In general fannish news, I'm in the middle of watching the new The Baby-sitters Club series on Netflix, and so far I'm really enjoying it. It's super cute, and I like how it's staying in spirit of the books while being an updated version for modern times, pretty much like how I suspected after watching the trailer. Each episode is half-an-hour, and it's just really fantastic. I really love the vibe of the whole show, and I love how inclusive it is to fit in with today's social climate, and it's just really great. There's not really much else to say about it, aside from how adorable it is and how I want there to be a second season. I think if you're looking for something lighthearted, this is the show to go for at the moment.
Doom Patrol is back and I'm just enjoying the wild ride of that show.
Agents of SHIELD is in the middle of its seventh and final season, and I'm really liking it, perhaps better than the sixth season. I like the concept of them time-traveling and going through the different eras. Also seeing Enver Gjokaj return as Daniel Sousa (from Agent Carter) and him having a bigger role was honestly a pleasant surprise. I'm loving it so much.
As a whole though, I have to say I'm sad this is the last season because after this there will be no more Marvel shows (that are non-MCU based, that is). I may have shared this before but it's incredibly relevant and true, there was an article written about how we're losing something important with all the cancellations of Marvel shows. I'm someone who doesn't really care all that much about the MCU movies but loved all the Marvel shows that existed, it honestly truly sucks that we're losing something that actually took risks with Marvel properties. But it's ironic that Agents of SHIELD, perhaps one of the most overlooked and underestimated of Marvel shows, is the last one standing. And I think it was the first Marvel show in recent years before any of the other ones came on board, so yeah, it's quite fitting in a sad way.

Date: 2020-07-17 01:19 am (UTC)Totally loving this season with AoS esp. with Sousa.
Would have love to see Agent Carter do a cameo though.
And yes.i feel sad there will be no more MCU TV.

Date: 2020-07-17 08:47 am (UTC)I loved watching the 90s show and the movie, those were part of my childhood along with the books themselves, so seeing an updated adaptation is pretty cool.

Date: 2020-07-17 08:55 am (UTC)I know that Disney+ is going to have their own MCU-based shows, but it won't be the same. It most likely won't take the same risks as these Marvel shows did, which is a damn shame. What I enjoyed about these shows was, even if they existed in the same universe, they were all different from one another. They all had their own individual style and tone. It sucks that we're losing something so great. Plus, I was really looking forward to seeing the Ghost Rider show that was being planned, dammit.

Date: 2020-07-17 09:19 am (UTC)Totally agree about the uniqueness of the TV shows though.
Both seasons of Agent Carter, which in my books could have at least another season going for it.
It will not be the same with Disney.

Date: 2020-07-17 09:40 am (UTC)Daniel Sousa is such a great addition to the show! I'd also say I like this season more. Season 6 just seemed to detached from the rest.
I love the MCU movies, but I also loved a lot of the shows. They made some nice references, but were just barely part of it. I liked that. The movies never overshadowed the shows. Now it'll all be part of it. While I love Bucky and Sam, it doesn't really feel the same. The characters were introduced in these big movies, but it's not like they had any real development and if the shows do add more, it's not something that a lot of the movie audience will see.

Exactly, though this sounds like a marketing ploy to get people to subscribe to the service. That's all I see whenever I think of how exclusive this content is.
But it's true that the Marvel shows existed without being beholden to the MCU formula, they could reference things that happened in them but it wasn't really tied to them so they could do their own thing, which allowed creative freedom and explore more things that the movies couldn't. And that was a good thing. Even though I know AOS was underneath contract to coincide with events that happened in the MCU, at least in the beginning, they did branch out and just did their own thing, and all these shows gave lesser known characters from the comics a chance to shine. Now, however, that can no longer happen and I'm honestly so pissed.
I'm just going to be forever bitter about this. There was a way for both Marvel television and Disney+ MCU shows to coexist, and they just screwed it all over. Ugh.

Date: 2020-07-18 01:07 am (UTC)The only thing I didn't like was that the book The Truth About Stacey was actually ahead of its time a bit in that it portrays a character (Stacey, obviously) who has a disability, and is basically overshadowed by her parents deciding how she should be handling it, rather than allowing her autonomy over her own body. She even says "my body, my choice." The show doesn't go there at all, and with all of its other progressive themes, I thought that was a missed opportunity. (I know all of this because I re-read the book in an attempt to snark it many years ago. But it was so earnest that there actually wasn't much to snark about it!) But maybe we'll get it later.
All in all, simply adorbs.

Date: 2020-07-20 04:39 pm (UTC)Well, Helstrom is still coming to Hulu in October, but I don't think anyone really expects it to last more than one season.
