I'll be your Wonder Woman whenever, just call me and I'll be there.

++ Patty Jenkins is set to direct the Wonder Woman sequel. (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

++ Speaking of Wonder Woman, I'm incredibly intrigued by the new film Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, which is biographical drama focusing on not only the creator of Wonder Woman, but also on the polyamorous relationship between himself, his wife and their domestic partner, both of whom were inspirations and influences for the fictional character. I hadn't known about this and reading up on their actual history it's incredibly fascinating especially with the special relationship they had with each other. After seeing interviews with the cast and director, I'm very interested in watching this film.

++ Daniel Dae Kim has been cast in the Hellboy reboot. As many are probably aware, Ed Skrein had previously been for that particular role before an online uproar happened in regards to the casting, since that character is originally Asian. Once getting wind of this, Ed Skrein graciously bowed out of the role which has allowed Daniel Dae Kim to be cast instead. This, ladies and gentlemen, is how one handles racially insensitive casting bullshit. While Hollywood may never change in whitewashing roles, this proves that actors can and do have the power to understand and acknowledge such things, and how there is no excuse for them to not step down from a particular role that they know isn't meant for them, because in turn this can become the opportunity that many minorities don't often get since they're mistreated within the industry in general. Ed used his privilege to acknowledge the issue, kindly step away from the project, which in turn has allowed someone like Daniel Dae Kim to take on the role instead. Also, as a sidenote, after what happened earlier with Hawaii Five-0, I'm happy that Daniel has gotten work.

I also love how Chloe Bennet commented about this situation (before DDK was cast, btw), because being Asian herself she has spoken out about these kinds of things and is a huge activist for Asian-Americans within the industry. I love her so much. ❤

Yay for Patty Jenkins!!!

Chloe Bennet is amazing! I love her so much!!!

I love how Chloe has always taken a stand on these issues and doesn't silence herself when it comes to calling things out. She is just overall an amazing woman, I love her so much. ❤

I am also very intrigued by Professor Marston and the Wonder Women. :-)

Yay for Daniel Dae Kim! <3 Ed Skrein did the decent thing and he's not even that famous. Suddenly, some big stars look even worse than they already did.

Suddenly, some big stars look even worse than they already did.

Seriously. There is honestly no excuse now when big Hollywood names are in roles that they should know better aren't for them, especially ones who claim to be for equality and such.

Wait, wait, wait. There is a Hellboy reboot?
Why a reboot? I mean, we are all waiting for a third movie of the Franchise with Ron Perlman, right? I mean, I am waiting for it. ._.
What did I miss? O_O

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2017-09-17 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they're rebooting the entire franchise, new director, new actor (David Harbour will be playing Hellboy), everything. Which sucks because both Ron Perlman and Guillermo del Toro have said they would be all up for doing a third Hellboy film. But unfortunately, this is Hollywood. Remakes/reboots of franchises are common place. So while I'm happy that DDK got the role after the casting hoopla, it's still rather :/ that this reboot is happening in the third place when we could just have Hellboy 3.

idk idk idk

*shakeshead*
I don't understand it. Ron Perlman was absolutely awesome as Hellboy. And because I follow him at Facebook, I know he was ready for a new movie. He wanted it and asked the fans if they would like it. He got a lot of encouragement.

I mean, I will watch the new Hellboy but ... but it won't be the same without Ron Perlman. :/

Glad to see that Hellboy went the right way with the casting.

So excited for the new Wonder Woman movie!

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women was just here at TIFF and a few friends of mine went and really enjoyed it. Sounds like it's an interesting one.

I know that won't always be the case in these situations, so it was incredibly lucky that it worked out the way it did. It's such a low bar, unfortunately, but I'm hoping that this will be that tiny step in the right direction for more actors to follow suit which might give the industry a damn clue that they shouldn't be whitewashing roles and should be giving POC/minorities more opportunities that aren't limiting to stereotypes.

I've also heard from others who saw the film that it's great, as well. Which makes me so excited.

Is that a good thing, that director for WW?

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2017-09-17 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Patty Jenkins was the director of the first film. So having her back for the sequel has got many people relieved/excited. :)

I am very pleased about the Asian-American casting b/c I'm Asian, and I gripe a lot about the lack of Asian representation in media. I basically get excited whenever there are Asians on TV, even if they're just all the evil people in the Defenders verse, which is kind of sad, but I just want something!

I'm not bitter at all that they didn't make Iron Fist Asian. It would have been a perfect opportunity.

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2017-09-18 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way. I'm half-Asian and not seeing myself represented is super depressing, so I latch onto anything that has good kind of Asian representation. I also root for Asian-American actors in the industry getting these kinds of roles, too.

I'm not bitter at all that they didn't make Iron Fist Asian. It would have been a perfect opportunity.

Seriously, considering that they almost did with Lewis Tan (who was more than qualified) and yet cast the most mediocre white man ever speaks volumes to their priorities. This could have been the best opportunity to get some of that proper representation, but they went the lazy route instead. We could have had it all, dammit.

I've never heard of this film but it sounds so interesting. I'll have to check it out. :) I've been obsessed with all things WW since the movie.

I wasn't even aware of it until recently when I saw someone make a post about it, and I got so intrigued based on their description and the trailer alone that I ended up investigating further and I'm very fascinated by the story.

Plus, having a healthy poly relationship depicted in the media, on the big screen no less, is such a good. :)

I knew that the sequel was happening, but many people were wondering if Patty was going to be returning as the director and it took quite a while before anything was officially confirmed about that. But I am so happy that it was! The first film was so good. I only hope that the second doesn't suffer from sequelitis, as some franchises sometimes do.

I'm the same, I wasn't aware of the background of the creator until I saw the trailer for the film, and I ended up doing some research. So I'm super intrigued to see the film.

The fact that casting Asian actors to play Asian characters is so confusing for casting directors continues to baffle me. Then again, welcome to Whitewashed Hollywood where they barely learn their lesson and think they can get away with anything just as long as it makes money. I'm glad what Ed did though, not only did he back out of the role he also showed that he clearly understands the issue which is an important factor.

[identity profile] malicat.livejournal.com 2017-09-18 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
What I really liked about Ed Skrein's letter is that he didn't 'just' back out because of the uproar but it seems to indicate that he truly GETS it which is even more important imo. On top of that,he isn't a huge star like Scarlett Johansson for example so turning down a role in a (presumably) blockbuster is a big deal. I hope that this will be a lesson for other actors and the casting people themselves!

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2017-09-18 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. He articulated clearly how he understood the issue and stepped away from the role because it was the right thing to do. That is a key factor, he actually got it. There were no excuses, no faux apology. So many times we've seen actors take roles that are meant for minorities, and either are oblivious, don't see the big deal and end up making excuses or end up apologizing only after the fact, y'know once they've gotten their paycheck. It's often infuriating and it's what gets you mocked because we've seen this time and again with white actors who continually just don't. get. it.

I want to hope that somewhere in the future this won't be a huge problem anymore, because it's a damn travesty that it still is a common occurrence today within the industry. But this proves that actors do have the power to change outcomes, even if it's something small as turning down a role so someone who is more qualified and appropriate for it could have the chance of getting it.

I've never seen any of the Hellboy movies but I love DDK so good for him!

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2017-09-23 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I only saw the first Hellboy, I don't recall seeing the second one, but it's been a long while so. And regardless that this is entirely a new reboot I'm happy that Daniel Dae Kim nonetheless.
