Fandom of the year 2010...
Dec. 28th, 2010 03:00 pmYour main fandom of the year: As a whole I'm going to have to say Supernatural because let's face it, I have been posting about it constantly, both the good, the bad and the ugly. Plus I've been to conventions for that particular fandom (and only conventions featuring that fandom), so I'd say it qualifies in the category. Following pretty damn close behind as my main fandom would definitely has to be Caprica, or anything BSG-related for that matter. ;)
Your favourite film watched this year? Definitely a tie between Inception and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. ♥
Your favourite book read this year? Umm, I don't know? Haha wow, that's kind of sad...
Your favourite album or song to listen to this year? Selena Gomez's new album, "A Year Without Rain" It has been on repeat like, whoa. As for song I'm gonna have to go with "Take It Off" by KESHA.
Your favourite TV show of the year? Caprica because hello, how can I not love that show? Also Nikita is becoming another fast favorite since it premiered, and Warehouse 13 because it is my fun happy-making show and I love it so much.
Your best new fandom discovery of the year? Nikita as mentioned, since there's hardly enough ass-kicking leading females on television these days and we gotta be representin' the kickass womens. Haven is another new fandom that I discovered this summer on Syfy, I am also kinda in love with it. Others that I have tried and haved liked are: Pretty Little Liars which honestly surprised me in a good way, so addictive. The Vampire Diaries, since I now understand what all the hype is about, and I'm glad I'm finally in the loop. V as well, as I mostly watched that for Morena Baccarin, but it really is a good show in and of itself. Sherlock really surprised me too. I didn't expect to be that interested but hey, I love me some mysteries and the way they do a modern-day Sherlock is kind of fantastic.
Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year? Supernatural. If you've been following me most of the year you know this isn't much of a shocking revelation to hear. It's just been one disappointment after another, and it's gotten to the point where I'm feeling more frustrated than I am interested with the show these days. So I've been gradually distancing myself from the fandom in general. I'm still keeping certain things of relevance close, like the Castiel, Dean/Castiel and Misha Collins parts of fandom, obviously, along with all the lovely people I've met through this fandom, but otherwise this show is going on the backburner.
It's been said before from others, which I agree, that Supernatural is now that Bad Boyfriend type of show where you want to leave because you're unhappy, but it tries to make-up with you by playing nice so you stay, only to abuse you yet again. It's an unhealthy cycle, you see.
Your TV boyfriend of the year?

Your TV girlfriend of the year?
(Warehouse 13)

Your biggest squee moment of the year? Misha Collins recognizing me at LACon earlier this year and at Chicago Con. ♥ Getting to meet the fabulous Mark Sheppard and getting to geek out over Cylons. Hugging Richard Speight (three times) and Matt Cohen. Saying "you're fucking awesome" to Marksha, along with hugging him. Meeting Amber Benson at her book signing. TRICIA HELFER and KATEE SACKHOFF answering the comment I made during their live streaming video chat they did! \O/\O/\O/ Meeting the most fantastically amazing people at conventions...
....Seriously, when did my life become filled with exciting things? I don't even know.
The most missed of your old fandoms? Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Loved the show, loved the fandom, just love. Of course, now with the blasphemous news of the reboot movie it's spawned more activity from fans than ever before. I think that's a good sign, yeah? ;D I'm also missing the Battlestar Galactica side of fandom, because it seemed that after the series finale there's like NOBODY active anymore. They've all dispersed and it's just....strange. idk I miss being able to theorize and converse about who is the Final Cylon and all of that good stuff. Now it's all cynicism and that's just not cute. -__-
The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to? Misfits. I've been hearing about it everywhere and I'm vaguely curious as to how it is.
I'm currently playing with my new Christmas toys. Also I've been kind of shopping the after-Christmas sales and I bought myself the Dollhouse S2 DVD because hey, uber cheapo, how could I resist that? Plus it has the Epitaphs comic inside, which is pretty nifty. \O/
Now I'm off to watch the final episodes of Caprica, be prepared for some squeeing ahead.....

So much yes to this! TBH, I just look at pics and read reviews and I love the fan fiction but other than that, nada.

The universe hates us, apparently. Or rather, Syfy hates us. :(

Date: 2010-12-29 12:52 am (UTC)OMG YES IT WAS. IT WAS LIKE GOD WAS ANSWERING MY PRAYERS. I FELT SO FUCKING GIDDY AND FANGIRLISH TO THE POINT OF EXPLODING WITH JOY (AND SRSLY, IMAGINE ME GETTING TO MEET THESE TWO LOVELY LADIES AT SOME POINT, I MIGHT HAVE A HEART ATTACK OR SOMETHING) *_____*

Date: 2010-12-29 01:35 am (UTC)Yeah, and you already know the reasons why I feel the way I do. Which being the optimistic (yet opinionated) person that I am, it's definitely a huge disappointment how the show has taken its direction from where it started out and where it had been going. I'm still sticking around online fandom, obviously. I wouldn't dare leave with all the awesome people, and besides fanon is way better canon these days anyway. ;) But yeah, the show it's kind of like hit or sink at this point
and mostly it's just been sinking...no subject

Date: 2010-12-29 06:33 am (UTC)But the show has no bearing on my involvement in fandom. I was always in it more for the fic than for the meta, anyway.

Date: 2010-12-29 06:52 am (UTC)RIGHT? From the second half of the season and on, at least once an episode I was like OMFG! with my mouth wide open. Looking forward to your upcoming post!

Date: 2010-12-29 11:28 am (UTC)As for Misfits, you should definitely watch it! It's only 12 episodes between 2 season, and each one is so quality! <33333

Date: 2010-12-29 04:25 pm (UTC)I'm all about the meta, because I like figuring shit out and finding those connections. But that only works with shows that actually have something to go by. I used to think SPN had that. Unfortunately they are just pulling bullshit out of their asses at this point.
(not that I still don't theorize and speculate of course, but I find that my theories are much more interesting and plausible than anything the show does in the end; hell, head!canons are way better than real canon anyway)

Date: 2010-12-29 04:44 pm (UTC)I'm seriously contemplating it. I read what it's about and it seems rather intriguing. I'll put that on my list to watch, for sure. :)

Date: 2010-12-29 09:36 pm (UTC)So sad, isn't it? :/ I'll read a D/C fic once in a while, but I'm not watching the show - at least not for the time being. We'll see.

Date: 2010-12-30 03:01 pm (UTC)The constant inconsistencies and retconning, characterization failures and everything this season has given us is really confusing
One of the biggest things for me is the time jump, and now Crowley. I still can't believe he could even get Sam's body out of hell, and I can't believe that he did so just to get Sam to hunt for him, and I can't believe that he had the Purgatory plan all ready to go when he took over hell (why else would he get Sam out), and I really can't believe that all of these things happened THAT FAST (basically in 5.22), even when you take hell time into consideration. Also, I can't believe that Castiel didn't reply to Sam's prayers when Sam came back, considering that he only beamed back to heaven like five minutes beforehand. Way to make him completely heartless. And even if Cas didn't have answers, wouldn't that be something he would be fucking interested in, Sam escaping the cage?! It doesn't say very much for the season's big plan when I can't even make the event that set the whole thing off (Sam getting out of hell) make sense with the characters. The characters just seem to be doing things because the writers need them to, not because the characters would do them. < / end rant>

Date: 2010-12-31 05:54 am (UTC)I understand where you're coming from. While I love doing meta, there are times when I write in order to try and make sense of things rather than saying the connections are always there. You've read my episode meta-reviews and know precisely how I go about it, I question and make theories and wondering whether certain things will be explained. I put together things that I personally think would be great even if that's not precisely how the writing on the actual show does it.
Fanwanking is only fun when there's a clear path being led in the material. When there isn't, like with SPN for instance, they're leading us astray, the fanwanking because ridiculous because we shouldn't be coming up with better conclusions and results than the show.
As for your entire rant, I absolutely agree with everything you wrote. Especially this:
The characters just seem to be doing things because the writers need them to, not because the characters would do them.
That is exactly my huge issue with the show these days. There zero consistency with anything the characters are doing, their motivations or concerns. It's only whatever the writers want them to do for a particular episode with no sense of continuity, and that pisses me off. Now the fanwanking regarding that is unneeded because we shouldn't need to fanwank about character motivations or why they keep changing. I mean, there shouldn't be. We shouldn't need all of this unneeded exposition, all this bastardizing characterization bullshit that has been happening. Things that need to be further explained and not pulled out from their asses or TPTB expecting us to just accept.
The more we think about it, the more frustrating it really is. Perhaps I should just watch it with mindlessness and enjoy it like some of the fandom does. Enjoy the pretty and don't bother watching for the meta or plot or story. But I simply cannot do that, it's impossible.

Date: 2010-12-31 10:20 pm (UTC)This. We shouldn't have to figure out what the hell the characters are thinking. There's a difference between mysterious motivations and things being revealed, and trying to figure out why the hell the characters are doing what they're doing every damn episode.
Like Castiel was nice and enigmatic in S4. He was mysterious and distant, but it all made sense why he was that way. But I can't for the life of me figure out why he wouldn't answer Sam's prayers. And the time jump still bothers the heck out of me. Forgetting the Lisa thing, I can totally see Dean cutting himself off. However, I *can't* see Bobby and Cas just letting him, or not trying to contact him themselves. And Cas! Cas, you had that shitty goodbye in 5.22, and then you actually don't see Dean for a year?! What happened?! Seriously, that kind of goodbye is a normal Cas goodbye, not a 'possibly leaving forever' Cas goodbye. Cas is always abrupt, but damn. I don't think he's that clueless about farewells.

Date: 2010-12-31 10:55 pm (UTC)The shipper fangirl side of my brain automatically responded with "because he
loveslikes Dean better!", but yeah honestly that's not really an excuse for the show's lack of explanation for, well, many of the inconsistencies this season has pulled. Many things don't make sense when you really think about them, and unless they want us to just accept it face value, and I don't want to think of them thinking of us as being brain-dead or not intelligent enough to pick up on those kinds of things. But you sometimes got to wonder with how often they exposition things on the show....Nonetheless, there really are huge chucks of plot holes and unexplained things the show has yet to even answer, and probably never will.
