Even though I knew it was coming, it still doesn't hurt any less.

++ Netflix have now officially cancelled The Punisher and Jessica Jones, the last of their Marvel lineup, with Jessica Jones still scheduled to premiere its third season despite this announcement. It's not surprising or unexpected considering what they've been doing for the last several months by cancelling these shows one-by-one, but it's still disappointing and disheartening nonetheless.

But as [livejournal.com profile] frelling_tralk pointed out with Jeph Loeb's recent open letter to fans, the statement seems somewhat hopeful that these shows might continue elsewhere in the future. I've seen some talk circulating around that Hulu might be where they could be revived, considering that Marvel's Runaways is doing well over there and there is some scheduled Marvel animated series lineup up, not to mention that Hulu is partially owned by Disney, it could be a great way of expanding Hulu's service. It is also a better place instead of Disney+ where they are leaning more towards "family friendly" content which Jessica Jones and the like are, well, not. I really don't want to get my hopes up because it's still just rumors at this point with no real confirmation of any negotiations, but at the same time I want to remain hopeful for some kind of miracle to happen because I want something positive to come out from this massive mismanaged clusterfuck.

++ On a more uplifting note, the other day I watched this amazing video talking about how the fan campaign to save The Expanse worked, and how unique it was that it actually did work the way it did. I already knew about the situation with Syfy only signing for "first-run linear rights", but not about the rest of it. It's just an interesting look at how streaming has changed the way people have started watching content, how it can help in particular cases, and how certain networks really need to catch-up and evolve with the times when it comes to adapting how media is changing.

Now that I think about it, Netflix seems to be going for a more HBO/AMC route, with period dramas and grittier dramedies as opposed to Marvel-esque stuff. Jessica Jones may actually have done really well on the CW, I think. (Of course, I have never seen it, but from what I know about it.)

I don't know, this is all uncharted territory and I'm not even sure Netflix knows. But it sucks that JJ has been cancelled, and I do hope they find a new home. I really should watch it.

lol at the thought of Jessica Jones on the CW. That show is far too good to be on that network, trust me.

I think streaming was good for these shows, though. Most of them don't really belong on network television since they were given a chance to thrive differently and managed to succeed, despite this mess that happened. But you're right, aside from getting rid of anything that isn't "original", Netflix seems to have a specific plan in mind for their original programming and whatever happened behind closed doors, whether it's a Netflix versus Disney situation or something else entirely, they wanted to sever ties with their partnership with Marvel . It sucks, especially with the way things were handled. I'm hoping that they find a new home, though.

Also yes, you should definitely watched Jessica Jones. The first season is definitely the best season. The reaction to S2 was mixed, but I liked it, though I will admit it wasn't as strong as the first. But overall the show is definitely worth it. Krysten Ritter is amazing in the role. :)

I'm only surprised that they already made it official for JJ,I thought they'd wait to announce it afterwards like they did with the other shows but it's so obvious by now that it was never about vieving numbers so I guess they are done pretentending and it doesnt't matter to them now if people still want to watch JJ's final season lmao. I mean,I went into season 2 of The Punisher knowing that it would be the last and probably almost everyone else as well but it's still different to ~know than to really *know* officially.

Yeah, I was also thinking that they'd at least wait until Jessica Jones premiered its third season, since that seemed to be the trend whenever these cancellations happened, but I guess they didn't want to wait for that long if this was already a done deal. And perhaps it was a way of maybe getting it out of the way so whatever negotiations need to happen for it to move to another home. I mean, I knew that it was going to happen but having it be official still stings, y'know?

I wonder how this will affect how people will view S3, though. Will people care to still watch when the season drops? I'm hoping so, because I want the views to say, "look, you may have broken up with Marvel, but we still love this show and want more". idk

Yes, it was to be expected. I hope for you guys that it gets a new home.

I'm hoping so, too. I mean, Jessica Jones has been considered the most watched of all the Marvel lineup, and the Marvel shows did succeed incredibly well. Despite this mess, I really want them to go and thrive elsewhere that will support them.

massive mismanaged clusterfuck
That's a really good way to put it...

Canceling Jessica Jones before it's even released just shows how little they care about the Marvel shows now.

The Expanse is finally on Amazon Germany! Since I'm watching it with my mother, it's going a little slower, but I'm liking it (ep 4) so far :D

It really does. That, or they are quickly severing ties with the remaining shows because they didn't want to prolong this partnership breakup any longer than they already have, especially since everyone kinda already knew that it was going to be inevitable anyway. But still, you're right, even though the Marvel shows have done incredibly well there, Netflix truly doesn't care. If they did they would've given all of them a heads up about the situation. Also, they barely promoted Daredevil and The Punisher before their seasons premiered. It makes me worry that they're not even going to bother advertising Jessica Jones for its third season when it comes out due to this announcement.

I really, really want to believe that somehow Jessica Jones and the rest can be saved. Leaving some of them open-ended like this is just cruel.

Oh, yay! That's awesome! :D I'm glad that you're liking it so far.

I hadn't heard about the cancellation officially, but I did see a gifset on Tumblr that made me wonder, since it said something like "thanks for five great years" and gifs of all the lead characters. *sigh*

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2019-02-21 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
It makes me sad seeing those gifsets, because while I know it's been announced and all of that, seeing people making thank you/farewell dedications makes it feel so final, y'know? And I don't want it to be final, I want them to be saved, to be revived on Hulu or something. Just, idk.

When I saw the news about the cancellation of The Punisher and Jessica Jones, I wasn't really surprised. More disappointed. But maybe we will be lucky enough to watch it elsewhere.

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2019-02-21 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
My thoughts exactly. I knew it was going to happen eventually, it was just a matter of when (I guess they didn't want to wait until after S3 of Jessica Jones premiered, like they did with all the rest of them), but regardless it's still disappointing all the same. I really, really want to hope that somehow they can be revived somewhere else, Hulu seems to be a perfect fit. But we probably won't hear anything for a while whether this will be the case or not, which sucks.
