++ With the news about the possibility of a Black Widow movie (which I'll believe it when I see it, since Marvel has constantly flip-flopped on this for years now), I've been thinking about other ways that her story could be told. Instead of a film, I would much prefer a television series based on a young Natasha and her training in the Black Widow program. Her backstory is fascinating in itself, and I think a show would be more suitable for focusing and exploring those elements of her story than a feature film. Then again, I've always believed that certain stories are much better fitted for television anyway since film can be quite limiting. Plus, it would give us a chance to see someone else take on the character of Natasha Romanova, especially a young Natasha.
++ Agents of SHIELD is considered to be the highest top-rated Marvel show on Rotten Tomatoes to date, followed closely by Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. Seeing it has five seasons so far and has continued to just get better and stronger as it goes on, that very impressive. Well-deserved, imho.
++ There is going to be a new Freeform show called Siren that I am intrigued by. I am fascinated with mermaids along with other mythological creatures, and anything that explores the darker side of mermaid lore is something right up my alley. In general, I like things that challenge the way society and mainstream media has altered to be innocent when in actuality they are darker and much more frightening, particularly if it includes body horror. Mermaids, angels, fairies, most fairytale stories, etc. Granted, I know this series will most likely not be the thriller that I probably want it to be, but I'm intrigued by the concept nonetheless.
++ I had just heard about the whole Heathers television show remake, and now Charmed is officially getting a reboot on the CW, both which are completely unnecessary. Look, this has obviously been mentioned before plenty of times by myself and others, but to reiterate: I'm just so tired of all these reboots/remakes/revivals. True, some of them can be rather decent and even prove themselves to work really well, but those are really rare and let's be honest most of the time all these remakes/revivals are nothing more than just unimaginative money-grabbers that add nothing new. Every single time I hear news about a previous show possibly getting a revival or a reboot made, I inwardly cringe. Not everything needs to be revived, not everything needs to have a remake. Just because it is the current trend right now doesn't mean everyone needs to follow it.

Oh man, I hadn't seen the trailer for Siren, but I am so into it now.

I am super excited for Siren, though! I love mermaid lore.

Also, why do they always want to remake something that was already successful? Why not take something that didn't do well and try to better it? Wouldn't take make much more sense?
Siren looks very interesting because anything dealing with mythological creature lore is my jam.

Charmed gets a remoot? WHY? I used to watch it when I was younger but I have never watched it from start to finish. And for few years I'm been hoping it would come to Netflix of something...

Charmed gets a reboot? WHY?
Cashing in on the remake bandwagon, it would seem. Some of the original cast isn't pleased by this, and neither are the fans, based on some of the reactions I've been seeing.
I stopped watching Charmed after Prue was no longer there, but I was obsessed with it during those earlier seasons. I haven't watched the entire show but I do have fond memories of when I was watching it. I've heard that the show wasn't exactly that great in the later seasons though, and I've definitely heard about the BTS drama that happened during that time too. But regardless of all of that, this is one of those shows that it is well-known enough to leave alone. Like, why is it necessary to completely retool the show and basically have it be in name only? What is the point?

edit: I can't even fathom Charmed. Just, so much NO. Even Holly Marie Combs is against it.
no subject
Exactly. And the thing is, we've already had people attempt to try to match what Heathers brought us originally, because that movie is so iconic and many creators were either inspired by or wanted to pay homage to that with their own creation, which is fine. But you cannot recreate the original. It is impossible. Heathers is unique by itself that any attempt at trying to remake it will end in disaster, and from the looks of it (and the sounds based on comments from the showrunner) this will take a nosedive into being an embarrassing mess.
I can't even fathom Charmed. Just, so much NO. Even Holly Marie Combs is against it.
Seriously. I'm glad she's been upfront about her disappointing and voicing her displeasure.

It looks interesting. Might be a letdown though, we never know.
Charmed is one of those shows that should remain untouched. Like Buffy.
I heard they will do another Sabrina the Teenage Witch à la Buffy, and this came from Melissa Joan Hart directly. I don't know what I feel about it either. I liked the campyness of the original.
With the amount of remakes and such in both TV AND movies, you'd think Hollywood's originality went down the drain or something. That and the endless sequels lately... Or pulling out one character and making a whole entire movie/show about him/her...
no subject
Yeah, I think it's going to turn into another one of those melodramatic teen dramas, which is fine if that is the demographic they're going for, but I really want some kind of fantasy thriller of mermaids getting back at humans for mistreating them or misrepresenting them, etc. The trailer implied that at least some of the story will probably be about that, though idk about the rest. Still, it looks interesting to at least check out.

Remember when they attempted to do a reboot of Buffy in 2010 or something? Thankfully, it never happened because the script was really bad so they scrapped it entirely, but that whole ordeal was a mess. It was Buffy just without anything resembling BTVS at all, none of the universe or lore or anything, which is ridiculous. The same thing is happening with Charmed in that it's just in-name-only. All of this is what I call lazy. If you want to do a show about sisters being witches, make an original show instead of trying to bank off of what was already successful.

This one is a bit different because Sabrina Spellman is a comic book character from Archie Comics. Sabrina the Teenage Witch with Melissa Joan Hart was based off of the character from the comics but not a direct adaptation. This new show is going to be focusing on being an adaptation of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chilling_Adventures_of_Sabrina). So, this isn't necessarily a remake of MJH's Sabrina but just another adaptation of the comic book character, which I'm completely fine with and I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with it.

That's what's been said for decades now. Remakes, reboots, revivals, endless sequels and franchises, there's been both a fatigue and a demand for them on and off for years. Hollywood and mainstream media are stuck in this neverending cycle of remaining in nostalgia because that is the safest space to be to rack in that cash. They would rather do that than risk something new. And the sad thing is? So many people buy into it. Revivals are the newest thing in television because so many people get manipulated by the nostalgia of seeing characters again.

I never watched it but I know it was based on The Witches of Eastwick but there was the show Witches of East End... I thought this could have gone ok and no need to take Charmed and do something else with it. I don't like that they'll take the name and do something else entirely.
I do not remember seeing anything or hearing anything about a Buffy reboot. A Giles series and a Faith series, which I have heard of for years would have been very awesome, however. I know Eliza refused the faith one to do either Tru Calling or Dollhouse though.
I was a huge fan of the Archie comics but not Sabrina. I actually didn't know there were Sabrina comics. I know she was in some of the Archie comics however. I have to say I am curious about it.
There are so many books that could be turned into series or movies, it's crazy that the demand is much bigger on remakes/reboots and continued sequels that, let's be honest, aren't all that great but sometimes are... One movie franchise I like is Bring It On. The first is a classic, I dislike the second, I adore the third with Hayden Panettiere, the 4rth was ok. I liked the 5th and thought the 6th was meh. Better than the second but they could have just not made it.
Anyway *laughs*

Oh yeah, that was kind of a huge deal (http://buffy.wikia.com/wiki/Untitled_Buffy_theatrical_reboot) at the time of the announcement. Many fans were upset about it as were most of the cast and crew from the show. Thankfully, nothing came from it, but it does put questions on whether anyone would even dare to try to do this again. There are just some things you shouldn't touch, y'know?
Eliza wanted to take a break from being Faith to do other things at the time (Tru Calling), but said she was game for doing a Faith spin-off sometime in the future. I honestly wish they would revisit that. Same with the Giles spin-off, since I kept hearing about it throughout the years. I think most fans kind of want to see either of those, even if it's just a limited series or something. I know that they could just do so in the comics, but it would be amazing to have something on the screen.
I actually didn't know there were Sabrina comics.
I wasn't even aware she was based on a comic book character, which is hilarious in hindsight since at the beginning of every episode of the show it would say "based on the character from Archie Comics", lol.

Exactly, or anyone who has an original idea for a movie or television show concept. There are just so many original story ideas out there that deserve to be told on the big or small screen, but Hollywood is all about the safety net of remakes and sequels to give a damn about those. Why risk something different and original when you can have the same old shit time and again?
One of my favorite movie franchises was Resident Evil. Sure, it didn't resemble much of the video games but after the first film it wasn't intending too. It was just some entertaining action movie surrounding zombies and Milla Jovovich kicking ass and taking names. They weren't perfect, but damn I was all about that franchise so much. I'm hoping that the new Tomb Raider movie based on the reboot of the video game ends up becoming a film franchise too.
no subject
Nope. I wouldn't say no to a reunion of sort, like a two parter or whatever, just to give us an idea where they all are now... you know, even if they are up to season 11 in comics (which I haven't read at all yet even though I want to) but otherwise... Leave Buffy alone!
Oh right, it was for Tru Calling. Oops. They could still do it, that spin-off, I mean. For Giles's, it was supposed to be during his Ripper days, I think. That could be kinda harder to do unless they take somebody else completely to play the younger Giles.
It's funny how they referred to Sabrina basing her from the Archie comics if there were comics centered on her to begin with. I remember her in some Archie stories. Having short white-ish hair with a headband and Salem, her cat always around as well. She lived in quite the ordinary house where she never really invited people in, if memory serves. it's been sooooooo long since i read those comics.
Oh yes, resident Evil. I didn't know the video games at the time the first movie came out but I loved the movie and I have followed that franchise since. I bought the very last movie today too. And I'm not really interested in the games.

I agree 100 % on this! I am so over it!
I started watching This Is Us recently and it felt so good to have a show with no baggage! (Also a VERY good show IMHO)
SHIELD deserves all the hype it can get! This season is one of the best ones so far! I absolutely LOVE it!

This season of Agents of SHIELD is so different from their previous seasons, and that's a good thing because it's been amazing so far I can't wait to see where it goes from here.

I've seen most of Charmed, except for the final season, and I can't say I'm interested in a reboot.

I've never seen the show fully (I stopped after Prue was gone) but I was fond of the earlier seasons, since it was part of my WB show lineup during that time. I've seen many mixed reactions to this reboot, many being very negative. Holly Marie Combs has been quite vocal lately about her displeasure about the decision to completely retool the show. I find it completely unnecessary. Want a show about witches who are sisters? Do something new and original, don't do a in-name-only reboot and hope that fans of the original will be part of the audience to get more numbers.
no subject
That, or they chose to adapt that particular story on purpose and are lying about it not to get sued by Marvel or something. Who knows?
no subject
Oooh, I hadn't heard of that Sirens show but it looks promising. I'll give it a try.
I watch the Paramount Network a lot and they've been showing soooo many previews and BTS featurettes on the Heathers reboot and it looks so bad I want to cry. And ITA the reboots are getting out of hand. Seems like a new one is announced every week.

I'm honestly baffled at the notion of them remaking Heathers and setting it in 2018. It makes no sense, and just judging from the trailer it's so cringe-worthy. It's like they're trying too hard to appeal to the younger generation by being ~edgy and ~risque when instead it just too embarrassing. There are just certain things you cannot recreate and shouldn't even try to emulate, ever, and this is one of them. It's one thing to pay homage to the original film by doing something else, as many have over the years, but to remake it entirely? So unnecessary. Plus, I don't think the showrunner understands what the original movie was about, if they even watched it at all.

Not sure how I feel about the Charmed reboot. I agree, I don't think it's necessary. I'd certainly check out the pilot at least but I don't think it would top the original for me.
no subject
At the description of the reboot, it has absolutely no connection to the original show, so what is the point? Why not make a separate original fantasy series about sisters who are witches without trying to do a in-name-only of a show that is already well-known? It makes no sense. Reboots and remakes in general need to cease being a huge thing, especially when they attempt to bank on the success and popularity of something else, because I view that as completely lazy, imho.

Hadn't heard about Siren, but I haven't dropped the channel pack w/ freeform yet (honestly I probably won't until my 2 year rate lock-in is over), so I may have to give that a look

Good dark mermaid story: The Rolling Deep and Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant. Mermaids are awesome and dark stories are just fantastic. I've also heard the movie The Lure is great but haven't watched it just yet.
With you on the remakes. Some really do rock but there are a lot of flops in there. I love seeing new shows get created and seeing fresh new ideas. I'm sure most of the younger audience for Heathers won't even really know the film so I'm not sure who they're trying to appeal to with the reboot.
no subject
And I find it truly hilarious that the director of Red Sparrow doesn't see the connection people are making between that and Black Widow. It's like, really? lol
Oh, I'll have to check those out.
Yeah, I'm not entirely certain what they think they're going to accomplish with this remake television series. The younger demographic they're targeting probably hasn't even seen the original Heathers and won't be as interested in it, and those who have probably will be insulted by how cringey and embarrassing it'll be in comparison. It just makes no sense, especially by remaking it into a show set in 2018. No, just no. Plus, there's been a lot of television and movies made since where they were clearly influenced by Heathers, but were their own identity. Mean Girls, for example, was this for many young people. So why bother trying to remake something so iconic to begin with? So unnecessary.
no subject
Influenced by Heathers would have been way better. Mean Girls or Jawbreaker were definitely related to Heathers but did their own thing and turned out much better. The new series could be good but I'm pretty sure I've heard rumblings that it's not great.
no subject
Oh yes, I love Jawbreaker. It's lesser known but is still amazing and such a cult classic.
I feel like being influenced by the original film is safer than just doing an entire remake, because Heathers is kind of untouchable and impossible to replica. It's going to be really, really, really difficult to maintain a good level of writing, direction, acting, and story that matches the original. Unfortunately, I don't think that will be the case with this show since it already sounds like a mess. I think I saw someone refer to it as more of a parody of the movie, which is not good. There are just some things you cannot recreate because they were very unique for the time they came out.
On the other hand, I've heard that Heathers: The Musical is actually quite good and that it stays true to the nature of the film. I've heard bits and pieces of the soundtrack for it and it's very catchy. So, there's that at least.
no subject
Like, I get the remake/reboot initiative. Sure, okay, whatever. But it's kind of the same problem that we're having with the superhero saturation- we're hitting remake saturation? Or if you do a reboot, do something new with it, a la Ocean's 8.
Esp a show like Charmed. It was already a gem enough, albeit it got weird towards the end.
no subject
I feel like we've had a remake saturation for a long time now, it just comes in different waves. I remember from the early to mid-00s Hollywood was having this trend of doing American remakes of foreign movies (particularly Asian horror), and now it's just remaking anything and everything that was popular. But it's not just remakes, it's the whole nostalgia wave. Remakes, reboots, revivals, all the endless sequels and neverending franchises. It moderation this wouldn't be so much of an issue, but since it has become such a big trend over recent years for both movies and television people are just becoming so sick and tired of seeing it everywhere constantly that it's honestly just general fatigue of it at this point.

I really love how it manages to get better and stronger with each season, trying different things, this season especially since it is completely different from anything they've done before. Even while they still are in the agreement to coincide with upcoming Marvel movies, they're able to make it work. It's impressive.
no subject
I agree that Black Widow's backstory would make for an excellent TV show. At this stage in the MCU, I can't see where a movie centering her would fit. I guess we'll have a better idea once Infinity Wars plays out.
I got distracted away from AoS during season four, but I want to go back to it soon. I keep hearing things and kicking myself for falling behind.
no subject
Oh, definitely get back into soon! It's been so amazing. :D

I wouldn't mind if they brought Charmed back in the form of, say, a prequel or something. Which I remember was the initial concept when this idea was being toted around some while ago, where it would be set in the 70s and featuring the Halliwell's mother or something like that. That would be interesting. But to have this new show be in-name-only is not only unnecessary, it's super lazy and such an insult. Even if it turns out to be somewhat decent, it doesn't need to have the Charmed name attached, which has already soured people to it, including some of the original cast.
no subject
YES!! This.
