I want to thank nicole_anell for pointing this out, which I wouldn't have bothered to look for it myself because I don't particularly care, but this is just too ridiculous to not comment on. Dirk Benedict, who played Starbuck in the original BSG, is known for being butthurt and a misogynist when it came to the new re-imagined series where the character of Starbuck is being played by a woman. He loves complaining about it whenever he can. Which you know, whatever, he's free to think whatever he wants to. That was back when the series was just starting, I believe.

Well, apparently he's still very butthurt and misogynist about it. But that's not all he comments on, this is what he says about the new BSG in general:

“They took a family show about morals, spirituality, love and hope and turned it into dysfunction, despair and disenchantment.

“They took a show that was black and white and made it grey. They got rid of all the charm and humour, and made it a dark, nihilistic, depressing experience.”

HE THINKS THIS IS A BAD THING YOU GUYS! ROFL! HE THINKS TELEVISION THAT HAS DEEP AND THOUGHT-PROVOKING MESSAGES, THAT CHALLENGES YOUR MIND, MAKES YOU QUESTION SITUATIONS AND THAT HAS MORALLY GRAY CHARACTERS AND OUTCOMES ARE HORRIBLE AND TERRIBLE. REALISTIC SCIENCE FICTION IS JUST WRONG, OKAY? WRONG. HUMANS ARE ALWAYS GOOD, CYLONS ARE ALWAYS BAD, AND GAIUS BALTAR SHOULD HAVE STAYED EVIL. AND HAVING AN ACTUAL PLOT THAT ADDS SOME DEPTH? THAT'S JUST BLASPHEMY! LOL OMG

This is just some hysterical shit. It's because of this that I cannot take Dirk seriously with anything he says ever because it's obvious he's still living in his own delusional world, probably has hardly watched any of the new series at all based on those comments alone. LOL CRY MOAR DIRK, PLZ. CONTINUE TO ENTERTAIN US WITH YOUR FAIL.

Well, with Avatar: The Last Airbender, the creators were able to make it into a family show even though the title character's nation was wiped out. Then again, the show's demographic aimed to younger people that BSG did! XD

I know! That was my reaction too! I'm like, getting away from awful cheesy 70s scifi and into realistic post-apocalyptic plots and storylines where they actually explore the complications of war? I AM SO THERE! Of course, how it's phrased you would think it would be some kind of parody or making fun of it, but since Dirk is being absolutely serious I don't know whether that's just sad or even more hysterical. lol

I think I recall that, or something similar to that. His views haven't really changed since then so, heh. But he really doesn't pay attention to anything other than his own delusions, does he?

He probably thinks he's justified because there are still some old fans of the original that think and feel the same way, but you know what? I say just let them think that. Let them live in their own delusions and be stubborn that way.

Gotta admit I totally read and thought that maybe he was being sarcastic because well...the dark and depressing tone of the show and the grey characters is what made the show so popular and critically acclaimed. Did he want a BSG sitcom or something?

I would have thought he was being sarcastic too had I not known before that he was so against the newer version and hated that they turned Starbuck into a girl, because really everything he's saying would be helping the fact that the new BSG got it's praise in the first place. But nope. He just wants to live in his own BSG world where it's all about him, really. Because he doesn't seem to be talking about other characters, especially Boomer who was also originally a guy who they turned into not just a woman but a Cylon. Just about his role and what the show turned into.

So butthurt, misogynist and self-centered. Nice going, Dirk.

I think that might be a reflection of his age, actually, or the era he was working in - though he sounds more like my grandparents, to be honest. But there's definitely a group of people who think that TV shouldn't be dark and depressing, but cheerful and just charming and fun to watch - 'good clean entertainment', that sort of thing. It's kind of like a relic of a time gone by, in a way.

But yeah, the rest of what he said? About how Starbuck just ~should have been a MAN~ and all that crap? Ugh.

Perhaps, but I think it's very interesting how he says that the original had "morals, spirituality, love and hope" when the newer version had the same frakking thing, just in the midst of all the serious and darker moments. I mean, I do understand that some people just don't see the appeal of the newer updated version, much like how those such as myself don't see the appeal of the older versions. But his claims are just ridiculous as it shows that he hasn't even watched an episode or tried to understand it, as I've read former fans of the original had the same reaction until they saw the miniseries and they calmed down from it. So, heh.

lol, I also find it hilarious how he continues to talk about Starbuck being turned into a woman. No mentioning of Boomer being turned into a woman (or a Cylon, for that matter).

For reals. I mean, the original might have been great for that particular era, but this is the 21st century dude. People don't want cheesy scifi anymore, they need something riveting and with compelling storytelling and characters and GRAY AREAS instead of things like PLANET CASINOS THAT MAKE NO SENSE WHATSOEVER.

I bit more lighthearted moments would have leveled out the angst for sure, but I loved the show as it was because it's just so damn epic.
