Well, this year isn't starting off as smoothly as I would have liked. Unfortunately for me, my main computer had gotten this nasty virus all of a sudden, a worm that sneaked through after inadvertently fixing some other minor problems it was having. I had been virus-free on that computer for nearly over a year, and it's just so ironic that at the start of the new year I would get one. Just my luck, eh? Things seemed to be okay now, although I am kinda scared to go back on the Internet for fear of getting that worm again despite having my firewall turned on, heh. There seems to be some other minor difficulties from the fix, and in truth it's gotten me a bit frustrated. That's technology for you, I suppose.

In other news, my mom has been asking me questions about Supernatural.

This amuses me greatly because first of all, she has little interest in the show. She knows it's something I watch and that I love it and listens to me babble on about it from time to time, but it's something where the only things she knows about the show is what I tell/show her via my fannishness. This happens a lot with my different fandoms to, she listens to me ramble on about my fannish interests despite having no clue what they are about, that whole smile and nod and "okay honey" sorta deal. But just recently, after showing her some specific clips (mainly of the Castiel-centric variety, naturally) she started asking questions about it. About him, when he appeared on the show, about the angel mythology, and so on. I try to explain the best I can, simplifying all the current seasons for her, but the thing about her, and some other people in my family, is that something they go for questioning about the logical explanations on the show. She wants to understand the rational parts of the show and how it all connects, and thus whenever I answer a question it makes her have more questions still based off that same question. She tries to make sense of something despite it having that fictional element of "take it as it is".

See, this is what happened when she started getting into Battlestar Galactica. Of course I don't think she'll be getting into Supernatural like she did with BSG because, like I said, not her kind of program. But interestingly she DOES read up on it online, such as the synopsis of the episodes and what has happened, because although she is not interested in the show itself she is interested in why I like it so much. So she researches it.

And this is why I love my mother, ladies and gentlemen. She doesn't have to invest an interest in a particular fandom, she just wants to understand why I like the certain ones that I do. ♥

My mom has listened to me ramble about fandoms so many many hours. Sometimes they are things she is into (she enjoyed Firefly a lot) and sometimes there are not.

Yeah, it's pretty much the same with my mother too. Some things she's curious in hearing about, like with BSG which got her interested enough to watch the entire series and now with wondering about my liking of SPN. She's very tolerate with handling my random babbling of my fandoms, although there are times when she's clearly blunt in going, "honey, I don't really care right now" in that warm motherly kind of way, of course. ;p

But I think, even if she might not really understand what I am talking about half the time, she just listens and that's just great. :)

Yeah. Even with things my mom likes, sometimes it gets to the point where she's just like, enough is enough. Apparently even my extremely patient mother cannot keep up with the level of my obsessiveness.

Aaaaawwww, that's awesome. My parents could care less about any of my fandoms, I tend to do all my fandom ramblings to friends who have no idea what I'm going on about but are nice enough to pretend that they care.

I feel like if I try to talk to other family members about my fannish interests they just won't get it, whereas with my mom she might not watch the shows or anything but she knows enough to understand why I do, and it's this that she knows me better than anyone, I think. She knows what I like, what I don't like, what I watch and what I've stopped watching, who I am obsessed with most recently, etc.

I mean, she associates Supernatural with Misha Collins because I talk about him constantly. She'll see his name in something, either a movie or show he did, and call me up to go "hey, your angel dude is on such-and-such" and it makes me laugh. Hey, at least she knows! XD

your mum really sounds awesome! :D

i don't talk about stuff like that with my mum, mostly because i don't think she'd understand, and it'd be awkward, but luckily i've got my sister for that, seeing as we're pretty much in the same fandoms and ship the same pairings. :D

but oh man, i'm sorry about your computer! i hope it's all fixed now, and that it'll also stay fixed.

She is totally awesome. I love her. :)

The thing though is I talk about fandom without mentioning of the online fandoming that I do. Like, I can have a casual discussion, whether it's one-sided or not, about something that I like with her without having to deal with the fandomy baggage that comes with it. Or, since my mom is more of a casual watcher of many things and doesn't really care about the online stuff anyway, I can talk with her about things without worrying of things like pairings and the like. More often than not we have more meta-discussions in a way.

I mean hell, she knew well enough to understand why I wanted to go to Chicago Con so bad, and had to suffer through me squeeing about it before I went, during the trip and long after I came back from it. Haha, I love my mom. ♥

I'm praying it stays fixed now too. I'm taking extra precautions with the whole thing now. I was generally afraid to go back on the Internet with my main computer because, well, that's how the virus snuck in! lol Everything seems fine. Let's hope it keeps it up. *crosses fingers and knocks on wood*

My mom she kinda does the whole 'OK honey' thing and occasionally she sighs at it. She's the kind of person who falls asleep while watching something, whereas I get so enraptured in it that I was tested for epilepsy twice (true story).

Your mom seems absolutely awesome :D :D Oh, and btw, that Christmas card? Will be a letter/note being posted at sometime near from now :) Apologizes .

Hee, my mom kinda falls asleep too, but that's usually because she a hardworking woman with a full time (and exhausting) job and the only time she has a chance to sit down and watch anything is during the evening, and she dozes off and misses certain points. She'll call me the next day going, "what did I miss?" or "what happened between this scene?" Which is kinda cute. :) But yeah, my mom is the awesomest mother ever.

Oh, no worries bb. :)

I do all almost my show-watching with my mother.

I would love to do that with my mom, but she's a very busy woman and sometimes we like similar shows (we started watching Medium together and Heroes, before Heroes got so hilariously bad, as well as Firefly, and I kinda got her started on Leverage and Psych and of course BSG), but other times we kinda clash on the shows.

Then again, my mom hardly has time for television watching anyway, so it's more of her hearing about my shows and seeing whether she would like them or not. Heh.

We like the same stuff and she's usually not too busy to see something once a day. It's great. Right now we're rewatching Buffy.

It's the new year curse, apparently. Someone creates a virus or does something to screw with everyone's computer and gets a kick of seeing others miserable. *sigh* Technology can definitely be a total bitch.

If there's anything worth talking extensively about, it's the mythology of the show. I find myself more enthralled with the mytharc, particularly the religious themes used in Supernatural, than anything else. I mean it's something that is so fascinating to be, and it's something that has been a major feature in some of my other shows too (Battlestar Galactica and Carnivale has similar themes of playing with religious mythos in the overall plot), and it's something I LOVE have discussions about. I tend to be very meta-giddy with these kinds of things, obviously, and it's something my mom has been asking about recently. IT'S JUST SO MUCH FUN! I might be a bit of a nerd here for saying that, but it's so true. ;D

True that. I think I may overanalyze too much though, but it's all good. Analyzing is what I love to do, and I love thinking outside the box and just going OMG THAT IS JUST AWESOME!

I remember during SPN S4 premiere when it was revealed about Castiel being an angel, me and my sister practically were squealing with delight. Not just with the expansion of the mythology in the show but the fact that there's ANGELS IN SUPERNATURAL. And I went off going to research everything I could, really getting into theology just talking about it and how it's portrayed in the show and, really, it's just awesome.
