Date: 2007-05-05 12:29 am (UTC)Exactly. I mean, I'm sure Dean doesn't want to dismiss hunting in the real world, but he definitely had wished things had gone differently. The "what if" playing over and over in his head, never having to deal with the loss and turmoil they had all gone through despite the lives they saved. That's his vulnerable spot, that sense of normalcy that he disguises by hating it. Because he knows if he ever got a glimpse of that life he wouldn't want to return to the cold reality of hunting again.
That speech at John's grave was depressing and heartbreaking, and it really brought out Dean's feelings about hunting and the life they lead in general. He holds the burden of the Winchester family, ever since childhood he had to look out for Sam, especially with this new burden and promise to his father about the Demon getting hold of Sam (*whimpers from the preview of the two-part finale*). In that "perfect" world he didn't have to worry about any of that....but he knew, despite loving the feeling of being normal, that in the actual reality Sam was still in danger. He had an obligation, even if he didn't like what the possible outcomes might be, and he chose that over the life he never had. It was sad, because Mary was there! His reaction to her was lovely and cute and made me wibbly. He wants his mommy back. :(
His love for Sam was also adorable, they may not get along at times but they do have things in common and they are still brothers who love each other. That's what I loved about this episode.
Okay, I'm rambling now, but this was an AWESOME episode. Gotta love Supernatural, dude. :D
