Day 11 - A show that disappointed you
Heroes

I'll be brutally honest here, there's been no other show that became such a huge disappointment like Heroes turned out to be. It crashed and burned so hard, so fast, that I'm not even angry, just vastly disappointed.
Anyone that's known me for a long while knows that I was completely enthralled with this show. I really loved it you guys, seriously. Season one is what drew me in, hell it's what drew many people in. It had an interesting concept, a television show that was molded into a live action comic book in a way, which I thought was really cool when it first premiered. I remembered watching the promo videos of Claire jumping off the cliff and then reattaching her limbs, and thought, "wow, this looks to be very interesting!" And yes, the first season was incredible and completely original. Sadly, that was the only season the show had that had any kind of originality and consistency. I liked S2 well enough, despite the writer's strike and some issues here and there, but it wasn't until the beginning of the third season that I just stopped completely. Because it wasn't Heroes anymore. It was like they completely abandoned what they originally sought out the show to be and just completely fucked everything up. Just the random shit they did, continuity errors, character assassinations, the fact they made it "all about Sylar and the Petrellis" without any acknowledgment of other characters, lack of consideration with the show's timeline and consistency which made everything entirely confusing. Just the writing in general pretty much stunk as time went on, and it's clear they were just making shit up as they went along.
Never mind the mistreatment not only their characters but their actors as well, the unexpected firing of a particular actor controversy really places icing on that cake.
Plus there's Kring making promise after promise about "fixing things" that were wrong about the show, and yet never delivering on those promises. In fact the more they tried to clean it up the more fucked up they made it. The show just dug itself deeper into that hole, which led to the inevitable cancellation.
Just, this show had such amazing potential in the beginning. I don't know what happened, whether it was their lack of knowing where they wanted to go with it or the pressures of the NBC network due to it being their top-rated show and they grew big heads because of it, but somewhere in the middle of season two and onward they just were lacking what they originally had before and it's just, sad. Incredibly sad to see a show that had something going for it to just bomb like this so fast. It could have been great, but it had major issues and failed on so many levels. And I have never fallen out of love for a show faster than I have with Heroes, and that's just sad to even say.
Masterlist of days here.
Interestingly there's going to be a new NBC fall show, The Cape, which seems to be a replacement for Heroes in a sense, except it looks to have an actual story and plot. And it'll have Summer Glau involved which, anything with Summer is guaranteed to be something worthwhile so, yay. Let's hope the show is what it appears to be from the trailer.
But what's this I hear about them thinking of rebooting Alias? I didn't watch the show but from my understanding it's only been five years since it ended, isn't that too early to start thinking about a reboot?

Date: 2010-06-02 08:52 am (UTC)I love the friends I met through the fandom, I think it's so great that me and other fans are still fandom friends - you included ♥ - and share the same interests in other non-Heroes fandoms as well.
Yes, this. ♥ Heroes brought people together, but even when that show failed we stayed together through other means of similar interests. It's amazing that I still have people on my flist who I met through the Heroes fandom but we all share other fandoms too. :) :) This is what's so great about fandom in general. <333

Date: 2010-06-01 10:38 pm (UTC)And rebooting Alias? Say huh? "The new series would have some elements of the original that propelled Jennifer Garner to stardom. However, they'd skip the intricate mythology involving the Rambaldi prophecy." So basically, it would just be a hot chick in tight outfits kicking ass. What's interesting about that? Story, people, we need story. But yeah, way too soon for a reboot. If they want a spy show, develop a new one.

Exactly. I haven't watched the show but I know everything needs some kind of story behind it, otherwise there would be no substance. Lacking of mythology or any kind of mystery in the plot is won't go well with people who continue watching to discover what happens next. I mean, I love girls that kick ass and all but there needs to be something more. Without it, it would be kind of ridiculous. There is no need for a reboot anyway if they're going to be doing that, they really need to create something else than rebooting everything out there.

Date: 2010-06-02 08:15 am (UTC)It's just sad at how low the show sunk. I think I sighed with relief when it was announced to be canceled, because it would be putting the show out of its misery.

Date: 2010-06-02 01:31 am (UTC)I miss Heroes, back when it was good. Even though I was still watching until it got canceled lol. I feel like rewatching the first season now.

Date: 2010-06-02 08:45 pm (UTC)I read somewhere that someone was blaming the writer's strike for Heroes downfall, which is kind of ridiculous because many shows were suffering from the strike in general but all got back on their feet. Heroes has been struggling to find their ground for a long while now and they've had time to get their shit together. So, it's all about poor direction and poor writing.

Date: 2010-06-02 08:50 pm (UTC)lol, it was already starting to spin out. If there wasn't a writers strike, the show would have still gone downhill. They had more then enough time to get it together, but it just got worse. It seemed like they kept turning back to what was popular(flashbacks/flashforwards, Sylar, Claire jumping off of something to feel human, Hiro saving the world by time travel), instead of fixing it.

Date: 2010-06-02 08:57 pm (UTC)The show really turned into a train wreck, and just reading up on those that defend those mistakes are amongst the lulziness of the entire thing.

Date: 2010-06-02 09:06 pm (UTC)Wait they backtracked on Sylar, took the HBICness away from Angela, and tood HRG badass-ness away instead of further developing them lol.

Date: 2010-06-02 09:15 pm (UTC)They also wrote off Molly and Micah and Monica without any explanation, and made Matt a complete douche.
It's just, so much fail regarding this show it's so laughable now when you think about all the bullshit they tried. It also makes you wonder now that the show is over what the actors can now say about the show and how it ended up, since they're no longer contracted.

Waaaaay too early for an Alias reboot. *fingers crossed for The Cape*

Date: 2010-06-02 07:38 am (UTC)At least now the actors can move on to better things?
The fact that they're thinking of a reboot is just stupid. Isn't there a rule that you have to wait a decade or two to pass before even considering a reboot of something else? If not there should be, too many things are getting rebooted when they should be left alone.

Ooooh...it's a superhero show (which I admittedly am a sucker of) and with Summer Glau? I'll definitely be tuning in. I hope it's good.

Date: 2010-06-02 07:16 am (UTC)The trailer looks pretty promising, but of course we're going to have to see how it plays out before we judge. But I'm a sucker for Summer Glau, I'd follow her anywhere she goes with her career so. ;)

Date: 2010-06-02 07:00 am (UTC)For any show, that's just pitiful. Especially with the claims that they would fix the mistakes when they didn't.

Date: 2010-06-02 06:42 am (UTC)That was the biggest news to come out of this recent season. I was shocked to learn that nobody had the audacity to treat these actors like human beings.

Date: 2010-06-03 01:50 am (UTC)It's like suffering secondhand embarrassment as a former fan, you know? Such a travesty the show ended up where it did when it could have done so much better.
