Who watches the Watchmen?
Mar. 6th, 2009 10:34 am++ All you lucky bitches that get to go to the Creation Con in NJ this weekend and meeting Misha Collins, I'm super jealous yet excited to see your reports. I swear if I didn't have school and exams and practicals and preparing myself for graduation believe me, I would do just about anything to be amongst y'all right now. Just hoping y'all don't frighten the poor man too much with the spastic MISH MISH LOVECULT that has formulated.
++ I'm seeing Watchmen (hopefully) tomorrow, if we get times worked out and such. Though I'd like to direct you're attention to this woman named Debbie Schlussel who apparently has issues with the movie, in her own conservative-fundamental way of thinking. Just read what she's written, plus read her responses to people who've commented below, it's just hilarious and slightly disconcerning that she's serious about what she's written and is all butthurt if anyone disagrees with her. Researching the background on something isn't hard, folks. Srsly, just a search button away. And if you continue to bitch and complain about not expecting what you saw in terms of material or the story or whatever. Um, tough shit? Should've done your research beforehand and not make assumptions.

++ It's EPIC FANDOM FRIDAY NIGHT! \O/ \O/ \O/

tis movie concludes that the rape was a good thing b/c the slutty superhero had a slutty superhero daughter from him
Wow, so that's what it feels like to shove my fist through a computer screen in rage.

Date: 2009-03-06 08:04 pm (UTC)As annoying as she is, she has a point - the movie is definitely not kid-appropriate. The comics weren't kid-appropriate! Hell, I was disturbed when I saw kids at the latest Batman movie...my favorite part of her rant is at the end when she "rates" it 4 Marxs +. As a student of Marx, I have no idea what she's trying to say. Politically speaking I have a whooooole bunch of problems with the themes of the story - but the comic book geek in me can't help but be excited to go see it:D

THANK YOU for articulating my exact reaction to that sentence;)

Date: 2009-03-06 08:11 pm (UTC)(though growing up we had pretty dark-themed kids material, didn't we? that's all in comparison of kids movies today of course, so idk where I'm going with that...)

Date: 2009-03-06 08:42 pm (UTC)I grew up watching R-rated movies and turned out fine (at least I think so). I've read the source material a number of times and I know I will cringe and/or cover my eyes during some parts.
This, exactly.

Date: 2009-03-06 08:43 pm (UTC)Hell, I was reading Stephen King books at age 8, and I turned out (relatively!) fine. I think there's a complex balance between emulating behavior you are exposed to, and emulating values you're taught. It's a difficult equation:/

Date: 2009-03-06 08:52 pm (UTC)I completely agree. I mean, I have no problems with parents having their children see something that might not be age-appropriate but having a discussion later about the "rights" and "wrongs", "good guys" and "bad guys" and values and what it all means and whatnot. Sometimes it's for the best judgment of the adult to make sure the kid has the tolerance of such material to be able to tell the difference between fantasy and reality, which can be a great learning tool to educate the child occasionally. But then there are those that have nothing to offer, and just allow their kids to watch whatever they want as part of a "parenting tool" (ex. like parents that plop this kids in from of the tv or video game set to be the babysitter).

Date: 2009-03-06 09:38 pm (UTC)A few lines of dialogue by the character "Rorschach" deriding "liberals and intellectuals" doesn't excuse the nearly three hours of poison here.
...ROFL. When you perceive Rorschach's neocon vitriol as the voice of reason, there is something wrong with your mind.
I AM SO JEALOUS OF EVERYONE IS WHO MEETING MISHMISH SSJHDFSHYADFHASFDAH MISHAAAA.

Date: 2009-03-06 10:32 pm (UTC)On a slightly more vapid note: is it just me, or does Debbie Schlussel look like Heightmeyer from SGA? Because, well. Moralizing, judgmental, slightly creepy, and really not all that talented at her chosen profession? Check.

Date: 2009-03-07 12:15 am (UTC)It is, and I've seen hardcore fans rave about the movie because of how utterly accurate it is towards the graphic novel. I can't wait to see it.

Date: 2009-03-07 12:46 am (UTC)watchmen, i mean :) i totally think that people who havent read the novel might be WTF'ing at some bits. but srlsy. amazing. just EVERYTHING i hoped for. i hope you love it! havent seen a real violent movie in a while, so this one was fun haha.
Zack Snyder's love for the comic just oozes from every scene.
that woman is such an idiot, she keeps ranting on about it being marketed for kids, ITS RATED 18 HERE YOU STUPID WOMAN! and its what an R in the US? OBVIOUSLY NOT FOR YOUR KIDS!
and i hate when people dont like a movie and then diss the fans of it, deride them for being idiots. NO, *YOU* DIDNT GET IT, *YOU* ARE THE IDIOT, NOT ME!

Date: 2009-03-07 01:03 am (UTC)My thoughts exactly. Watchmen is not and has never been marketed towards children, just because there are people dressed in superhero costumes doesn't automatically mean it's appropriate for children. We have this consensus that superhero costumes = kidsafe and kid-friendly when, in reality especially concerning Watchmen, it is not. There are plenty of graphic novels that are not created for children's eyes.
It's rated R for a reason people. Read the description and educate yourself, don't be an idiot. Plz.
Yeah, and her bashing its fans because they are supporting the cause of the "downfall of America" or whatever she's spewing off in her pointless rant is just bullshittery. She has no say in what people should or should not watch, and with a film that is clearly having plenty of warnings about its content she should focus that energy elsewhere. Or just take a chill pill. All that negativity, it's not becoming on anyone.

Date: 2009-03-07 05:58 am (UTC)How in the world is it marketed for kids when the rating's an R and the trailer's all dark, saying 'superheroes... as you've never seen them before' and then flashing to some rather violent scenes. I mean, heck, the trailer contains footage of a man thrown out of his window! How is that kidsafe? The graphic novel was a piece of brilliance back in the 80s for taking the unconventional route and making superheroes real, fallible, screwed-up; the movie is similarly portraying the same idea, at the same time, showing that superheroes films are not necessarily for kids only. The Dark Knight was in of itself, pretty un-kidsafe with its various themes, and it was a PG-13 (I think), what more about this?
Seriously, anyone who walks into a R-rated movie expecting happy endings and rainbows and unicorns? INSANE. And geez parents. -headdesk- When the censors say R, you adhere to it and spare your child the nightmares and your dog your rantings about how the show was totally inappropriate for Junior.
