Day 26: "OMGWTFBBQ?!"

Battlestar Galactica
2.20 "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part 2"
Battlestar Galactica is known for its shocking finales, the majority of them ending on a cliffhanger, even their mid-season finales. I honestly can say all of them deserve mentioning for different reasons. But I choose the second season finale, "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part 2", for I think my favorite finale because it leaves us with this feeling of utter dread and anticipating for more, to find out what happens next, and most of it just happens right towards the very end.
We have Gaius Baltar elected as President of the Twelve Colonies, but then we skip forward and it's one year later. What other show has done that in possibly the same narrative? From there we see that many things have changed for our characters, situations having made dire even without their enemies pursuing them. Some characters have gotten married, others have gotten fat, there's tension between characters that we don't know the context of before, and so forth. It's like suddenly we jumped right forward and got plopped right in the middle of these people's lives with no idea of what happened in between. But I think the shocking moment happens in the last several minutes, when suddenly the Cylons appear out of nowhere and bombard the planet and make the announcement that they are to occupy the planet along with the humans. Though it's when Gaius stands up and says, "Very well. Oh behalf of the people of the Twelve Colonies....I surrender." That's when all hell breaks loose, that's when you are gaping at the television like, holy shit. Did he really just surrender himself, and everyone else on that planet, at the mercy of the Cylons? WHAT THE FRAKKING FRAK?! O_O
We're left with not knowing what's going to happen to these characters during this occupation for months, and funnily when we skipped a year in this finale we are going to come back in the third season with four skipped months since where we left off. It's like all these gaps that we're skipping over. It really is like, WHAT THE FRAK IS HAPPENING HERE?! And you know what? I like it. It makes us question, to theorize, to want to know more because we care about what is happening to these characters.
So yeah, I think this finale was fantastic not just because of that but for the direction alone, it's one of the best jump-forward moves ever to forward the story. And when you listen to Ron Moore and David Eick talking about the process of doing this, it makes you really appreciate their appreciation for the story itself.
Runner Ups: "Crossroads, Part 2" from Battlestar Galactica because, well duh. Definitely in that what the frak? category because of all these revelations that were given, especially the pull away in the end through the galaxy. Absolutely phenomenal. Oh, and I gotta give a shoutout to the S1 finale of Supernatural, simply because that ending was so shocking it leaves you wondering what is going to happen to these characters, especially had the show not been picked up.

I hope all my lovely Americans had a wonderful Independence Day yesterday. I, for one, didn't really do any celebrating for the 4th of July only because we usually do so with relatives when we're all together. But since we all have different schedules and they're all over the place now, I just spent the majority of the day at home and trying to calm my dog from freaking out over the huge booms of the fireworks.
Oh, and y'all need to see this: "It All Ends Here" ;___;
It's the most beautiful and depressing movie posters I have seen, I absolutely love it. Of course this actually made my chest tighten because I really don't want it to be over, even though I know it's never the end. But at the same time, it is. I can't explain it, okay? Harry Potter has been my life for many years, even if I'm not actively in fandom anymore it still is a part of me. I'm thinking about many a grand HP post at some point, really kind of reliving how I got into the series in the first place, the impact it's made on my life and the fabulous people I have met through it. And it's so funny, because I haven't talked about Harry Potter on my journal for some time, and yet with the final movie coming really close it's really sparked something inside of me to revisit it again.

hp_commonroom is where you can relive the series again. I just joined, but it's great to see so many people being enthusiastic about the books. It's kind of like, I've forgotten how amazing it is. It's almost like going to the midnight release parties all over again!
