The Hamilton movie will be dropping July 3rd on Disney+, months before its original premiere date. This is great news for those who have the service, not so great news for those who don't, either by choice or because the service is not available where they are. It kinda sucks that it's Disney that's in charge of this because it should be accessible on other platforms. With that being said, considering that this was initially supposed to be a theatrical release, hopefully it means that it'll be getting a DVD/Bluray release in the near future because I need it so bad. And hopefully it does well enough that it'll boast the chances of other Broadway musicals to professionally film and distribute their performances so its accessible to everyone.

With that being said though, I have to admit, I'm kind of disappointed I won't be seeing this in an actual movie theater with other Hamilton fans because I was really looking forward to the inevitable sing-along that would happen.

But hey, we gotta adjust for that quarantine life. And if that means I get to watch and just unabashedly belting out the lyrics in my pajamas in the privacy of my own home, so be it! (Like I didn't already do that with the soundtrack anyway, lol.)

I am trying out Disney+ right now for all the Narvel stiff.

I just don't uderstand why they chose Disney+. It seems like an odd choice. Though a lot of thester people like Disney too, so maybe there is a correlation. I also think it would've been a great opportunity to see it in the theatre. Although maybe not, crowds can be very hit or miss. Still, I'm sure theaters would have singalongs.

Maybe once the quarantine is over? But there might be rights issues involved there. I wish they had gone a more universally accessible route. Even google play or YouTube. Although google play may still sell it.

ETA: According to google, it is being releeased early, which I think means theaters will still get it. They are not exactly happy, though, because they're now losing out on what would have been a huge blockbuster. There will still be crowds, I'm sure, but not the same way. And it is Disney+ because of lost park revenue. I imagine they made a fast grab.

Apparently Germany will also get it on July 3. They disappointed me with Onward (still no date for that), so this is a pleasant surprise. I don't know much about Hamilton apart from the huge hype surrounding it. I'd never thought I get the chance to see it.

I think I read somewhere that Disney paid $75 million for the rights to this, way back a few years ago. Perhaps they're figuring that if this can tempt people to stump up the $50 or whatever Disney + costs, it might actually make more money than releasing in theatres? And they will still have that option later for all of the people (like you and me!) who'd want to have the theatre experience, with big screen and surround sound.

I'm happy to have the show so early but there is a little something lost from not being able to see it in a movie theatre with a lot of people. You're right that there's a little something lost in that.

But I do like getting the musical - I know a lot of people lost their chance to see the show recently as it's on tour in a few places (and still in NYC of course) so getting a chance to see the show will appeal to them. And yes - quarantine life is weird but at least there hasn't been a shortage of theatre to watch ;)

Disney+ will likely see an uptick in subscribers which will be good for them :)

I do hope that, somewhere in the near future once things start calming down and it's safe to reopen movie theaters again, that it'll have a theatrical release for a small amount of time so people can still enjoy that experience. Some movies have done that in the past, especially for something incredibly successful.

But truthfully, many movies have been affected by this. Some have been pushed back until further notice while others are or going to be released on streaming platforms. It's going to be really interesting to see how things play out.

Considering that Disney+ only has had The Mandalorian during its initial launch, having the biggest musical to come out in recent years be released on their platform will be massive. Not gonna lie, it's a smart business move. Many people have been itching to see the professional recording of Hamilton and, even if people don't want to get Disney+, they can do the free trial in order to view it. It does suck, however, for those who don't even have Disney+ in their country yet.

It's so wild that of all things the Trolls movie sequel likely really shook up how movie theatres will run post Covid. I think there is some great joy in seeing a movie in the theatre with others but I also have been really irritated by audiences who are on their phones for a movie or who talk a lot etc. Watching at home has it's benefits and saves me money to do the VIP screenings of movies that I really want to see on a larger screen.

I figure that a lot of people who don't have Disney+ will be torrenting. There's no way that doesn't leak in the first .5 seconds that it's online.

So far I enjoy Disney+ They have some fun content, lots of nostalgia, and I suspect it'll be a platform that I want for a while.

Interesting. I kind of wish that Disney was taking over everything for obvious reasons, but if it works out for their streaming service I do hope that eventually it'll warrant a later theatrical release (once everything is settled in the world and theaters reopen safely) for people to enjoy, as that has happened before with other movies that have been successful. Because I really want that theater experience of sitting with plenty of other Hamilton fans and enjoying that experience.

That's great news! :D Although there are bootleg versions of the performance available online (which I've only seen a few clips of), getting a chance to see the professional filming of the original run of the Broadway show is going to be utterly fantastic.

Well, Disney did buy the rights to Hamilton some time ago, so it does make sense in a way that Disney+ would be the service it would go to if it was going to streaming first. With that being said, though, I do wish that it wasn't just Disney+ because not everyone has it (or wants it).

it is being releeased early, which I think means theaters will still get it. They are not exactly happy, though, because they're now losing out on what would have been a huge blockbuster.

I mean, I understand the frustrations about losing revenue especially for something that would inevitably been a big blockbuster, but at the same time the pandemic has been affecting everything, and the unfortunately means some big losses within the entertainment industry and how from here on out there will be massive adjustments made. It's why some movies are being postponed until further notice. It's just a weird time right now and there's all this gambling of, "should we wait it out and see or bite the bullet and release it on streaming?" IDK, I'm happy that it's getting released early, though I do want to see it in theaters as well with other fans.

I was just watching a video discussing that whole situation, and I agree it's just so bizarre and wild. Of all things, it would be a Trolls movie, lol.

And it's true that watching at home has its benefits. Sure, it's not the same as having the full movie theater experience, but it's better than dealing with disruptive rude people and tickets being too pricey. I've found that I've gone to the theaters less and less than how I did back when I was younger. Granted, much of this is due to not being interested in most of the films that come out (as in recent years it's mostly been just reboots, sequels, and superhero movies), but also I know that these movies will be available to rent/purchase very quickly after its theatrical release so I can just wait. I've only ever gone to the movie theaters for movies I really, really, really want to see.

I saw that announcement! I echo your concerns because I don't have Disney+ right now. I've been super looking forward to seeing it, so maybe there's a free trial I can do or something.

I came across a bootleg version on tumblr once. My guess is that Hamilton won't be dubbed, so they can just add it :D

Yeah, I mean, being able to see it at all when I didn't think it was possible (aside from possible bootleg clips) is just absolutely fantastic. So I'll take what I can get. Plus, it seems like there is a possibility of it still being shown in theaters in the near future, so we might still get that experience, we'll just have to wait a little bit longer for that. But getting to see the performance early from our homes? That is awesome. :D

I mean, strategically it is a good business move, however many don't have (or want) Disney+ for various reasons, and having it only available on that streaming service is quite exclusionary. Although I'm sure that there's a free trial option, or not paying an obscene amount of money.

Exactly. I still go to the theatre when I really want to see something or when I think the theatre experience will add to it. But I prefer doing the VIP as that's comfy and 19+ and people don't tend to be in there on their phones because it's so frakking expensive to be there in the first place. That does mean that I go to less movies out though because even in the non VIP theaters the price has gone up quite a lot.

I don't have Disney+ at the moment (probably going to subscribe again when they drop more Marvel or Mandalorian). But I definitely like this release better than these $20 on demand releases. I'm gonna be doing a lot of waiting for things on rental for the next while.

There will definitely be singing in my jammies.

I remember reading how people cancelled their subscriptions after The Mandalorian was finished, because there really wasn't that much left to offer on the service. I mean, sure, it has nostalgia for those of us who grew up with Disney, however that's not really enough to keep it afloat, never mind the complaints some have had with them censoring older things that doesn't fit into the "family friendly" category which will obviously piss people off to no longer want to continue paying for their service.

Hamilton is the biggest musical to come out in recent years, so it's a smart and bold move for them to release it on their service earlier than anticipated to get more subscribers. (Though I wonder if they're gonna censor that too, since some songs do have profane language in them....)

I thought I read somewhere that Disney was panicking because instead of making insanely disgusting amounts of money, they are just making oddly crazy amounts. I was wondering if this move was to hopefully get people to sign up for Disney+ in June since they probably can't open up their parks.

I've been hearing rumors that Disneyland may reopen soon, which is obviously a bad idea but, y'know, big corporations care more about money than they do the safety of people. But regardless, I do suspect that this is a move because they're worried about losing money despite already being filthy rich as it is. This is why I despise Disney wanting to own everything and anything it gets their hands on, and why I honestly didn't like them buying Hamilton in the first place.

Well, someone had to sell it to them first :| I just hope that the entire cast and crew got a cut of whatever it was because you know it was a lot.
