To boldly go...
Apr. 12th, 2019 10:25 pm++ We're getting a sequel to Alicia Vikander's Tomb Raider movie! This is all I wanted after watching it in theaters. I honestly didn't think it would get a sequel because, sadly, these kinds of kickass woman movies don't always get the opportunity to grow into franchises that male-led ones do, especially if it's a video game adaptation (the Resident Evil movies got incredibly lucky for having been released when they did, and that got six movies which were all awesome). So I'm really happy that this is actually happening! Hopefully this will turn into a franchise, at least a three-part one to coincide with the reboot games they're based on.
++ In space news, we finally have the first official image of a supermassive black hole! While the image itself is a bit blurry, this is still pretty damn impressive and awesome since this is the first photographic evidence we have regarding the existence of black holes. The fact that this black hole is 55 million light years away and is pretty much bigger than our solar system is just mesmerizing and absolutely terrifying. And hopefully, there will be developments to help get a higher resolution of this black hole in the near future. Thank you Dr. Katie Bouman and the rest of the scientists of the Event Horizon Telescope project for making the unseeable possible.
++ I'm not going to lie, everything I've been reading about what Disney+ streaming will feature just doesn't interest me in the slightest, particularly the series with MCU characters. I think it's basically my indifference towards the MCU in general, but there's also this bitterness and worry about what will happen to the other Marvel shows outside of the Disney+ streaming that aren't necessarily tied with the MCU. We know what happened with the Netflix Marvel shows because of this whole thing, so I'm incredibly wary about Disney having so much control over these things now, and how much of this control will try to force other Marvel-based shows, not to mention the situation with the 21st Century Fox merger, to conform to their vision of things. idk. I just want more shows like Agents of SHIELD and Jessica Jones and Runaways and Cloak & Dagger, doing their own thing while still tied to the universe somehow without any interference from a big corporation and companies fighting over ownership of properties.
++ Hearing about how the Hellboy reboot isn't doing so well at the box office doesn't come as much of a surprise, though reading the behind-the-scenes tension and controversy is such a trip, even if unfortunate since that doesn't sound like a pleasant work environment at all. Regardless though, this is what happens when studios/the industry decide to screw over Guillermo del Toro in order to make a soulless reboot or sequel without his involvement or creative vision.

Date: 2019-04-13 12:48 pm (UTC)I haven't really heard anything about Hellboy apart from the fact that shooting was a disaster. Reviews also seem to be really bad.

Date: 2019-04-13 05:03 pm (UTC)I kinda figured the movie would be doomed from the start. I would much rather have Hellboy 3 helmed by GDT than a complete reboot, tbh, but the studios refused him that.

Date: 2019-04-13 06:01 pm (UTC)That's I'm thinking, too. They wanted to get rid of shows they aren't producing themselves.
that worry is still lingers about what might happen in the future
I get that :/
It probably also depends on how well Disney+ will do considering how many streaming services are out there/will be out there soon.

Date: 2019-04-13 10:24 pm (UTC)I would be excited if they offered Daredevil a new home even, but it’s all got to be family-friendly apparently, so I just don’t see that many single adults wanting to subscribe to it year round. Even with the Marvel movies, there are still only going to be so many times that people want to sit down and watch them each and every month. They need a better variety of tv shows as well imho if they want to attract as many subscribers as possible, and it sounds like Disney are drawing the line at any kind of gritty adult content, that puts Netflix at a massive advantage imo

Date: 2019-04-14 01:15 am (UTC)Yeah, since supposedly their monthly fees are less than Netflix they seem to want it to be a rough competition. But it's true that there's not really that much content. The Marvel stuff seems to be limited series only, and with other things that might not really interest a whole lot of people. This is why all this streaming war nonsense is frustrating, because you could have a few streaming services that have a lot of material on there for everybody, but now that companies are wanting their own damn services and not wanting to share and it's going to create a huge problem.

Yep, at this rate it's basically just going to be the Disney Channel 2.0, where there's little variety and only one specific demographic in mind, aka "family friendly" oriented.

Date: 2019-04-14 01:24 am (UTC)Yeah, and even though supposedly the monthly fee for Disney+ is lesser than Netflix, the fact that we're having these ridiculous streaming wars is going to backfire tremendously. On who is anyone's guess, but having so many streaming services out there is not going to bode well for most people, because even if you have one or two things someone wants to watch it's not like most are going to sign up for every single one. And Disney+ doesn't have a whole lot of content that seems worthwhile unless you're really an avid lover of the MCU movie characters.

Date: 2019-04-14 09:55 am (UTC)Yeah... Disney + :\ I agree I wish shows could just do their own thing, but I don't think that's what's going to happen :(

Date: 2019-04-14 08:41 pm (UTC)We just don't know what is going to happen, since Disney now owns Marvel and we know that they're very much a stickler when it comes to control nowadays. I know that maybe the shows on other networks and services owned by Disney (ABC, Freeform, Hulu) are probably going to be safe, but again we never know what they might try to attempt in the future.

Date: 2019-04-15 09:41 pm (UTC)I, personally, really loved the new Tomb Raider movie. It's fun and entertaining, Alicia Vikander does a fantastic job in the role, and it does follow a bit of the reboot games with some of the story. Even if you're not familiar with the reboot games, it's still easy to follow.

Cool. I might end up seeing it at some point.

Date: 2019-04-17 01:44 pm (UTC)I've heard AoS is ending this season, so it might not have to worry about the streaming anyway? Runaways and C&D seem to occupy their own slice of the universe apart from MCU, which is sorta what AoS managed so...tossup?

Date: 2019-04-17 08:01 pm (UTC)It's actually been confirmed that Agents of SHIELD will be ending next season, since it was already renewed for a seventh season before season six has even premiered. So it'll be either next year or the year after that where it'll officially end, depending on the number of episodes they'll have. As far as Runaways and Cloak & Dagger, while they're not directly tied with the MCU they do reference it here and there to make sure it's still connected somehow. Not as much as AOS, since they've been contractually bound to coincide with the MCU since the beginning, but it's still kinda there regardless.

Date: 2019-04-17 08:11 pm (UTC)I'm just pissed that the studios never gave GDT a chance to make a Hellboy 3 that he wanted to do, didn't even bother to give him the money even though the first two were good and got praise, and then after he'd moved on they jumped at the chance to make a complete reboot. It's kinda what they did with Pacific Rim, too, ruined something amazing for the sake of money.
