Warning: Musical Hallucinations
Jul. 25th, 2014 08:08 amSometimes I go on the spiral of finding things online and getting addicted to them (ex: most of my fandoms), and I recently discovered a new webseries that I quite enjoy.
Side Effects is a musical drama series where a household of five siblings are trying to cope in their own ways with the fact that, after the death of their mother, their father has up and abandoned them and they have no idea where he is. The main character, Whitney, takes medication for depression and one of the side effects of the medication? Musical hallucinations. During certain moments she goes into musical fantasy scenarios as means of coping with the harsh realities of what is happening in her life, from the loss of her parents and the dysfunction of her family, to the bullies in her school. It also helps tell the story in a unique way.

Depending on how well they're made, certain web shows can be a hit-or-miss for me, but personally I really like Side Effects a whole lot. It has high production quality, I like the contrast of the vivid hallucinated imagery with the grim reality these kids have to go through, and I have to say they do drama very well for a webseries; the pacing is good, not too long or short as I believe each season is about four episodes, and I like the ensemble cast. Overall, the concept, these characters, everything about series has me hooked.
They had their second season a couple months ago (Episode 1, Episode 2, Episode 3, and Episode 4), and with waiting for S3 it makes me curious about what will happen in the next chapter for this family.
