I've heard that a movie has to make at least twice it's initial budget (to cover filming and marketing) to be considered successful and Serenity only made $38.8 million worldwide with a budget on 39 million. I'm sure it's higher with DVD sale, but probably not high enough.
'I would love there to be a Big Damn Sequel, sometime in the future. But as I said it was a miracle that the movie was ever even considered at all, so we should be happy that there was at least some kind of continuation to tell the story. :)'
