Day 30 - Saddest character death

Gabriel's Sacrifice
5x19 "Hammer of the Gods", Supernatural

Just looking at this graphic makes me kinda weepy, ngl. ;___;

This just wasn't the saddest character death I've seen recently, but it's the most devastating death that has come from Supernatural that I actually cried legit tears for. As soon as we hit the commercial break, I was silently sobbing because I couldn't believe they killed him not one but twice in the same episode, and this last time was for real. I was in complete denial long after, and yet I knew it was true. Not only was I devastated, I was angry too. Like, they just introduced us to the fantastic reveal of the Trickster being Gabriel this passed season, and there's much to explore with this character and his motives and they could have turned it around where he ends up fighting alongside the boys and Castiel, but they didn't. They killed him before anything else about his character was fully examined and fleshed out, and I think had they had some episodes prior to this one to do that, I still would have been affected by it but it would have made sense and I wouldn't have been so angry afterward. But Gabriel's death seriously had me in a fit of emotions after this episode aired. I don't think I can watch this episode again without tearing up.

Nevertheless, the very scene itself was very well done by both Marksha and Richard Speight Jr. They acted the hell out of their moments together with this being their first and last scene ever on Supernatural. The emotions coming from both sides and what makes this scene incredibly effective wasn't just Gabriel's words to Lucifer, but how Lucifer reacted to killing his brother. He was actually crying at the end, okay? He didn't want to, and neither did Gabriel in fact, and in that final moment with Gabriel clutching Lucifer's arm and Lucifer cupping his brother's face was any indication of how much they loved each other as brothers. You could tell there was major history between them just from that alone, and it makes me sadder than before thinking about it. ;___;

My second saddest character death scene in this show would have to be Ellen and Jo's deaths, because it was so beautifully executed but heartbreaking all at once because I loved those two and seeing them go was utterly tragic. :(

Other Runner Ups: Tara's death in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, because it happened so quickly we didn't get a chance to register it until after it happened and it's just, so fucking sad. And can I also add the entirety of "The Body" too? Because Joyce was already dead, but that whole episode was dealing with handling that death in such a beautiful manner that it would be a crime to not mention it. That's one episode you have to watch once a year or something, it's that emotionally draining. Fred's death in Angel, and also even though it's from the movie, Wash and Sheppard Book's deaths are two that I'm still not entirely over. DAMN YOU JOSS, YOU MAGNIFICENT BASTARD! *shakes fists*

Masterlist of COMPLETED days here.

Meme is now finished! I feel like doing another 30 days challenge because this was fun.

I really need to catch up on Warehouse 13, but I caught last night's episode and behold, Jewel Staite and Sean Maher were on it! It was like a Firefly reunion with the possible AU of what Simon and Kaylee would've been in the future together or something and just, d'awww. Such a shiny surprise, let me tell you. It me really hoping for more possibilities of cast reunions in this manner. \O/

That would be interesting to see how one would fill in all those days, lol. There's a Legend of the Seeker 30 Days meme floating about that I might do, just for the sake of prompting the show and all. ;)

GAAAAAAAABRIEL!!! *CRIES*

I was in total denial after the episode. My sister and I spent the whole night going, "They're going to bring him back. He's not really dead. He faked it! They didn't really kill him off? DID THEY?"

I was so heartbroken when I went to bed that night. It felt like my heart had sunk in my stomach, and I'm not being over-exaggerating either. Gabriel had become such a favorite so fast that to have them to that?? I think everyone in my entire neighborhood could heart my little heart shattering. I wanted to believe so badly that this was just a trick, that they would bring him back the next episode with him going "PSYCH! Gotcha boys good, didn't I?" But no, they didn't, which had me incredibly disappointed and wary with the show and how they were handling things for the season.

Of course with the news that they're thinking about bringing him back in the sixth season has me hoping and praying it happens. The only thing is how they're gonna do that.

Many characters have had tragic deaths from many fandoms.

I was actually depressed when I read Richard's FB message to the fans. Because that meant there would be no surprise!Gabriel at the end of the season.

God, I know. :( I started bawling tears at that too because, well, coming from Richard himself that meant it was really true. And his message was so heartfelt it broke my heart even more, and he was genuinely surprised and touched at how many fans were reacting to what happened in the episode. It made me love him even more because of that.

I had been counting on surprise!Gabriel in a desperate hope sort of way. But that meant that he really wasn't going to get brought back by the end of S5.

The episode makes it hard for me to watch because I know what's going to happen, and I get teary-eyed just thinking about it. Oh, Gabriel. ;__;

In my personal canon that's exactly where he is. He did his little Trickster work and managed to get inside the DVD and live there until someone decides to pop him out or whatever. *nods emphatically*

What makes it even worse is how much I was rooting for him to join the Winchesters and fight for humanity in this war, and he finally did, but he sacrificed himself to do so. It's like, no matter what supporting characters will find a way to get themselves killed even when doing the right thing. Gee, thanks for the optimist outlook, show. :( Never mind the fact that Gabriel is an archangel, and why would they kill off a frakking archangel as important as Gabriel? I just, I can't even. *insert more sadfaces and tears*

I didn't really think much about that until after Gabriel died, and the more I thought about it the more I realized that wow, this season just doesn't know where it's going and I had major worries about what was going to happen in the end, who was going to bite the dust next, etc. It made anticipating the last few episodes awful because I was dreading what was going to happen next. Out of all what happened this season, Gabriel's death still remains so painful for me because I loved him so much.

The thing that really kills me NOW, though, more than Gabriel even dying, is Lucifer's reaction to it. He just looks so heartbroken and regretful and UGH. :'(

OMG I KNOW RIGHT? JESUS CHRIST. The fact neither of them wanted to kill or even fight the other breaks me so much. They were brothers, they loved each other and in that scene it's so obvious of that. Just, omg. I wished it could have all been a fakeout. Like, there should have been some fighting with their swords (why do they have swords if they don't fight when them? That's always been my question...) and then Lucifer lets Gabriel go, like as a warning or something. That would have been nice.

I still wish we could have had more about the angels and their familial relationships, because that is much more interesting to me than the Winchester repeated issues bits. We could have gotten into this whole background thing with Lucifer and find a way of defeating him throughout the season instead of the last-minute add-ins.

...you should do the 30 Day Letter Writing Meme! The silly one where you write letters to dinosaurs and inanimate objects!

LOL, OMG SRSLY? THAT IS AWESOME. XD

Yeah, and it's because of Gabriel and those last few episodes that I am really rethinking my position on the show in general. I've always stayed optimistic as a default but, from the direction and writing-standpoint of what's been happening on the show I don't know how I feel about it and where things are going. :/ Mostly because I fear them fucking characters up more than they have already, that is and the entire story.

It really bums me out to think about the potential they wasted with not exploring the angelic family futher. I mean, who knows, they could delve deeper into that in season 6, but I kind of highly doubt it.

They said that after the apocalypse they were going to be done with the angel stuff completely, but with Castiel returning and Gabriel possibly making a comeback I don't know now. I know absolutely nothing about the sixth season other than I don't know whether I want to watch it or not. :/ Which is why I keep putting out the concept of a spin-off with the angels, because you know there are shitloads of people in fandom that would watch that. Mostly if they were to include Castiel and his journey/mission that they neglected this season with his search for God. Because I feel like that could have been more epic than anything else, for real.

But yeah, we should have gotten more scenes between Castiel and Gabriel, I'm just saying. That would have been nice. Same with Castiel and Lucifer and even Castiel and Zachariah, because Zachariah was Castiel's former superior because he rebelled. I would have loved to have seen a Castiel/Zachariah smackdown or something. So many wasted opportunities with all these amazing characters. *shakes head*

LOL THAT LIST IS TOTALLY AWESOME! So hilarious.

Oh, Fred's death. Fred's death was just... I don't even know. I'll ramble on about it on my Day 30. Joss is the most Magnificent of all Magnificent Bastards, though. That man. THAT MAN.

I agree with everything you said here about Gabriel's death. It was just such a punch in the gut, for so many reasons. Marksha and Richard... SO amazing together. Everything about Gabriel's death is made of sadness, even as it was also made of win, because he finally stood up to be counted with Team Free Will. But twice in one hour?! Fail.

YES, GAETA'S DEATH WAS SAD AND DEVASTATING TOO.

So were the majority of the deaths on BSG, actually. Ellen's death was very poignant in my mind, mostly because of Tigh's reaction to it and how he dealt with his afterwards.

They really should have had more scenes together. I wished for him to have shared more screen time with other characters, or just more Lucifer in general. He was amazing and I would have loved to see him kind of messing with character's heads or persuading them to understand his side, gain more followers and such.

The fact that Richard and Marksha just nailed that kind of chemistry in those few minutes is so amazing. Talented actors, they both be.

Joss is kind of the master when it comes heartbreaking scenes, making us care about characters, love them so much and then suddenly something devastating happens to them that just crushes you from the inside out. And even if you hate it, and hate Joss and his magnificently bastardy ways of doing that to you, you always come back for more. Nobody does it like Joss. Nobody.

After "Hammer of the Gods", I was so emotionally drained. It made me realize just how much I loved Gabriel and Richard playing that character. At first I thought that if they faked his death once, they couldn't possibly think about actually doing it for real, right? Gabriel has some tricks up his sleeve, I hope? I got panicky as their amazing scene drawled out because I had gotten that bad feeling in my stomach that something was going to happen, and of course my gut was right. That broke me completely. It made me sad and an emotional wreck, but angry too, for obvious reasons.

Mine too, not gonna lie. Marksha was a great addition and a wonderful Lucifer, and the fact they didn't use him enough makes me sad.

Me too. Mark just brought so much to the role.

So true. It makes me wish Richard and Mark had not only had more scenes with each other but had both had more scenes with Misha.

Isn't it kind of sad that we never had like, a group of angels together? A Heaven family reunion of sorts, since the Apocalypse was more or less about their own familial affairs with the Lucifer dealio that parallels the Winchesters who brotherly relationship, I find they could have at least had something to do with all of them to fit into that equation.

It was. I just wish they would have dealt with the fact that like Sam, Cas was kicked out of his family for not doing what he was told.
