Fandomosity: Jossverse (WW), BSG, Heroes, V.C. Andrews

Happy Saturday, the 3rd of February everybody. It's hard to believe that this passed week was the ending of January and the start of another month; 2007 is going to be going by quickly just as last year had. Anyway, I want to direct the attentions towards: Random Friending Meme conducted by [livejournal.com profile] onmycrew; intended to meet, greet and friend anyone with similar interests of fandoms/likes/dislikes, et cetera. Which in return, I welcome all newcomers from that meme!

-♠- Joss Got Snuffed: In case anyone hasn't already heard the news, Joss Whedon is no longer preparing for Wonder Woman, as announced from the man himself. Apparently the producers who wanted him didn't like what he had to offer, therefore cutting him loose from the project altogether. It's saddening news because I know that Joss would've done Wonder Woman justice since I have faith in his style of writing and direction, and hearing about the film production for the longest time I had high hopes this would be his ultimate break. Although it's a relief because he did have to struggle with presenting the script, and that certainly places a lot of weight on his shoulders. So I'm just glad he's free from those chains of impressing TPTB, which allows him to focus on his next upcoming project, the mysterious Goners.

-♠- Espenson Does Galactica, Again: Jane Espenson's second written episode of Battlestar Galactica is scheduled to air on February 18th, it's entitled "Dirty Hands". Visit Jane Espenson's official website for further information.

-♠- Holding Out For A Hero: Exciting news: Heroes has been renewed for a full second season! The popularity of the new NBC series is growing rapidly, winning awards and gaining the recognition it deserves. As the SCIFIWIRE article suggests, by wrapping up the first season questions will be answered, along with more questions left unanswered, leaving more speculating fans before its second season.

-♠- It's Raining VC Andrews: The Hudson series has been adapted into a film version, starring Brooklyn Sudano as Rain Hudson (watch the trailer). There has only been one other V.C. Andrews series adapted into a film version, and that was the critically acclaimed phenomenon of Flowers in the Attic back in 1986 starring Kristy Swanson and Louise Fletcher. I have mixed feelings about this newly adaptation though, because I've always considered V.C. Andrews' stories greatly dark and the trailer doesn't portray it as such; the dreams and ambitions parts were in the correct light mind you, but I guess I wanted something more from what I saw. Of course, Andrew Neiderman isn't the best candidate for faithfully portraying V.C. Andrews' stories, as his ghostwriting work post her death has dropped from the originality writing-wise, almost dumbing down on the brilliance of what Miss Andrews had written. I doubt this adaptation will conquer the book, like that's possible, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt until I view it for myself. I don't know whether it'll be theatrically released or direct-to-DVD, as that's still in the works I believe.

*waves back* How've you been? I know I haven't commented lately, but school's been occupying most of my time lately. :/

Aw. I'm sorry to hear that Joss won't be doing Wonder Woman after all. If Joss' style was different from what they wanted, and I whole hearted love and trust his style, it makes me wonder what they were going for. And if I'll even be interested in seeing the movie.

Haven't read The Hudson series, but I love the book Flowers in the Attic. I never did get to see the movie, though.

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2007-02-04 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
It makes me wonder what they were aiming for, too. Originally I thought they wanted Joss because they knew his formulated style and wanted some of his influence. But I guess his ideas weren't good enough for them, which is a shame. I wanted to see the movie due to Joss and was curious on his take of the Wonder Woman story. But then again, I'm biased.

The movie for FitA had mixed reviews, since they changed some bits, including the ending. Though in my personal opinion, while it may not be a perfect adaptation I loved the atmosphere used for the movie, particularly the musical score which set the mood perfectly.

I hadn't heard that about Joss yet. It's a shame as I too think he could have really done something with it.

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2007-02-04 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
He really could've, and I'm disappointed that the producers didn't like what he brought to the table. Ah well, it's their loss right?

i didnt watch the trailer- plugin issues. but its gotta be worth seeing..i think the rain books might have been the last ones i read from vc. I wish the would have done the whole Flowers... series :( and when i read them all *went throught a 4month reading vc book spree* i thought the ones with Heaven would have been a good choice for a movie

Re: vc andrews

Yeah, Heaven would've been a good choice too. I think the only problematic thing about creating movies from her books is because there's a formula of four books with each series; the first followed by two sequels and a prequel. It'll be difficult because with each book ending there's questions, and always the protagonist has to learn and grow as the series goes on, which is why they changed the ending for the FiTA movie because they knew no sequel was going to be filmed.

I would've liked to have seen My Sweet Audrina made into a film, though. It's the only stand-alone novel and would've worked well, not to mention it's my favorite next to Flowers in the Attic. Only if I had my way, Neiderman would not touch the screenplay...I'd have somebody who understands and knows the story without corrupting it.

Audrina was really good and was thinking about that when i was commenting but i spaced or something. you have a good point about the formula. I know i would not have liked the prequel one in the FitA cause i hated reading it (but i have to finish books i start) cause i didnt want the evil grandmother to be all sympathetic and that book sort of forces you to understand her...which is why it was good but i still dont have to like it lol

That is true, I don't like when anything tries to reason about certain characters and have its audience to empathize with the antagonist; sometimes I want an evil character to remain that way without knowing the background information, you know? But other times I know why the author/creator does this, and I felt that even though the Grandmother was supposed to be hated there's that little curiosity of how and why she became that way. Sort of understanding her side of the story. So on that level I can understand, but most times that kind of stuff should be left for the reader to speculate and decide the best answer.

The best example I can give of that is Darth Vader from Star Wars. In the first three movies we know he's evil since he crossed over to the Dark Side, and that's all there is to know. But then the prequels came along, explaining his journey down the pathway of becoming evil, which I felt was unnecessary to tell.

thats a good example, but because i am a huge star wars dork...i really liked having a movie/trilogy explaining how it happened- or its possible i'm all for anything with intense lightsaber dueling on volcano planets

I feel bad that Joss isn't doing Wonder Woman, but that means he can do one of the X-Men sequels!!! I WANT HIM TO DIRECT ONE SO BAD. It'd be, like, a new level of awesome.

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2007-02-05 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Are they doing more sequels? I thought the three movies was going to be it. Anyway, it would be totally awesome if not only Joss did something X-Men related, but would actually have his Astonishing X-Men comic series be that influence, if not have them turned into featured films themselves! :)

[identity profile] ex-asthecrow915.livejournal.com 2007-02-05 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah! There going to for sure be Wolverine (prequel) and Magneto, which i can't remember if it's a prequel or sequel (I want to say prequel). I hear there's also talk of an X4, but it's not listed on IMDb or anything. The two solo-characters have scripts so far, but no director. I say Joss!

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2007-02-05 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh definitely. I can only imagine the greatness of which Joss can create behind the camera, and that would be awesome if he directed either one of them. He is THE man, after all. :)
