I want to play a game....

++ The murder of indigenous actor Jonathan Joss (King of the Hill, Parks and Recreation) is absolutely tragic and devastating, but even more so is the aftermath of the police outright denying that it was a hate crime despite eyewitnesses and his own husband saying so from the homophobic threats and attacks sent to them. Fortunately, in a surprising turn of events they have recently backtracked on this statement have apologized for making such a rushed conclusion without a proper formal investigation, which accountability by the police is very rare to come by. However, to be honest the pessimistic side of me knows that if this had just been a random person they wouldn't have bothered to care, but since this was someone in the entertainment industry and has been gaining a lot of public attention and outrage so quickly they had to admit fault to prevent further backlash. Regardless though, it's still horrible and I hope the murderer (who admitted to the crime, though released on bail) get severely punished and his husband and family get justice.

++ While I haven't been watching Doctor Who, hearing what happened in the latest season finale really confirmed by concerns about RTD returning as showrunner. Overall, I just feel sad for Ncuti Gatwa.

++ Blumhouse Productions acquires rights to the Saw franchise from Twisted Pictures.

Earlier it was reported that the production into Saw XI, which was supposed to have been released later in the year, was halted due to inter-conflict between creators about the future of the franchise, leaving an indefinite question mark. It seems that this was the reason and result of whatever behind-the-scenes disagreements and negotiations were happening. The series is now back under James Wan, as well. Whether or not he'll be directing is unknown, but he'll no doubt be part of the creative process. Although reports claim that there's no movie in production yet, I highly suspect that whatever was planned for Saw XI will resume shortly. I do want it to be a continuation from Saw X since while it did conclude nicely, there were a few loose ends that can be explored, but if nothing else having Tobin Bell continue to reprise his role will always be a treat. Plus, I would love for there to be movies similar to that of Spiral, where John Kramer isn't directly involved but is still a huge influence to other characters and events.

Fangs of Fortune )

The Next Prince )

Pit Babe )

I've also been quite curious about My Golden Blood, a Thai BL vampire drama, just based on what I've seen that's come across my Tumblr dash I'm intrigued and, of course, vampirism is quite sexy.

We hear the Wilderness, and It hears us.

++ Yellowjackets has been renewed for a fourth season. \O/

++ Craig Mazin confirms that The Last Of Us will be a four-season plan. I remember him bringing this up some months ago, but it's good to get further confirmation especially since the show was renewed for season three already. And it makes sense, because the second game is quite long with so much happening that it would be impossible to wrap everything up in just a short amount of time.

With that being said, it makes me wish even more for 22-episode seasons again. When you look at the way these streaming platforms have shortened the number of episodes per season for shows, it's honestly not enough. You can literally combine at least two or three of those seasons would actually be considered one full-length season of what shows used to be, and that's kinda sad. While not every show needs 22+ episodes a season, a lot of them could really benefit from it, and I cannot help but wonder how the above shows would be like if they had gotten the full-length season treatment that I believe they should've gotten.

Fanvid Friday: Mu Siyang/Ji Jingwu (Prince of Tennis)

The Imperial Pair )

My Comments: Those familiar with Prince of Tennis, from the Japanese manga to its various adaptations, will be aware of this particular pairing known as the Imperial Pair, and the Chinese adaptation (titled Prince of Tennis: Match! Tennis Juniors) is no exception in continuing showing their captivating chemistry and dynamic with one another. Mu Siyang and Ji Jingwu (the counterparts of the manga series' Atobe Keigo and Tezuka Kunimitsu) are rival captains of their respective teams, and have quite a history. This fanvid, one of the few that I found and can properly embed to share, is a general overview of their scenes and moments throughout the drama. One of the most notable aspect of their whole relationship is that while Ji Jingwu comes from wealth and has an arrogance to him, he views Mu Siyang as his only worthy opponent and deeply respects him, and worries over him when injured to the point where he makes personal accommodations to help him heal by flying him out to Germany for surgery.

One of my favorite scenes is when Ji Jingwu is checking up on Mu Siyang and apologizes for the match that resulted in him further injuring himself, even though it had been Mu Siyang who stubbornly wanted to continue despite knowing his limitations and ignoring all the warning signs, and the promise between them for a fair match once Mu Siyang has fully recovered.

Additionally, I want to share this Mu Siyang/Ji Jingwu fic: worship by [archiveofourown.org profile] sarahyyy, it's short but sweet and it features one of my favorite elements of what I enjoy about this pairing being Ji Jingwu's concern over Mu Siyang's well-being (canonical) and his praise kink (headcanon).

"My greatest weakness? Occasionally, I give a damn."

++ It has been confirmed that Krysten Ritter is returning as Jessica Jones in Daredevil: Born Again season two. Ever since she voiced her interest in returning I knew there would be a high possibility of it happening, and now it's finally arrived! I'm curious to see what they do, but I know that the Jessica and Matt dynamic is going to be amazing regardless. They were the highlight of The Defenders for me, so seeing them together again is going to be an utter delight. All they need to do is get Elodie Yung back as Elektra, since has has also expressed her wishes of returning in the role as well, and that would be icing on the cake for me.

++ HBO Max has changed its name back after two years of a brief rebranding. This is such a frivolous thing, but I just find it funny since the renaming was so pointless.

++ As someone who watches a lot of YouTube, I've become quite disillusioned by a lot of individual YouTubers over the years. For various reasons, the obvious being the push of the algorithm and the strive for monetization instead of just the passion of creating or talking about something they wanted to share which has ruined a lot of people who I initially used to like watching and seeing that shift has, either soured me to them or left me feeling indifferent and just no longer engaging. Between that and people just making long form videos (ex: the video essay bandwagon) to say a whole lot of nothing (literally an example of "this could've been an email" vibe, just link the wikipedia article you're directly reading from and STFU) I just have very little patience for things that waste my time in such a way. I get wanting to make money, I get that the platform has forced this on creatives who just want to do their own thing, but as I mentioned previously regarding true crime there are a lot of grifters and even sadly people who turn into grifters (anything involving drama or supposed drama, exaggerating or poorly representing a situation just for clicks and views) and it makes it difficult to find anything genuine or authentic and, while it is important to do so, it can be tiring to constantly question the motivations of why someone is making a video about a topic.

I know that YouTube has always had this side to it even in the early days, but with the way everything is online nowadays it can be quite disheartening seeing it so much more. It's why I've become so selective of who I choose to watch more frequently of.

TV, movies, and books (oh my).

++ Pit Babe S2 full trailer just dropped! So much is going on, but I'm ready.

++ We also have the official trailer for The Next Prince, a Thai BL drama. After seeing the small teaser for this a little while ago it quickly was among my list of anticipated BLs and I didn't know when it would be coming out, and now we not only have a full trailer but also a premiere date of May 3rd. And the trailer itself looks amazing. The outfits, the production value, and already I'm intrigued by the story. I do love a good body guard/royalty love story and this has that plus whatever royal politics are going to be featured.

++ In other news, it seems that the Oscars are changing some rules which includes a requirement that all Academy members must watch all of the nominated films before voting. How this wasn't an already implemented rule from the start I have no idea, but it does further confirm what I think most of us already knew. Just based on what I've seen over the years, most Academy members don't like watching films. Many have outright admitted they don't care, only watch the movies that they see are popular and ignore the rest, or don't watch a movie in its entirety before turning it off. Even worse when it's animation or anything foreign or obscure which most will claim they're not worth seeing. Again, not surprising but it's disappointing all the same since this really skews the votes and robs films that are deserving of such recognition. Of course how this new rule is going to be enforced, I don't know.

The bad news of this rule change is that now films made by AI can still be eligible for nominations and can potentially win despite controversy surrounding it. Further demonstrating how this ceremony continues to be a farce. Boo. :/

++ GRRM admits that "The Winds Of Winter" is "the curse of his life".

Now, I don't particularly care for anything related to ASOIAF anymore, but I just find it so funny (both in an amusing and in a sad way) with how things turned out with this series. What was supposed to have been just a planned book trilogy became an extended book series that he regrettably wrote himself into a corner with. I also have my suspicions that upon seeing the reactions to how the Game of Thrones show ended he became less and less motivated to finish the books. On one hand, I don't believe in pressuring writers to finish things that aren't ready, however for over a decade he has promised and posted excerpts without actually delivering, meanwhile working and releasing other projects during this time. It's really telling in that sense, to be honest. While I do think The Winds of Winter might be finished and released at some point in the (distant) future, I don't think A Dream Of Spring, the final book, is ever going to be written. I think fans of the books have long accepted that they will most likely never get a conclusion to the series.

Fanvid Friday: Hai Yunfan/Wang Lu (Once Upon A Time In Lingjian Mountain)

Hai Yunfan and Wang Lu. )

My Comments: One of the enjoyable aspects of Once Upon A Time In Lingjian Mountain, a silly and ridiculous cdrama, is the dynamic between Wang Lu and Hai Yunfan, their whole relationship is one built from a sworn brother element but it's played a lot like a bromance with a lot of winks and nudges. It's adorable with a lot of ridiculous moments, as with the comedic nature of the drama itself, but it's also heartfelt as well with the companionship between them. These two fanvids are ones I discovered and liked the presentation of, with the accompanying songs to match the tone and vibe going for this relationship. The second fanvid requires captions to be turned on for the dialogue featured.

I want it to be cooler weather again....

++ One of the things I hate about warm weather is how irritable it makes me. I was just reminded of this yesterday when I basically had a little freakout over nothing, and it was a combination of other things happening but the warm air didn't help matters which escalated the way I was feeling. :/

++ The Last Of Us was renewed for a third season ahead of the season two premiere. Well, obviously. I would sure hope so. We knew months ago that the second game was going to be split into two (or possible more?) seasons, and it would be foolish to just not renew something that is basically going to be incomplete as a story itself. It reminds me of the situation with Dune with them splitting it into two movies even though the second one wasn't filmed yet after the first was released, a decision of studios and whatever else creatives have that I still don't understand. Regardless, it's just good that there's further confirmation with TLOU.

++ NaNoWriMo is officially shutting down for good. This has been a long time coming considering the numerous controversies and scandals over the years, with their whole ordeal surrounding genAI being the final nail in the coffin.

Funnily, it took until quite recently to realize that NaNoWriMo was an actual non-profit organization. I had long thought that it was simply just a self-induced prompt that writers challenged themselves and promoted it annually to write and complete a story in a month. It wasn't until some of the issues that arose not too long ago was being spread around that I finally understood, lol. I'm hoping that this doesn't discourage people from continuing challenging themselves with their writing, since I know a lot got their starts and were pushed to finish their projects because of NaNoWriMo. They can just continue on without the organization.

On this fine Saturday evening.

++ Pit Babe season 2 trailer has emerged. I have no idea what's going on or what's going to happen get that man pregnant by the end I swear, but I'm excited nonetheless. Race Car Omegaverse 2: Electric Boogaloo, here we go!

++ Automattic, the company that owns Wordpress and Tumblr, laid off 16% of its employees recently. It explains the lack of any April Fool's shenanigans that often appears. Considering that it was already stated that Tumblr itself was run on a skeleton crew for some time, this has led to many people wondering and fretting (for the umpteenth time) about the fate of the site itself. Although I do think some of the worry is mere fearmongering it's definitely something to be prepared for, considering the state of most online spaces and how corrupt companies can ruin something good. We've seen this happen before, so the concern is very real. At the moment there are posts going around about how to back up accounts and to tell others where they may be migrating to as a precaution, which is a good idea anyway regardless of what happens.

I've been tempted on telling people to just come to DreamWidth, although I don't think anyone aside from Fandom Olds will have an interest in a journaling site, and unfortunately I don't think there is an equivalent to Tumblr anywhere. While the sentiment is "never say never", I am just not interested at all in joining Bluesky or Discord or any kind of social media platform like those.

Fanvid Friday: Yellowjackets

I think shit is gonna get a lot worse out here. )

My Comments: Continuing on with my current interest with Yellowjackets, this is a fanvid that I came across that absolutely floored me. Not only does it feature a very haunting song by Paris Paloma, the pacing of the editing matching the music is so mesmerizing. I also liked the way the vidder structured the video by giving the events that happened in the wilderness (at least what was presented in the first two seasons, so spoilers for at least some character deaths) to tell the story of their survival. It's such a wonderfully crafted fanvid.

Fanvid Friday: Lottie Matthews (Yellowjackets)

Let the darkness set us free. )

My Comments: While I haven't watched Yellowjackets yet, that hasn't stopped me from looking at fanworks from the show including fanvids. This one is dedicated entirely to Lottie Matthews, mainly during the teen timeline of the first season. Lottie is the character that I grew attached to based on what I've been seeing. Her arc is just so fascinating to me and I'm immediately drawn to her, and this fanvid, set to Halsey's "Castle", is beautifully edited to show her journey and transformation in the first season alone.

Trapped in the Wilderness and in the Workplace.

There are currently two shows that, while I haven't watched, have been interested in for some time thanks to the exposure through fandom.

Yellowjackets intrigues me because the basic premise is interesting, but only the 1996 timeline with the teen girls being stranded in the wilderness. Although fans differ on their opinions of the direction the show has taken now in its third season, I really like the idea of the exploration of not just having to adapt to the harsh conditions of nature, but also the psychological effects of isolation, going on pure survival instinct almost primal in a way, and the absolute horror of doing things one normally wouldn't do to endure and survive. Of course the show has more elements to it than just that, though I have a feeling that once I do start watching the show eventually that it'll be different than the version I've created for it in my mind since I've based most of it from the complied clips and fan discussions/theories I've seen and the like.

Severance, a science fiction psychological thriller, only caught my attention recently. I saw rumblings about it during its first season, was mildly curious about the visuals, and then the second season premiered and everything I've been seeing from fandom has got me very fascinated. As someone who enjoys a good bizarre mindfuck of this particular genre, this is very much right up my alley. Because Dichen Lachman is in the show, some have called it an alternate or expanded version of Dollhouse, which I can actually see and it's probably why it has captured my interest the way it has.

Both shows captured my interest in different ways, and I'll probably get around to properly watching them at some point eventually. For now I'll just be getting my information through fandom osmosis, from the liveblogging and fan theories and discussions.

Bon voyage.

++ The announcement that three of the seven members of Dreamcatcher will not be renewing their contracts with the company has left me with conflicted feelings of devastation. While it's technically not a disbandment because they will still be continuing with the activities with the group, as stated in the message, there is still a level of uncertainty about their future as a group overall.

My thoughts and feelings, as a fan. )

At the end of the day, this is their decision for what is best for them and I respect it. And knowing that there are still kpop groups who are technically still active but haven't released anything together in a while (ex: Mamamoo) and some that were disbanded but have reunited after many years (ex: 2NE1, Baby V.O.X), anything can be possible. Dreamcatcher has defied the odds before, so I'm holding onto the hope that this will be beneficial for the group in the future.

++ On a more upbeat note, we have another trailer for The Last Of Us season two. I'm so excited! I legit got chills watching it. This is, by far, my highly anticipated show of this year. Love the games, loved the first season and I cannot wait to see how they do the (first half) of the second game for season two. I also discovered Pedro and Bella's reaction to the trailer at the SXSW panel, and the emotional reaction from Pedro at the end was so touching.

++ Additionally, every time I read that a show has split something into two seasons I keep on thinking that it's of the 13-22 episode seasons rather than the current 6-8 episode seasons, which throws me off. It's also annoying, because it's like well why not just have it all be in one season? IDK.

Fanvid Friday: Fangs Of Fortune

Remember. This is my choice, not yours. You don't have to bear any blame or guilt. )

My Comments: The cdrama Fangs of Fortune is quite a visual spectacle, and while I have been slowly making my way through the drama myself that hasn't stopped me from looking at all the pretty fanwork that fandom has provided, including fanvids. Although a lot tend to be more fitted towards the TikTok-esque shortform edits, there are a few that I found that are longer form fanvids which is more to my personal preference. The first one is a generic one that shows the beauty of the drama itself, it's gorgeously haunting and epic with the chosen music and scenes to match. The second fanvid is solely focused on Zhuo Yichen and Zhao Yuanzhou, and only goes up to the fourteen episode. Both are very well-done vids.

"You're extraordinary."

++ R.I.P. Michelle Trachtenberg. :(

This came as quite a shock to read, it took several rereads of the headline before it sunk in. She was so young, around my age. I grew up with a lot of Michelle's work, from Harriet the Spy to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gossip Girl, and some other things she made an appearance in here and there. Admittedly I hadn't been following her lately so I had no idea she had been unwell, and while nothing has been confirmed yet it does seem like it was probably due to recovery complications from getting a liver transplant recently, most likely adding to whatever issues she was having with her health. May she rest in peace.

++ Joann, the fabric and crafts store, is permanently going out of business and closing all stores.

I haven't been in there for some time, however I am very familiar with it since growing up I frequently went with my mom to various local fabric stores and Joann was one of those places. It's honestly sad, not just for the employees who are losing their jobs and for the customers who relied on the store for their fabrics and other craft needs, but I just think about all these long time businesses that have been closing in recent years. I feel like we keep seeing news reports of things filing for bankruptcy and then closing, either most locations or just going out of business completely. I know that it's normal with the economy we live in, not everything lasts forever, but it's still unfortunate all the same. Obviously, for those who are able to definitely support your small local businesses if you can. Also, fuck Hobby Lobby.

++ After some rumors, it has been officially confirmed by John Lithgow himself that he will be playing Albus Dumbledore in the HBO Harry Potter television series.

Now, I have absolutely no desire to watch this series for numerous reasons, but I find this casting to be deeply amusing. Mostly because I mainly know him as Dick Solomon from 3rd Rock from the Sun and upon reading this confirmation my immediate reaction was seeing Dick going, "Oh my God! I'm gorgeous!" (among the many hilarious moments of his character in that show, which is very underrated imho). Secondly, it's funny because he's American. I always thought that JKR was very strict on having an all-British casting call for any adaptation. It's just amusing, really. Either way, he's a good actor and seems confident and determined that this will be his last role of his career so, best of luck to him.

++ It has been confirmed that Justice in the Dark (renamed to Kouen) will be airing all 30 episodes on March 7th in Japan. Some were speculating this to be the case, but it's still nice to see confirmation. This is exciting news for fans of the novel and of the drama when it first dropped before it was yanked away due to censorship, and thankfully having it being picked up for a Japanese release to air the drama in its entirety is such miracle and a relief. I know that this most likely had some kind of luck in terms of broadcasting rights, whatever the case may be this is a blessing.

January is like a whole year in a single month.

++ Just days after marriage equality was taken into effect, Thailand makes hormone therapy free for trans people. ❤

++ Most recent BL news is that Justice in the Dark is going to get a Japanese release. The cdrama, adapted from the danmei Mo Du by Priest, originally broadcasted the first handful of episodes before it was abruptly taken down completely, therefore never finished airing. Not even a leak like with what happened with The Spirealm. I'm hoping that this means all the episodes are going to be released and not just those eight that already aired before being taken away. Also, perhaps this is my optimism speaking, but this does give me hope that other danmei adapted cdramas that have been shelved will come to the light (please, please, I need Immortality, Eternal Faith, and Winner is King!)

++ It appears that The Expanse's first three seasons might be leaving Amazon Prime, as those were the first seasons done by Syfy before Amazon took over. There's a bit confusion on what this means, and one of the co-authors of the book series is looking into the situation and will provide updates as soon as possible on what is going on. Thankfully, you can get the first three seasons on DVD/Bluray, which is why I keep reiterating the importance of physical media. Streaming isn't going to be around forever, and whatever licensing contracts like this occur it's always a fight between who owns the rights to what.

The Devil of Hell's Kitchen.

++ Daredevil: Born Again official trailer. The gangs all there, and thankfully the trailer showcases how brutal and violent it is, which is something I think many feared would have changed once Disney got a hold of it. But we have been reassured by Charlie Cox that it's not only a continuation of the Netflix series it's also going to be more violent than before, and this trailer proves it. I'm still holding reservations until we see the final product once it drops (as I am repeating the mantra of "please be good, please be good"), but so far yeah. I'm in. Now where is my girl Elektra....

Happy New Year!

2025 is upon us. Let us hope that despite current events that we will make the most of it, the best we can, for ourselves and those around us.

++ I will be partaking in this year's [community profile] snowflake_challenge. I'll just wait a bit before at least a good portion of the prompts are available.

++ Learning that that apparently Netflix tells writers to have character announce what they're doing in order for people who aren't actively watch the television to follow along is just one of the many issues with a lot of Netflix-produced shows and movies. Reading the linked article really gives perspective of how fucked the Netflix streaming model is with its produced programing, and it goes beyond just the "tell, don't show" strategy. I've seen others say that streaming has become a "content farm", and it's true. It's less about creative storytelling and more about producing more or less and discarding it immediately to move onto the next thing. Over the years it's become clear that the current streaming model isn't sustainable at least when it comes to the creative freedom of telling stories and being innovative, and this just further confirms it.

++ I became aware of Guardians of the Dafeng because of some gifsets featuring a very silly and fluffy Wang Hedi, and knowing that not only is it a comedy but it's also a transmigration story, it makes so much sense given the limited information and context I got from those gifsets. I don't know if I'll be watching necessarily, but at least he's having the time of his life and I'm here for it.

(Also yes, I have entertained the thought of there being a crossover with Love Game in Eastern Fantasy, since both have modern day transmigrators it would be hilarious to see Ling Miaomiao and Xu Qi'an interact and the shenanigans that would follow.)

'Tis the season.

++ I love the holiday season. And yet somehow, this year I'm feeling rather....down? I don't know. I don't usually get seasonal depression, though I have been wondering if this could be it in some way.

++ "My Christmas Sweet Love" by Dreamcatcher is not only a good uplifting song, it's also so them and the special clip music video they did for it is absolutely adorable.

++ Critical Role released a surprise a Christmas album, which coincides with their campaigns and the world of Exandria and the celebrating of Winter's Crest. It's truly really good! I shouldn't be surprised, the majority of the cast are good singers, but the thought they put into this little album is outstanding.

++ Krysten Ritter has expressed that she would love to reprise her role as Jessica Jones. Although the series hasn't premiered yet, everything we've been hearing about Daredevil: Born Again, from the revamping of what it was originally supposed to be to Charlie Cox reassuring fans that it is a continuation of the Netflix series as well as it'll be even darker than before, it gives me some kind of hope. I'm very wary of Disney/MCU stuff in general and I'll forever be bitter about the Netflix versus Disney ownership of the IP that cancelled their Netflix lineup, however if Daredevil: Born Again actually succeeds in all these things that are being promised so far then I would love for Jessica Jones to make her return. I miss her character so much. Krysten Ritter was perfection in the role, she was practically made for it.
