Pretty Little Liars 1.17 "The New Normal"

This episode was a lot more shippy than I expected it to be, but mostly in a good way.

First let me just say that I'm super happy that Aria and Hanna made up, I was beginning to worry because the girl's friendship is what is holding them together with everything they're all going through with the A business. Out of all the girls, Hanna has really been having it rough with doing the demands A has been sending her, definitely trying to keep things under wraps with her mother's money situation while maintaining her cool, but most of this is personal and illegal. One wrong move and she'll be torn apart from her mom. Aria's feeling of betrayal is understandable, but to hold a grudge for long isn't possible knowing what they're facing with these threatening messages. So yeah, staying BFFs and I love it.

So. Hanna and Caleb. I totally ship them, yes.

I know they said that he's definitely mysterious, however I am really loving their interactive scenes and I like how there's this chemistry between them. I also thought it was sweet for Hanna to allow him to stay at her home, even if it's the basement, but still. There's something about them that I can't wait to see more of, whether it develops further (which I hope) and what the reactions would be. But I am loving them so far. I know that they have said that Toby has more mystery in him, and perhaps something might come up which may be another clue into this entire mystery game that is A or whatever, but so far I see no particular threat than just some guy in an unfortunate situation trying the best he can to get an out.

Also, doesn't Caleb resemble Tim Riggins from Friday Night Lights? I'm just saying....

Another blooming pairing that's been happening is Spencer and Toby, which I never thought would ever happen in a million years.

I like that Spencer is really rethinking Toby in a different light after finding out she, too, had been framed, and while she is definitely wanting to get on his good side so she can piece together the mysterious puzzle she's also understanding on another level what it feels like to be accused of something that you didn't do. She identifies with him in a way even she didn't realize she would. I liked the entire studying session and also the note inside of the French book, Toby definitely wants to help. Of course there's the Jenna issue which that, in itself, is rather creepy. But I honestly think that Spencer makes Toby stronger, more confident, in a way that Emily never did when they were befriending each other. Which makes sense because Spencer was the only one of the girls who could make confrontation and stand up to Alison, and although they are highly suspicious of Jenna I don't think she's afraid of confronting her either. Which puts more courage into Toby because with her there he can stand up to her, like in this scene:

He takes her hand and says that he's going with Spencer, without hesitation, right in front of Jenna. Toby would have never done that before, not even if Emily had been there instead of Spencer. I think Spencer brings out that kind of courage inside of Toby, and I think Spencer sees that and finds herself understanding him more. I do hope it continues between them, a friendship slowly blooming into something else.

Though I'm not entirely sure which I'm more worried about, what Jenna is gonna do to Spencer or what is happening inside her own house between her sister Melissa and Ian with the unconvincing marriage/parenthood thing going on that is majorly freaking her out. And making everyone suspicious. D: D: D:

Now, onto the Emily and Paige situation. Personally, I don't like it.

Granted Paige was introduced as a major bitch and in this episode we understand that that's not all who she is, since it was instilled into her by her parents, particularly her father, into being the best that she can be and doing whatever to achieve that goal hence her severe competitive streak which she obviously doesn't want to do anymore. However, I find it entirely unconvincing in what they were trying to accomplish with that final scene between her and Emily. Paige might be in the closet, she might not have a tight-net of friends like Emily has to reveal it to and have it be okay, and perhaps she might have had a secret thing for Emily....but having them being together? I just don't see it. That kiss in the car was so fucking awkward, and it was just Emily's stunned face that really proved how uncomfortable the entire thing was. Paige might be wanting some self-discovery, but I think it would be entirely cliche if they actually had them being together. Sorry, not buying it and don't want it to happen. It's not that I'm still wanting Emily/Maya to be together, obviously after everything I think that Maya probably isn't returning and that Emily does need to move on, but not like this. Not with this girl.

That car scene sort of reminded me of that fiasco that happened on Glee between Kurt and that WhatsHisFace bully. Do not want. D:

However, I do give props for Emily's mom in this episode. She finally understood that despite not understanding on the level that she can, Emily is still her daughter and no matter what that will never, ever change. To have someone threaten and take personal action against her is just outrageous and infuriating, and I was so happy to see her stand up against Paige's father like that and her apologizing to Emily. That was sweet, and I'm glad she finally had the realization and the balls to do so. NOW JUST APOLOGIZE FOR SENDING MAYA AWAY, DAMMIT.

Aria and Ezra, still not wholly into their relationship either (I don't think I ever will be, tbh), however this scene was hilarious:

THAT AWKWARD MOMENT WHEN YOU ARE MAKING OUT WITH YOUR TEACHER WHEN YOUR FATHER CALLS AND LEAVES A MESSAGE! LOLOLOLOL FOREVER!

The entire miscommunication and confusion between Aria's mother and father is amusing, I'll be honest. Aria is worried about getting caught, Ezra is worried about getting caught while trying to maintain his cool while he is being interrogated by Aria's father who is silently accusing him of taking out his wife to a book signing of an author she didn't initially like, therefore causing much confusion. And before that, Aria was still worried about being found out only to discover that her parents had been sneaking around having an affair with each other without getting caught......it's just such an amusing circle of close-calls and miscommunications. Quite frankly, I don't really care much about the Aria/Ezra relationship but I am glad that they are making it somewhat interesting by adding in all of this amusement, lol.

Did you know that you can get a personalized PLL bracelet as seen from the show? That is so awesome. I totally want one, just because. ^_^
