that terrible last scene was unironic??
I also agree that the House of the Undying should have has more of the prophecies etc, because they're so important.

I don't think an exact reasoning was given on why the sudden change in actors.

But last season seemed to go all the way in making her a hero, to the point where I'm pretty sure that terrible last scene was unironic??

Yeah, and I feel like the show has been oversimplifying the more complicated aspects of her character and only highlighting her badass moments without paying attention to the other stuff that is just as important. She deals with many things and there's so much in her POV chapters to back this up, and yet they only seem to focus and glorify one aspect of her, because that's apparently what the television audiences seem to want (which is another issue altogether).

I mean, I understand that as an hour of television and a short amount of time each season it can be hard to fit everything and hope it makes sense. But it does feel like it's been very sloppy and lazy to not explore further into the inner workings of her character, her worries and thoughts and things she actually has concerns about within the book. I know some of it is attributed to the visions and prophecies told to her and things she's been warned about by others around her, which they never had on the show, but I figure they could still work that in because she is still a young girl and is very naive and will question herself, because shit has been complicated and will continue to get complicated and really messy.

I love Dany, I love her arc as presented in the books (Meereen being a frustrating but interesting and necessary part of her character journey), and I just really, really want them to pull it off. It's not like they're incapable of doing something like this, it's just they haven't done a good job with presenting her storyline as it should have been.

Awesome! Looking forward to getting to know her. :)

I first got into the show before getting invested in the books, but even before that I looked things up online because I wanted to know more about what happens and where the characters currently ended up. I don't care about spoilers about this series, obviously.

But anyway, I can't wait to see your reactions for what's to come. If they keep true to some events, you're in for quite a ride. ;)

Hi. Thanks for the Welcome.

Whenever they make books into movies or tv shows, it's never like the books. They end up changing a lot.

Hello! :D

Indeed, and I always keep that in mind. Sometimes changes aren't always so bad, and actually can be a good thing to enhance the story. Though other times, certain changes can make no sense and can make you go, "wha huh?" at the decisions they made.

Sadly Games of Thrones is subject where I can contribute nothing of value to the conversation.
