Emily Browning defends Sucker Punch from the harsh "sexism" criticism.

But Browning, 22, is adamant she doesn't agree with accusations the film objectifies women, telling Britain's BBC, "I find the idea that it's sexist really bizarre. The sexism is within the story of the film. Within the brothel, the girls are being objectified but that doesn't mean the film is doing the same. It's really about these girls breaking free."

Girlfriend speaks the truth, and it's kind of sad that it needs to be said because it's sort of obvious that while it's present in the story the film never, ever advocates sexism against women. That's like accusing Harry Potter of teaching witchcraft to kids and completely missing the point of what the story is actually about. But I'm glad that Emily Browning has her head on her shoulders and doesn't really mind that there's criticism. It's being talked about, whether positive or negative, it's getting a reaction from people. Thankfully, I'm seeing more positivity from others now that they've actually seen the film instead of relying on critic reviews or pre-judging based on trailers or other people's opinions.

This isn't the first time Emily Browning is very adamant about her opinions. She also recently exclaimed her outrage over the MPAA forcing Zack Snyder to cut a particular scene which would show her character being comfortable and in control over her sexuality. They deemed it unacceptable and she called them out on such idiocy, and I love her even more for it.

I just love Emily Browning the more I see her interviews, okay? ♥

She's about two years younger than me! It's so bizarre! Then again, I have to remind myself that Lady Gaga is the exact age as I am. lol @ my sad little life. ;p

Emily is becoming one of my favorite actresses right now, because she not only seems to legitimately enjoy what she does but she's not afraid of giving her opinions, and she also seems to be perfectly grounded with her head on her shoulders. Not to mention adorable. ♥

She was also in The Uninvited (the American remake of the Korean horror A Tale Of Two Sisters), but you're right aside from that and ASOUE I haven't seen her in anything else. Nonetheless, after this film I think she has a solid career ahead of her because I think she's extremely talented and intelligent.

I haven't watched that 'cause I can't stand horror films. (and.. I kinda watched half of the original and got creeped out so badly D:) Well, she's very young and I'm sure will have way more roles ahead of her!

Hehe, I love the original because it's not your standard horror movie. It's pretty sad, actually, but very effective with the creepiness in several scenes. Then again, I love horror films so this isn't news for me to say this. ^_^

It's not technically "gloomy", just more bittersweet hidden underneath a lot of action-fantasy. But yeah, definitely check it out whenever you can because it really is kickass and amazing. Emily does a fantastic job in the role, the entire cast meshes really well in fact, and I'm happy that Emily loves the movie as much as she does to speak out on things like this.

I just recently overdosed on really dark fantasy novels and not so happy TV shows and movies, so I think it will be a while before I see Sucker Punch. I want to punch the MPAA for thinking that women should act a certain way, especially women who are in situations where their power of choice is taken from them. Her having sex with someone of her own choosing, that she wants tp be with is important and fuck the MPAA for excluding that.
Arrgh, I am as pissed as Emily about this.

She really is. Judging from a lot of her interviews, she found much confidence and joy making Sucker Punch which got her excited about being in the business again. I feel like she has much pride in what she did in this film, and it clearly shows based on these interviews and how she voices her opinions on them. She legitimately loved working on the film and loves the story being told, and I'm proud of her.

I do think that the film is intensely problematic in ways, but people's opinions are going to differ.

I'm relieved she got back into acting as well, I was wondering where she went to and seeing her in this role made me very happy. I'm also happy that she found the excitement again because of this film, based on what she has been saying in interviews. :)

Idk, I wouldn't want someone to talk about me or my opinions that way, which is why I said that. Especially in this case, where I've seen a lot of very well written, well laid out arguments as to why this movie does have elements of sexism in it.

i just don't like the implication (maybe I'm misinterpreting all this) that you've got to respect other people's opinions in order to be a respectful person who respects other people. i have absolutely NO respect for some opinions, regardless of who espouses them.

I apologize for the wording. I've just seen some really radical viewpoints that I strongly disagree with that it kind of pushes certain buttons with me. But I agree, opinions are opinions and everyone has a right to them.

See, I'm definitely pro-woman and against sexism of any kind and will call out on it for sure, but with Sucker Punch...I didn't see anything like that. Sure, there is sexism within the story itself but that's what drives our protagonists to do something and fight for their freedom. But some of the complaints and arguments made toward the film, I'm rather puzzled by.

Perhaps these people were expecting something else entirely than what they thought. I don't know. It's about personal perception on the film, but at the end of the day it's just an epic fantasy-adventure that I thoroughly enjoyed and loved.

Exactly. I think some people aren't realizing that the entire point of the film was that these girls were fighting against their male oppressors and escaping the situation they are in. So the sexism was there, but not in the way that these naysayers are seeing it. Which makes me scratch my head in confusion because isn't that kind of obvious from the start? I just don't get where these arguments are stemming from because I do see the sexism, but it's within the story and that's the entire point of their journey.
