Somehow I've turned into an insomniac...

++ So I went to see the new Nightmare on Elm Street movie, it was a rather....interesting rendition of the story? I think the trailer made it seem a bit more amazing than it was, to be honest. There were a lot of things that felt off about it.

First of all keep in mind that while I'm a huge fan of the original NOES movies I went into the theater with an open-mind knowing that this was going to be a re-imagining of the story based off of what Wes Craven had created, and I did. And it was a re-imagined version because there was much that was changed from the original story. First of all, the huge factor was Freddy Kreuger being a child molester rather than a child murderer as he was originally portrayed as; I mean sure, in the original series there was some implications of possible child molestation, but that was only in the background. Here it was a huge plot point. There wasn't the trademark house, but a preschool where the incidents happened. The children on Elm Street were all children he violated during their preschool years, which is where the huge differences from the original come into the picture, and that is how all of them are connected and why Freddy is attacking them because they "told the truth" or whatever. Of course one of my gripes is that unlike the original we didn't get a clear picture of who these kids were, they didn't interact with each other and mostly we spent on one character at a time and rarely of them together, aside from the last surviving two. Which, I preferred the original Nancy better. Like, this one was good, but Heather Langenkamp's Nancy was way more relateable and she actually was resourceful, she had planned on taking down Freddy by herself through her own devices and it wasn't because she was a previous victim of his, either.

Overall, it was just a mess. It was like they were trying to take the fantastical horror aspect from the originals and place some realism into it, and of course the only way to do that is by adding in molestation which doesn't fit in at all with the mythology at hand. They didn't explain anything other than that, and it's just, I don't know. It felt wrong and off and all over the place. I mean come on, the mystery in itself wasn't that hard to figure out so it dragged the movie so much for them to "discover" what really happened to them.

At least I enjoyed most of the cast, at least. Katie Cassidy is gorgeous as ever (also am I the only one making SPN parallels with "Dean" and "Rufus"? lol), Thomas Dekker, Kyle Gallner, Clancy Brown (!!), Connie Britton (Mrs. Coach Taylor!), Jackie Earle Haley, so yeah, I think I mainly went to see these actors for sure, and they managed to salvage parts of it, but unfortunately not even they could redeem the story, or such a nonexistent one anyway.

So yeah, those are my thoughts. I did go in without much expectations, I knew it wasn't going to be like the original and I was hoping that it would have something interesting, but the storytelling was bland and unoriginal since there was too much drawing of similar scenes from the original that didn't make sense. So yeah, I was majorly unimpressed. Shorthand version: the trailer is much more exciting than the actual film, because it painted itself to look like it had something worthwhile going. Unfortunately, it seems like the director is getting butthurt and saying those that disliked it need to "get a life". :/ Way to stay classy, dude.

++ Speaking of the NOES franchise, does anyone remember the television series Freddy's Nightmares? Richard Speight Jr. made an appearance twice on the show, and OMG LOOKIT THE ADORABLENESS OF HIM! WITH HIS FLUFFY 80s HAIR AND THE EARRING! Apparently he was only 19 when he filmed this, which makes it even cuter to see. Just, as;dlfjalsdf d'awww. ♥ I swear, next time I see Richard I'm gonna comment about this because it's too good to pass up. Heee.

++ I just watched the new Christina Aguilera video and....I am not impressed, sorry to say. I don't know. I love her singing, she has fantastic vocal range but her image has always bugged me for some reason. It's like she's trying too hard to fit into the current trend in music instead of just being herself. She changed even her vocals to fit into that which is what bugs me the most, I think. Because I'm like "that's not Christina" and I'm not sure if that's the point, but I'm just not impressed at all by it. I mean I was waiting for a comeback, this just wasn't what I was expecting.

++ For the last couple of days I have been going through [livejournal.com profile] ontd_spnparty (which I avoided for some time because I thought they posted uncut spoilers which they don't) mainly for gifs/macros and teh funny, and I also spent hours raiding Tumblr, along with being with my beloved [livejournal.com profile] mishaland peeps. WHY ARE THESE PLACES SO ADDICTIVE?! IDEK YOU GUYS, SRSLY, FANDOM IS TAKING OVER MY LIFE. IT IS MAKING ME AN INSOMNIAC AND THAT ISN'T GOOD, BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW TO QUIT YOU FANDOM!

++ New wank is hilarious and facepalm worthy, but mostly hilarious. I don't know the author nor have I read her series, but lady seems to be new to fandom, or the Internet in general, lol.

I can't watch that stuff. I'm a BIG scardy cat.

Look at bb Richard! I really do hope he comes back on the show....or maybe he and Misha can have their own show. I'm rambling!

I LOVE ONTD_SPNPARTY SO MUCH!!!!!

Wank always brings the lulz!

I figured some people won't go near anything scary, but since I'm a huge fan of the NOES series and its franchise I needed to see for myself how the new movie tried to recreate the story for the new "generation", so to speak. It just wasn't that great, or even that scary, but mostly that's because I'm like a big horror fan so it takes more than a few minor jumps and scares to really get my shaking, which this didn't so. *shrugs*

ISN'T HE A CUTIE? OMG *squishes him* And please! Ramble away! I would love Richard and Misha to have their own show together, a spin-off with their characters even. I don't care. More of them the better, I say. I MISS YOU GABRIEL, COME BACK TO US BB!

I used to watch Freddy's Nightmares. Gave me nightmares when I was a kid but it was so morbidly fascinating to watch.

RICHARD'S EARRING. AND HAIR. SO ADOOORABLE.

To be honest, I found her comparisons of fanfic writers to rapists and stalkers insulting. I also think she's been living under a rock from the way she talks about fanfics/fandom.

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't aware there was a television series until several years ago, and I was like "really what?" but it really shows how popular the NOES franchise was back then and how iconic Freddy was.

RICHARD!!!! I JUST WANNA SMISH HIM, HE LOOKS TOO CUTE. :DDD

Her ignorance is indeed very insulting. It's clear she has no knowledge about fandom, which makes her generalizations and accusations even worse when she's saying these things about something she doesn't have any understanding about.

I was hoping that maybe, just maybe, this could be a decent re-imagining remake or something. But then again, remaking anything of the classics hardly goes well with me so, heh. I don't know. The trailer made it seem like it was going to be good, but that's just false advertising to make people see it. idk

I am so out of the loop for SPN fandom.

Lookit Richard! SO CUTE D'AWWWWW!

How are you? ♥

ISN'T HE JUST A DARLING? HE'S SUCH A BABY OMG, I WANNA SQUISH HIM.

I'm doing alright bb, how about you? :)

I have never watched any of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, crazy lol.

The last time I listened to a Christina interview she sounded fake and arrogant while being "scandalous" when she was going through her 'dirty' faze. That said, I loved her music from that time.

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so obsessed with the movies, I have all of them in the DVD collectors boxset. ;D

I think that's the main reason why I'm not all over Christina like some people are. She has a fantastic voice there's no denying that and I do love her music here and there, but there's something about the way she presents herself that seems too fakey-fakey for me. And her new song yeah, not feeling it. It doesn't even sound like her. It's like she's trying to rise up against other musical artists on their level instead of finding her own.

[identity profile] icecoldrain.livejournal.com 2010-05-05 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
lol, I'm like the only one who has never gotten around to watching any of them.

She has an amazing voice, but I haven't liked any of her music since her stripped CD. Interview wise, she's very fake, it's kind of sad. I mean plenty of musicians have a persona or are just fake, but she's fake and arrogant about it. Her new song wasn't that great, but the video brought on the lulz.

Oh, but clearly she is only bitter because (almost) nobody writes fic about her books, although they feature a bisexual villain, explicit m/m rape and probably healing!vagina. Or precisely because of that fact.

I happen to own the first book of the series; tried to read it four times, it's - not that good?

[identity profile] bold-seer.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
And I just have to point out that that is tried to read it four times, not tried to read it four times. (Linguist, sorry!)

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2010-05-05 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
My sister has one of her books, she hasn't read it for a long time and since this hoopla she's thinking about getting rid of it. Heh.

[identity profile] cheerful-earl.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, wow. Another person who hates fanfiction. I sort of collect them in my head. I don't even know about Diana Gabaldon. That's a lot of hate. The comments, LOL. "I had never even heard of fanfiction!" "It's like listening to gossip for a grumpy old soul" and "fanfiction is nauseating." Ha.

(also am I the only one making SPN parallels with "Dean" and "Rufus"? lol)

NO! I was like, "Stop saying Dean, Ruby!" LOL

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's all sorts of ridiculous. Like okay, I don't mind if authors aren't that keen on the fanfiction front, because it's how they feel. However, it's the generalizations and the ignorance like this woman who seems to think that all fanfiction is harmful and immoral and saying as such in a brash manner. Oh, and I love the comments about fanfiction authors just getting out there and writing our own material instead of "stealing", it's like the entire notion of writing for fun doesn't even register to them. Heh.

LOL GLAD I WASN'T THE ONLY ONE! XD By the way, what did you think of the film?

[identity profile] cheerful-earl.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I think she just does not get it. Which, I guess I can understand, if she's new to any sort of fandom but her own, but she's so negative, so derogatory about it. Like you said, it's how she feels and that's okay, but does she have to be so brash? At least open up a dialogue, try to understand. And her rules about what's allowed are weird- if a publishing company says it's okay, then MORALLY it's okay? If fanfiction is immoral, how come Kevin J. Anderson writing novels about Krypton is okay because DC Comics says it is? I wonder what she'd have to say about Vergil and the Aeneid, a classic epic- because it's totally Homer fanfiction. Heh.

I also love that she doesn't even stop to consider the fact that some fanfiction might be *good*. She's like, "It's all badfic! It's all porn!" I've read fanfic just as good as published fiction- better!

Re: ANOES. It's been years since I've seen the original, so I didn't have a strong comparison to go with, which probably helped my enjoyment of it. The mythology of it was a mess, as you said, since they explained nothing. I thought the Freddy-as-a-molester thing worked better metaphorically than it did literally (I mean, an abuser chasing his victims down in their dreams, unstoppable? Pretty strong metaphor there). I hadn't really figured out what my problem was with the group of kids until I read your entry; they really didn't interact as a group, which weakened the story and weakened a lot of the impact of their deaths.

I did like the cast a lot, and I thought the visual aspect was really cool (most of the awesome parts were in the trailer, though, like Katie in the classroom). Also- I was really tired when I saw it, so I kept falling asleep both during and after when waiting for the bus in the dark alone. So there was an unitentional level of creepy, heh. Overall, I'd say I enjoyed it, but definitely see the flaws.

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, exactly. Plus, what about all the other writers and creators who don't mind their works being written in fanfiction? There are plenty of them that find it flattering of the support because it means fans like it enough to explore further, not just with the fanfiction but the fanart and fanvideos and the like. I get that it can be a personal preference thing for some people, but hers is obviously of ignorance and until she's schooled herself into what fandom/fanfiction is all about she shouldn't be making such claims and accusations towards it because it's really offensive and insulting.

I hadn't really figured out what my problem was with the group of kids until I read your entry; they really didn't interact as a group, which weakened the story and weakened a lot of the impact of their deaths.

Yeah, I was expecting more interaction with them as a group since it was implied they were all friends and that's how it was in the original, but it just seemed like we focused on one character at a time (Katie was focused on a lot in the beginning until she died which I'm like, wow how that must have felt like "oh you're character will only be in the beginning of the film") so yeah, it definitely weakened the emotional impact with them. I was also expecting more of the parents involvement since they were the ones that burned Freddy and it's about their connection too, but I don't know.

I think my problem with the film was mainly the molestation being the prime story; they tried to make the molester = monster into a literal statement that it just ruined the viewing for me, I think. It's a great notion in theory to explore that esp with them defeating their monster and overcoming their nightmares, but it definitely works better in the metaphorical sense than outright literal. I wanted to like it, but the more I think about it the more I realize I just didn't like the story that well. The original had a better flow and better organized style of storytelling than this one did because there was more development of the characters and their involvement, not such much with a psychological backstory. Just a classic story about a nightmare creature out to get kids, and of course the main heroine using her brains to defeat said monster. I think that's what drew me into the original NOES and the rest of the sequels (sans the second one, actually, didn't really favor the second movie)

[identity profile] cheerful-earl.livejournal.com 2010-05-05 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. There are plenty of writers who are completely okay with fanfiction. She really needs to do some digging before being so accusatory, because it's very offensive to compare people who write fic to white slavers.

I was also expecting more of the parents involvement since they were the ones that burned Freddy and it's about their connection too, but I don't know.

I was expecting more about that as well. That whole thing seemed rushed, because the kids jumped from learning about it to believing they had lied, and their parents had burned an innocent man... And the parents never really had a *say*. I don't know, either. It was weird. (This is one of those movies that the more I think about it, the more holes I find, heh)

The original had a better flow and better organized style of storytelling than this one did because there was more development of the characters and their involvement, not such much with a psychological backstory.

This is part of my problem! A lot of movies/tv shows do this- they try to delve into deep psychology or metaphor, but they do it in a way that overrides the character development and the actual story of the movie. The movie should not be about some sort of psychological issue (unless that is your project), it needs to be about character and plot. If there is that psychological backstory or that metaphor, it deepens the story, but it should not *be* the story.

I really need to watch the original NOES again. Maybe I'll go rent it for tonight.

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2010-05-05 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I went skimming through the comments on her blog and my brain hurts from so much of the fail, it's ridiculous. Some of those people don't understand the definition of plagiarism and my favorite comment stems from those who say they're writers themselves that go "I am appalled by why people would do this! If they want to write, why can't they write their own characters instead of stealing someone else's!" Completely missing the point of fanfiction, dudes. And let's not forget that this author in question is writing about a Doctor Who character in her stories. Irony of the situation much? lol

I wonder what these people think about fanart or fanvids, it's the same thing as fanfiction just in a different creative format. Without these things, there would be no fan communities to share the love over such materials, even long after it's over with.

Another thing I'd like to point out in the new NOES that really bugged me was that classic scene with Freddy coming through the wall when Nancy is dreaming. TOO CGI I WAS TAKEN OUT OF THE FILM BECAUSE OF IT! Like, the original scene with that they didn't have CGI and a smaller budget to go on, but still that was more realistically done because I remember during the commentary Wes Craven talked about how they used a flexible board where they would have the Freddy face just push through, that made it so much more creepy than what happened in the newer one. So yeah, there's my gripe. I do think the more we think about it the more flaws we nitpick at. Heh.

I'm definitely whipping out my DVDs and watching them, for sure. ;)

[identity profile] noybusiness.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The insane and overly possessive comparisons of fanfic writers to stalkers and white slavers are one thing, but the fact that she partly based her lead male on Jamie from Doctor Who makes it incredibly hypocritical.

I hadn't heard of Freddy's Nightmares. You don't see many series like that now outside of reruns.

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The fact that she makes any comparisons to anything like slavery and stalkers to fanfiction is just plain ignorant and insulting and way out of line, like what the fuck are you serious woman? You have no idea what you're talking about. And yeah, it's completely hypocritical based on what I read about what she writes about that character.

I had heard about it years ago but it was definitely hard to find, I don't even think it's out for purchase (that I'm aware of). I just got around to seeing the episodes on YT.

[identity profile] noybusiness.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate it when people "it's like rape" about something that's not like rape. It's offensive to anyone that's been raped. And, never having been raped, I'm proof you don't have to have been raped to see that, you just have to think about it. So what's their excuse?

I have a strange desire to see Jensen Ackles in a show like that. All panicked and running.

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2010-05-05 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's just a horrible analogy to use.

I have a strange desire to see Jensen Ackles in a show like that. All panicked and running.

Totally. I'd like to see her given a taste of her own medicine. "You used part of Frazer Hines' own name! *Gasp* That's like, mugging him at gunpoint or something."

I was thinking more along the lines of him running from an invisible menace, but thanks, that's cool!
