I solemnly swear....
Apr. 18th, 2016 06:48 am++ We finally have a new official trailer for Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. While I know some are quite apprehensive about how this might take on the American side of the Wizarding World, which is understandable, I'm honestly curious nonetheless. Much like how Rogue One will be a stand-alone precursor to A New Hope, this is also a stand-alone where it expands the universe and allows us to see what else has been happening with the Wizarding World that isn't related to the main plot of the Harry Potter series, and thereby quite different from anything we've seen. Though I'm wondering how well it'll do in theaters since, while I know some fans will most likely flock to see it regardless, I'm not entirely certain how general audiences will react.
++ And the first look at the Gilmore Girls revival just gave me all the nostalgia. Seriously, it was like time stood still since they all look practically the same. I mean, obviously they've gotten older, but they still look so good that it's uncanny. Plus, Melissa McCarthy will be back as Sookie! I'm still surprised and slightly confused that she wasn't approached sooner, especially immediately when the revival was announced, but at least we got her now.
++ Kesha performed at Coachella the other day, courtesy of Zedd, which even with everything she's been going through lately, she gave a powerful performance, being on the platform she deserves to be on with all the love and support of the fans and people around her. She shined so bright even in these dark times. I love her, and support her fully. ♥ ♥ ♥
++ I've been kind of addicted to watching Game Grumps lately. I have no idea when that started, I know I was introduced to them through other YouTube gamers that I watch, and I've seen a few clips here and there (most notably this iconic gem which got me real good the first time I watched it), but I finally got around to watching their series and just been cracking up laughing. It's been kind of the highlight of my nights for the last couple of weeks. So if you're ever in the mood to just laugh hysterically, I highly recommend going through their Best Of compilations which have the best moments of hilarity, since it can range from on topic moments to random absurdity. Fair warning though, they sometimes get into some NSFW conversations, which can often be hilarious too but might catch you off guard if you're not prepared.

Date: 2016-04-18 05:02 pm (UTC)I don't know that I see non-HP people going to see it, though. The trailer at least seemed to assume a certain familiarity with the series. But I also think it's pretty easy to have caught onto some HP stuff without really being a fan. That's how I was with Buffy, after all - I never watched it during its run, but I saw two episodes out of order and I had a basic idea of who was whom and so forth. So it might be like that for non-fans, just having to put a few missing pieces together.
I'm pretty excited myself! Not as excited as I think I would've been ten years ago, but definitely looking forward to it. I've always really wanted a non-Harry look at the Potterverse, and I actually think Newt Scamander is a fun, non-obvious example. I mean, a Dumbledore movie or a Marauders movie would've been fun, but totally expected and we would also know so much of the story. This isn't even a minor character, this is a footnote. Which sounds like a bad thing when I put it that way, but I mean it as a good thing - the entire story is a clean slate.

Date: 2016-04-18 09:09 pm (UTC)I was happy to hear about Ke$ha performing. I hope she's able to release an album and tour soon, I've always loved her music and it's horrible what she's had to go through lately. She seems like such a sweet person, especially to her fans.

Date: 2016-04-19 03:49 am (UTC)Yeah. I mean, while JKR is still developing and releasing information about the world, the main series which most were invested in is over. This is something new for fans to latch onto, at least those who are still interested in the universe beyond the main books.
Oh, Kesha. I have a lot of feelings about Kesha. Working on a very long blog post about that very thing. #FreeKesha
Looking forward to reading it.

Date: 2016-04-19 07:30 am (UTC)And definitely for the nostalgia, as well, like even the trailer itself has a remixed version of "Hedwig's Theme" for that familiarity alone to draw attention. So I definitely think a certain number of HP fans are going to be at this movie for sure just for the curiosity aspect of reliving this world once again on the big screen.
But I also think it's pretty easy to have caught onto some HP stuff without really being a fan.
Oh, without a doubt. There are certainly some casual fans who haven't even read the books but have seen the movies, and since Harry Potter is quite a cultural phenomenon in itself it has reached a level that almost everyone knows about it even without having read, seen or been involved with the fan community. And I'm certain, much like the fans, they'll be curious as to what this movie will be like.
This isn't even a minor character, this is a footnote. Which sounds like a bad thing when I put it that way, but I mean it as a good thing - the entire story is a clean slate.
I also see it as a good thing. We have new characters with fresh faces we haven't seen before, a different era and location, a completely different story to tell. It all depends on the direction the story will take and what the atmosphere is going to be like. Although already some thinking it's going to be boring because nothing in the trailers indicate anything interesting happens and there are no notable characters that we're familiar with, aside from the brief mention of Dumbledore, but I'm more than open to the idea of exploring more characters and other sides to this world than the one we were limited to in the main series.
I mean again, this world is incredibly vast and rich that we can basically go to any particular era with a fresh set of characters and tell their story.

Date: 2016-04-19 07:47 am (UTC)Kesha deserves freedom from her abuser holding her hostage so she's able to do what she loves, performing and releasing new music. Her performance at Coachella made me, and others, really miss her presence musically and I sincerely hope she wins her case.

Oh, definitely do. They're so funny. I like their commentary when gaming, it's a mixture of random nonsense to just amazing comedic timing that has me laughing until I've cried many times.

I started to watch more of YouTube gamerss lately, but it depends on what games they're playing. For some reason I enjoy watching people playing horror games, for instance.

Date: 2016-04-27 11:59 am (UTC)I really love watching people play video games. For me it's a combination of getting introduced to a game I didn't know about before and getting intrigued with the story that you might want to try it yourself someday along with the hilarious/insightful commentary provided by the player themselves. There are quite a few YouTube gamers who are so entertaining to watch and listen to, and the more you watch them the more you feel connected to them in a way. It's the same with any YouTuber, really; even if they all do the same thing, everyone is different with the way they approach their channel, and it allows people to kind of see which person appeals to them the most with the content they post.
