After recent events, it seems that many affiliated filesharing sites are deleting their files to avoid legal troubles.

Mostly out of fear due to the action the federal government took upon Megaupload, seeing as how the people behind MU are now reportedly being indicted. Understandably, this is causing much concern for everyone everywhere, since it's all happening so fast within the last few days. It's been extremely overwhelming, and it seems like this is the digital age apocalypse, soon we will have to be dealing with dirty guerrilla tactics just to listen to a song for free. While I shouldn't say don't worry or take precautions because obviously this is very serious (and incredibly scary) business that is happening on a legal scale, all is not lost. As long as the Internet remains filesharing will always be available in some form or another. We just have to wait until everyone regroups and finds other, more stealthier ways of working around the system.

This is also why we must fight the recent string of bills coming out as of lately. While SOPA/PIPA have not been passed and are delayed (for now), that doesn't mean we shouldn't be made aware of other threats. ACTA is the latest one, which is considered to be bigger and more dangerous than SOPA/PIPA on an international scale.

Will be keeping an eye on these things, signing petitions, making our voices heard. Because this is all seriously very disconcerting and fucked up and unfair on so many levels.

Oh 2012, why are you sucking already? :/

What I'm wondering is why everyone's cracking down on copyright all of the sudden? It's like the whole piracy thing JUST STARTED or something.

I honestly have no idea. I mean, the FBI apparently had been cracking down on MU for quite a while, I think over a year, and they could have done this at any time. But it's like some kind of scare tactic, and now every single filesharing site in existence is under fire. Most are deleting files and shutting down, others being investigated by the government. All within a span of a week.

It's terrifying, but it also makes me and many others very determined to not give up without a fight.

I don't understand why governments are focusing on this, when there are WAY more important matters in the world. It's like... wtf? So okay, we're not making the super rich people richer... but hey, why don't you go try to fix all those people dying of hunger, or global economy or... MEH. The priorities suck.

As V said, in V for Vendetta... "People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people."

I know right? It's like their train of thought was:

"Hmmmm, what should we concern ourselves with? The ongoing recession crisis and unemployment? Hate crimes? Poverty? Homelessness? OH I KNOW LET US CRACK DOWN ON THE HARMLESS ONLINE DOWNLOADS THAT OCCURS BECAUSE WE CAN'T HAVE THE POOR RICH PEOPLE AND THEIR BIG FAT CORPORATIONS GET LESS MONEY!"

I mean honestly, it makes no sense. Plus the way they've been handling it is just ridiculous, because it seems they have no idea how the Internet works or even how downloading can benefit from everyone. It's not a simple black and white issue here as they're making it out to be.

I hope the government understands that by taking away our primary sources of downloading material, they are inadvertently creating a massive group of hackers. We will become revolutionaries.
