Just an illusion, baby.
Feb. 18th, 2009 03:31 pm++ Things have been going good for me so far, a vast improvement from the last two weeks. I have a good feeling about this semester, and I am like two semesters away from graduating so, yay!
++ It appears that the vampire craze has gotten much deeper as The Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith has been picked to become a television series on the CW. Okay, now I did read the first book, "The Awakening", years ago and I remember actually liking it, and I'm sure if I picked it up again and reread it I'd find it much cheesier than I'd recall it being...but probably way better than Twilight, that's for sure. I'd give it a chance and see how they adapt it, of course I had my own vision while reading the first book and who knows what changes they'll make and how different it'll be because it was written/published in like the early nineties.
++ More with the vampire talk, um, I'm actually gonna be trying out True Blood. I've heard interesting things about it, and I've been kinda vaguely intrigued, so yeah.
++ I have theories for SPN and BSG I want to get done, but I think I should do a meta-post for Dollhouse, as prompted by seeing a lot of people's comments regarding the show in general. I'm not going to get into it right now, but I have a feeling the show may be too deep and involved for most to understand beyond face value. Then again, it's only been one episode, but still. More on that later once I get around to it.

Date: 2009-02-19 04:01 am (UTC)Hmm, ANOTHER vamp show? Didn't that other one they just put out last year or so tank? Um....Moonlight maybe? I think that Joss was kinda the be all and end all for vamp TV shows, they shouldn't try to replicate any more :P
Oh ugh, I tried to watch that show, for like one episode, and I couldn't EVEN make it thorough ONE. The premise is completely ludacris to me, I just couldn't stop my head from going 'Nope, totally NOT possible....just no' the entire time, so I flipped it off. My BFF however, LOVES it.
Hmm, you know you may be right about the deep and involved thing. I kinda wanted to fast forward through it. I was like 'Come on, come one, next assignment please...'

I have no idea how you feel about Dollhouse but I literally just finished watching it. I really liked it and now I'm kinda bummed that apparently all of my flist really wasn't feeling it. Ah well. Either way, I look forward to your analysis. And, of course, your SPN thoughts as well. :)

Date: 2009-02-19 05:08 am (UTC)Heh, yeah. It's just odd because either people aren't feeling the show because it's unlike any other Joss piece of work, which is understandable, however there are those that are calling it "sexist" which I'm like ???? Srsly? People are thinking that, a Joss Whedon show? I don't even know. I've already read some people's analysis of the show, both positive and negative, so I'll add mine to the list as well.

Date: 2009-02-19 05:19 am (UTC)To me, the premise of True Blood is kind of interesting because it's in our world where the supernatural is kind of accepted, well perhaps not accepted exactly but known to the general public. It may seem a bit far-fetched and out there, but I've seen clips from YT and I've already been kinda intrigued based on what people have been saying about it, so I figured why not give it a shot?
I'm actually contemplating whether I should pick up the book first before watching some episodes, or do that afterwards to compare.
Yeah, I think many viewers were looking for all the answers then and there in Dollhouse, like the GIRL KICKING BUTT! WHAM! ACTION! SUSPENSE! kind of vibes that is normally there is a Joss show, especially centering around a female character. And I think many were either bored or offended by the fact that Echo is being "used" and isn't doing anything to defend herself from these people controlling her entire life, stealing her identity away. I'm like, um, that's the whole point? Dollhouse is very different, and Joss even stated that this is darker and has more philosophical feel to it than anything he's done, and it WILL take time and patience and people have to watch and assess the episodes and look deeper into it. So perhaps the show is too smart for viewers on Friday nights. *shrugs*

Date: 2009-02-19 06:05 am (UTC)Well true, that is why I stuck it out and watched the whole thing. We obvioucly have to stick around to find out WHY she went into the 'Dollhouse', I mean, there was the flash or whatever, but they didn't go into details. Anyway, I mean, it is Joss, so I am in :)

Date: 2009-02-19 06:32 am (UTC)IDK, but it's a unique way of taking the mythology and expanding it in that sense. I'll just have to see as I get into the series for myself. :)
I think people need to realize that it's the pilot, and not everything is going to be revealed or get as exciting all at once. This is going to be a slow build up to the greater and grander mysteries, and that requires patience from the viewer. Besides, I like a good mystery that goes deeper into the human psyche, and I think keeping that in mind will help people understand it better. Just give it a chance, ppl!

Date: 2009-02-19 06:43 am (UTC)And I mean, I would NEVER claim to have patience as one of my virtues, but man, I mean, if you don't want to watch it, just stop watching, don't endlessly bitch about it!
Sorry, used the wrong icon :)

Date: 2009-02-19 08:18 am (UTC)Yeah, I was so not into it at all, bored to tears! And I got a rec from the BFF on which one to watch, that she thought was one of the best ones, and still nothing!

Date: 2009-02-19 08:20 am (UTC)I watched True Blood, due to it being an HBO series, and Alan Ball was behind it. Didn't quite live up to my expectations, but still an entertaining watch all in all. It might have to do with me living the minor characters a lot more than the main ones :p
(oh, and I thought the second episode of the series was crappy, but don't let that dissuade you. It gets much better.)
I won't be reading your BSG and DH posts atm, as I'm cut off from seeing them for a while. I'm glad you're liking DH though :D

Date: 2009-02-19 08:26 am (UTC)I've heard a wide range of reactions to True Blood, so I'm just going to test it out for myself and see what I like as a whole. Also, YAY FOR LAFAYETTE ICON! :D :D If anything, Lafayette was one of the things that pulled me to wanting to watch the series, after seeing some clips on YouTube and whatnot. *g*
Dollhouse has loads of promise and potential, and even if the pilot seemed kinda iffy to some I enjoyed it and I'll continue to watch, no doubt about that.

Date: 2009-02-19 08:41 am (UTC)I trust Joss enough to give him quite a few episodes to get into his groove. Firefly didn't grab me by the lapels at once either, but now I've already seen the show twice, and working on a third go around with my friends *g*

Date: 2009-02-19 09:19 am (UTC)Yeah, me too. I mean, it's only the first episode, and generally pilots aren't like the rest of the series so, I'm sure with a few more episodes there will be more revelations. Even Joss and Eliza said that it's slow at first, but it picks up ratherly quickly a few eps in so, yeah, I trust them. :)

I know, shocker right? But getting her started might help. I can never turn down the opportunity to introduce someone new to BSG! ;Dno subject
