But don't you speak for me.
Sep. 3rd, 2020 02:35 pm++ We have a trailer for The Haunting of Bly Manor. I really loved The Haunting of Hill House, which was an unexpected surprise with just how amazingly good it was and how emotional I got by watching it, so I'm incredibly excited to get more of this new anthology series.
++ We also got an official date for the second season of The Mandalorian, October 30th. Now all we need is a trailer....
++ Apparently it's been reported that Pretty Little Liars is potentially getting a reboot? By the creator of Riverdale? And with the limited information we've gotten, it'll be a new story with new characters, which I guess would essentially just be in-name only? I don't know why this is needed, furthermore I don't understand this obsession with rebooting things, especially of popular franchises, that just ended in recent years. (I mean, I do know why, but I don't understand why it's still a thing when it's been proven that it's hardly that successful.) There are so many other things you can do, like adapting another YA book series into a show, or having an original story idea of your own. It is so unnecessary, and I'm just so tired of this being a constant trend.
Just bring back Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists from cancellation. That spin-off would be more preferable than this, imho. (Also because there is a high demand for it, based on the petition, and I'm still bitter it was cancelled.)
++ John Boyega doesn't hold back when he gives his honest thoughts about his experience on Star Wars sequel films. It's an extensive but good interview.
As someone who considers herself a very casual watcher of the Star Wars franchise, and only was invested with the first of the sequel trilogy, hearing about what John Boyega went through over those years truly is horrific and disgusting, from being sidelined in the films after originally being marketed as being a huge part of the main cast to enduring endless counts of racism. Those movies did a massive disservice to him, along with Oscar Isaac and Kelly Marie Tran. I'll be honest, I remember being so excited seeing more variety and inclusion in the SW universe, I think many were, but unfortunately it just wasn't what it was hyped up to be, as in the marketing got our expectations high and we, along with the rest of them, were letdown. These films had many issues, and the treatment of their cast was one of them, particularly those who are POC. I know that John Boyega has been very outspoken about this, and I'm glad he's continuing to do so, which is a huge risk for anyone who isn't white because of the chance of being blacklisted within the industry is incredibly higher simply for speaking out. Though considering our social and political climate right now, there's been a massive outlet for black and other POC actors calling out the racism and discrimination that they've faced in the workplace. So hopefully TPTB will start listening and realizing they need to do better.

Date: 2020-09-04 04:21 pm (UTC)Especially the last part. Or even doing a take. If we're honest, all art is derivative on some level - at the same time, there's faintly derivative and there's yet another reboot. Of something from what, four years in the past? I get modernizing older media, that's always kind of fun (especially when you can fix problems with representation and how certain issues were handled), but Pretty Little Liars is a little much.
I also want to make clear that when I say all art is derivative on some level, I mean all art may have some derivative aspects, not that all art has a sort of "lineage" per se. Firefly was VERY much inspired by Star Wars, yet it has its own story and universe. What happened to creators just doing that? Drawing from other media and creating something of your own.
(Admittedly, it is harder I think for movie and show writers to be too creative, because of all the channels they have to go through. So maybe that's the real issue, everyone up top is dismissing the original ideas. I know someone who wrote a film with a strong female lead who was turned into nothing, and the whole film in general was changed. He got writing credits for something so different from what he actually wrote.)
I only saw one of the new Star Wars movies so I didn't read too much of the article, but it sucks to hear that Finn apparently got shafted. :/
So hopefully TPTB will start listening and realizing they need to do better.
I hope so. They really needed to do better a long long time ago.

Date: 2020-09-04 07:33 pm (UTC)Yeah, this is something I wish would happen more often, modernizing older pieces of media. Not that those can't go horribly wrong, but at least it would be a new approach on something that we can further examine through a different perspective. BSG is a good example of taking an older property and re-imagining it and it made the series more relevant to our times, because it shows that they had a plan of action and knew what they wanted to do with it. But rebooting something that's just recently ended just for the sake of profiting off of its popularity is just lazy, plain and simple.
So maybe that's the real issue, everyone up top is dismissing the original ideas.
Yeah, I definitely think that the issue isn't that creators aren't coming up with new and fresh ideas, because I'm sure many are all the time, it's just those original ideas are immediately shot down by the higher ups who are wanting to do something that is fast, cheap, and easy, not to mention familiar to the masses (or even following particular trends on pop culture). Having something too ambitious or unique can be incredibly risky, since there's obviously money involved and they don't want to waste that kind of money on something that is going to be too expensive to produce and where there's going to be a big question mark on how successful it may become. It's why whenever we get something new and different, it's refreshing from all the bland other things that take up space on television or among movies that are being released.
Obviously it's a huge issue within the industry, and many creative individuals often feel either discouraged or burnt out by trying to break through the door to get their projects out there (and, as you mentioned, unfortunately either creators get pressured into changing things or their projects get changed without their consent so their original idea is completely lost in the final product). It's also why I thought places like Netflix or other streaming services were innovative for creative types, because there's been this push of allowing more creative freedom, but that's been proven to not be the case anymore. There's still some incredibly creative things being made, but places like Netflix cancel them after one season if it's not up to par with their preferred numbers, which sucks.
I only saw one of the new Star Wars movies so I didn't read too much of the article, but it sucks to hear that Finn apparently got shafted. :/
He really did, and it's so sad. :(

Date: 2020-09-04 07:52 pm (UTC)The sad thing is that many black and other POC actors go through this all the time. And it's only now with everything going on socially and politically that many are having the confidence to speak up and give their stories of how they've been mistreated, and probably are still being mistreated in the workplace, potentially risking their livelihoods over voicing legitimate concerns of being discriminated against. And it sucks that this even needs to happen, but hopefully things will change within the industry in due time.

Date: 2020-09-07 01:21 am (UTC)I don't understand rebooting PLL so soon after it ended. Plus they had two spinoffs that didn't make it past season 1 so I don't understand how they think this will do well? Clearly the fans prefer the original show...

Date: 2020-09-07 05:28 am (UTC)There's been so many unnecessary reboots of things that just recently ended, or just in general of well-loved things, so it's not really a surprise that they would jump on any opportunity to do this. But it's not really needed. The fans don't want it, and if this is going to be just in-name-only why not, I don't know, just not do a reboot and just do something else entirely? It makes no sense, and yet they keep doing this.
Make no mistake, PLL became an incoherent trashfire the more it went on, many fans know this, but it was a very popular show that premiered at the right place at the right time and there's a reason people kept watching as it progressed. It had something going for it. So trying to do this is just really dumb, imho.

Date: 2020-09-07 09:12 pm (UTC)I still haven't read the John Boyega thing though I plan to. Tbh, all the drama with the latest Star Wars (fandom AND production wise) has completely put me off from Star Wars, which is really sad because it gave me much joy in the past. So sad.

Date: 2020-09-07 09:53 pm (UTC)Sadly, new ideas are too risky for the industry. They like falling back on things that are familiar.
I've never been huge with SW. I'm someone who watches it casually, but never got that deep into the fandom side of things and from what I know of that fandom....yeah, it's not pretty. And it's never been pretty, either, so it's not just a sequel trilogy problem this has occurred pretty much since the beginning. I mean, all fandoms have their toxic sides but the SW fandom has a long history of that. I've learned to just stay out of any of that and enjoy what I like in my own corner. But it can be really exhausting even just glancing from the sidelines, so it's understandable how it can put even those who are mildly engaged with the franchise off from it.
The only SW thing I love right now is The Mandalorian. That's basically it.

Date: 2020-09-09 05:34 pm (UTC)I'm a lover of all things horror, so I don't really get scared necessarily, just fascinated by it. Psychological horror is possibly the most effective, which I can see why some don't particularly like it because it does creep up on you in that way, but that's kinda why I love it. Some of the best horror stories that I've come across are of that nature, so The Haunting series is just right up my alley.
