With the good, there has to be the bad.
So, I heard that Syfy canceled Stargate Universe recently. I admit I didn't watch the show and had heard certain...things about it from others that prompted me to not really bother with it, including that one bullshit wankery that happened with one of the creators of the show, but I know some people did watch and enjoyed it so believe me, I understand that hearing a show you've been watching has been abruptly canceled is a crushing and devastating feeling. Hell, even the actors discovered this news via Twitter, not even an official announcement or anything. It makes matters more lower than low because of it. :( First with Caprica and now with Stargate Universe, this has gotten me thinking and wondering: has the Syfy Network turned into the new FOX?
Both shows were continuations of their most successful franchises, and the network even stated that they were behind them because of that, and yet they pull shitty stunts like this. I had gotten the impression that Syfy was different in that they cared more about fan reactions than they did ratings, or at least not set high expectations for ratings like other networks do. It seems like I had been deluding myself. I know its the nature of the business, but it seems rather shady to me. Canceling two extensions of particular franchises is not the greatest way of making good with their viewers, just saying.
At least certain shows like Eureka, Warehouse 13 and Haven have been in good graces. Let's just hope it remains that way. Still, I'm not entirely pleased with the Syfy Network these days because of their shitty operations, since they're replacing these canceled shows with motherfucking wrestling. Like, whut? :/
On top of that there's also been certain wanking and anger-filled drama happening in certain communities I'm associated with, some in particular have resulted into victim-blaming and shaming of women and those people not even acknowledging or understanding the offensiveness of their comments. Or if they do, they justify it with an "oh I'm just stating my opinion" excuse and failing to have any kind of empathy whatsoever. It's despicable and disgusting and just, ugh. STOP IT WORLD, JUST STOP.

It makes me wonder since Haven was a new show that premiered during the summer, a show that I love, and it didn't have incredibly high ratings but they renewed that for a second season. But they also didn't treat it like crap either. So it makes me so wary about the sketchiness the network pulls with their decision-making.

Basically co-creator Brad Wright blamed SGA fans for "punishing" SGU by giving it low ratings (http://www.scifinow.co.uk/news/opinion-atlantis-fans-need-to-stop-punishing-universe/), or whatever else he used as an excuse. Such a dick move. :/
With the combination of crappy Syfy original movies and continuous wrestling (like seriously, how is wrestling even worthy of being on a SCIENCE FICTION NETWORK! like I get it's all choreographed fictional storylines and whatnot with their fighting and "confrontations" or whatever, but seriously, wtf?) you'd think they would at least keep something on their network. I miss the days when they actually had worthwhile programs that had something of substance. There's still Warehouse 13 and Eureka and Haven, thank goodness, but it keeps me wary on how they plan on keeping their viewers when you're constantly worried about them canceling your favorite show at any moment.
Also, definitely watch Caprica. Cannot stress enough because it is so worth it, imo. ;)

I can't wait to see the bullshit they say this time about the cancellation.

I'm head over heels in love the Cas and I am digging the SPN fandom right now (Late start, I know) so I really don't care what Brad has to say. I'm just tired of the fans being blamed for a crappy show. When a good show is canned, that sucks. When a show that is sub-par gets canned, you can't blame the fans- or you shouldn't blame the fans. Funny how it's never their fault.

Exactly. I never understood this kind of "placing the blame" game that happens towards the fans. It's like these people think they're hot shit and their projects are awesome and anyone that disagrees it's like, totally their fault if their project goes down the drain. It's like with Heroes's creator Tim Kring insulting fans that one time, and while he apologized for it the damage had already been done. There's nothing more damaging to a show's reputation than an egotistical showrunner. -___-
NEVER EVER BLAME OR INSULT THE FANS. THAT IS A HUGE NO-NO.

Syfy is seriously steadily going down the drain ): And if they're going to be showing wrestling, I want some seriously tricked out sci-fi wrestling shit okay, with like anti-grav and stuff. Honestly. BONNIE HAMMER WHATCHU DOING. I fear for Blood&Chrome next. ):

They should have kept it either as a webseries like they planned or a telemovie, and kept Caprica on the air. Seriously, it's that simple. And yet. :/

Then again, I know people think Sanctuary is crap and I still love it, so, you know.

I can understand that on a certain level, though sometimes it's about building an entirely new audience. Which with Caprica is precisely what they wanted to do from the start, stating that it was something entirely new and it had gained both old fans and newcomers to the fanbase. However in the case with that they hardly had any chance on proving themselves because they were canceled midway through the first season, after being preempted so many times and after almost a year hiatus of the mid-season finale. The network just seemed to not care from the start despite the claims that they did. Had the first season remained on a steady run without the postponing and shifting it's air dates, it would have done well enough to get at least one more season.
With SGU though it had a tough time adjusting because it had gotten a bad rep even before it had premiered; the different look, the different tone (very BSG-ish, unlike the previous Stargates) the criticism weighed in. It definitely had to live up to its predecessors and it wasn't flying with many people.
Some shows gain their full potential nearly midway, and networks kill them before they reach that mark. I understand it's part of the business and this is why shows have to stay afloat from the start, but it's just fundamentally unfair when worthwhile shows get killed off when there's so much potential and great opportunities that, had they held on a little longer, it would have been fantastic. You know?

It doesn't make the next prequel series, Blood and Chrome, to likely succeed.

So true. I'll be surprised if Blood and Chrome gets a full season.

Unless it's crazy SyFy wrestling, that crap needs to move to another channel lol.

It's such a shame because it used to be better but now it's just awful!

shrugs* I'm gtting used to shows that I like getting cancelled. Supernatural and The Big bang Theory are about the only two shows I love recently that have gone past a season or two. Hmm ok Fringe got as third season I guess there could be others as well, but so many shows only get one season lately to try and prove themselves, too often that is just not enough time. Too many new shows and not enough of them getting a chance, it sucks.

However it is concerning that its the second show syfy has cancelled recently from franchises that have been very sucessful in the past.
That's definitely my main concern, as well. There's no sense of security anymore despite what the network says, they always end up canning their best franchises until there's nothing left. It's confusing and frustrating, and it makes me lose faith in the network overall. And that's sad, because I never had much problem with Syfy other than their love for longass hiatuses. Nowadays they are definitely becoming the baby version of FOX and that's not good. :/
I'd rather not have my favorite shows getting canceled, though it seems to be a trend, doesn't it? :(

Syfy definitely is turning more into FOX and it's depressing, because I had thought Syfy was bigger than that. Better, and not like other networks that only care about the numbers. It was my impression that Syfy usually cared about the dedicated fanbases a little more than the ratings; I mean, certain shows hardly ranked high on the ratings scale yet kept going because of the fanbases. I just, I don't understand this shift at all.

YOU ICON'D MY DRAWING! THAT IS TOO AWESOME, I FEEL SO HONORED. ♥ Seriously, I could do a bit better, since it was smaller than how I normally do them (what can I say I am judgmental with my own work, lol) but still OMG!!!! *draws hearts around you*
So happy that you got the card (on time! yay!) You really do keep me sane, and I love for you it, bb. ♥ ♥ ♥
