Asked by [livejournal.com profile] giallarhorn:

What's your favorite type of AU, if you have a favored setting or setup?

Oh goodness, I have so many. Pretty much anything surrounding your desired OTP doing the whole "mutually attracted to and pining over each other but neither know that the other is into them" thing, which leads to a lot of awkward situations including misunderstandings and then eventual getting together in the end. It gets me every single time. Falling in this category is one of my favorite AU tropes which is the "pretend we're a couple/married", because adorable shenanigans happen and there's pining and the eventual happy ending, of course. Anything with a happy ending is what I crave for, to be honest. I can read all the porn in the world and yet it's the fluffy fics that get me smiling and giddy inside. I fall for these kinds of AUs. Every. Single. Time. And I love it.

Seriously, I pretty much love AUs of all different sorts. It's interesting because there was a time long ago where I didn't care for AUs, but now I can't imagine not reading them. I'm obsessed with AUs, I'm not gonna lie. It doesn't matter how many I have read or how many scenarios and concepts have been repeated, every writer takes a different kind of approach, and anything that gives me happy feels is alright in my book. I'm such a sucker for that setting myself. And call me cliche but damn it if I don't love a Noir AU!

I love reading all those AU prompts and ideas on Tumblr! It's similar to the fanfic bingo that used to be here, just more elaborate and with so many more options. There are just endless possibilities and potential out there with ideas and I love when fanfic writers get inspired by those posts to write for some of those prompts.

Heh, the fake couple situation is really fun, especially when you pair it with adventure of the day when you have them going off into a place where no one else knows them and assumes they actually are a couple :D

I mean, arguably AUs are literally the soul of all fic since all fic is by nature, a variant or derivative of the original canon material but that's a very semantic, meta argument.

I'm also way more into AUs now than I used to be. I'm reading one right now that I will literally drop everything for if it updates.

They're just so much fun. I mean, fanfiction in general is very fun when you find the really amazing stuff, but there is something about AUs that really kind of proves that it can transcend any setting just as long as the characterization remains intact. :)

Ah yes, I love those ones, especially when they decide to play it up for others but then discover that holy shit they actually do have feelings for this person. I also love the ones where everyone knows how undeniable that sexual tension is except for them, until it is mentioned and the lightbulbs come on. Just, all the different ways of presenting that trope makes me so happy. :)

And yeah, essentially all fanfiction is pretty much derivative of the source material in some form or another, whether it be an extension or a fix from canon, but as a subgenre AUs are something quite unique in and of itself, you know?

I've read a few Noir-inspired fics myself, and when right it just makes me appreciate how people can take any particular genre or setting and make it applicable to these characters. :)
