Okay, I'm still not over this trailer because it seriously made me all giddy and smiling because it is just so good. But I'd like to take a few moments to say a few things regarding this trailer.
First, I am beyond happy the way they have marketed the film. Like most, I was fearing they would be marketing it as romance or romantic triangle as some seem to think it apparently is, when it isn't. I mean, I cringe whenever someone compares it to Twilight because it's definitely not the same, not even close. But with Hollywood, they would want to target as many audiences as possible and with the Twilight being the "in" thing these days they would want to take that route as a marketing plot. But they didn't. Instead, they took the direct approach with what this story is about: in a totalitarian society in a dystopian future where kids are chosen to fight to the death in an arena, and focusing on our main protagonist and her sacrificing herself in place of her younger sister. There is nothing about romance, or potential romance, anywhere in this trailer. There might be in future trailers and previews, of course, but the fact that there were zero evidence in this one? Major kudos.
Secondly, I love how the trailer was put together. While some say that it was showing mostly all of the beginning, I think that was the point. We're seeing the grim reality that these are kids being prepped in order to kill each other in a grand arena. That this is a big deal in this society, a huge deal that is a frightening experience disguised as something honorable and to be celebrated, only for the entertainment for those in the Capitol of Panem and for the rest of the Districts to watch in horror as their children fight to the death, and not being able to do anything about it.
I think this trailer was well-done, well-constructed, and swiftly did what it needed to do to attract people's attention to what this film, this story, is essentially about and why you should see it. I approve.
On a particular, possibly unpopular opinion, am I the only one who doesn't ship anyone in this series? I have just read The Hunger Games, still needing to get the last two, but there's all this talk about who Katniss should be with and honestly, I don't really care. I am Team Katniss. I am for Katniss and her love and devotion to her family, for her sister Prim, and for her survival. I don't give a crap about any kind of romantic affairs she may or may not have. I may be the only one since the entire Hunger Games fandom is all about the shipping, so idk. But there you go.

Nope. I love Katniss and I love Peeta, but I do not really like them together. I don't give a crap about Gale. There are some side characters in book 2 that I can get kind of shippy about, but for this series I just am not into shipping.

I just hope that it does well in theaters to be able to do the next book in the series. *crosses fingers*

And the film looks like they are going for all angles, not just from Katniss, which looks totally cool and makes me anticipate how we're going to be seeing things a little bit differently than how the books were written.

2) I'm not so sure you should read more idk

I thought Katniss was a POC, though. Although I looove Jennifer Lawrence.

I couldn't agree more. I mean, just looking at the trailer they got so many things right, from the scenes and how I personally envisioned them, and for the rest of it with them in the arena, it's going to enhance those scenes tremendously. :D
I thought Katniss was a POC, though.
There was a lot of controversy surrounding this when the casting was first announced. Katniss is described in the book to have dark hair and olive skin, although honestly that could mean anything. I think many people believed she was POC based on that and when the role went to Jennifer Lawrence, there was a huge uproar about it because that was not who they envisioned the character to be (esp because Jennifer Lawrence was blonde) Idk, I understand the debates about Hollywood constantly whitewashing since that is a huge problem, but IMHO I think it's slightly misdirected here because of the description being ambiguous on her ethnicity.

Ah, I see. I'm not that familiar with the universe in the books and I do agree I can't remember anything that specific about her ethnicity. So I just assumed she was, hah.

But you need to read the other two books, because the characters - particularly the past victors - in the second and third are THE BEST.
Tbh, my favourite relationship is Katniss/Haymitch, NOT IN A SHIPPING WAY, just in a general relationship way.

But who knows? Once I get to the second and third book that may change. But as for right now, I'm all Team Katniss all the way. :)

You should read the other two books, bb... it'll only take you like a couple of days. Four tops.
Honestly just ignore the insanity of fandom. Ignoring the insanity of fandom is kindof the best modus operandi for EVERY fandom. If people aren't mooning over Katniss/Peeta or Katniss/Gale, they're complaining about how they think Katniss should be a POC despite there being no evidence to say she is, and much more to indicate she is caucasian, however it not mattering at all because THG takes place in a POSTRACIAL WORLD.
So tbh, in fandom you're either going to get the moonstruck lovey doveys, or the raging politico-angsters.
There'll be no peace for you either way.
I was Katniss/Life until THE LAST CHAPTER OF THE LAST BOOK. In fact, I think it was like... the last few pages. I didn't ship anyone until Katniss did.
But really she just needs to be single, and happy, and live a life free of mandrama.

Can I just say word to what you just wrote?
I mean, in terms of the movie casting in general, I understand the importance of acknowledging how Hollywood continues to whitewash their films and ignore POC actors, and that is a serious issue that I am behind 100% as it needs to be addressed frequently as possible. However in terms of Katniss Everdeen, her character description was very ambiguous and left to the interpretation of the reader. So honestly, the anger and outrage in this case is a bit misdirected because of that, imo.
But really she just needs to be single, and happy, and live a life free of mandrama.
Same here. I'm sitting here, looking at the shipping wars and thinking, "why should Katniss need to choose someone to be with? Why can't she just be her own person and happy by herself?" I mean, I would prefer she, Gale and Peeta just be best buds without an romantic ties whatsoever.

Everything the writer of that article says makes so so much sense, and she has excellent reasoning.
YES the hollywood casting of caucasian over POC is highly problematic, and the fact that the casting call was for only caucasian actresses is problematic in the respect that it is never explicitely stated that Katniss is of any race and nor should it matter so long as she has "that Seam look".
However if the casting director read the material and came to the same conclusions as that article did, then it would have only made sense to put out the call for caucasian actresses.
If it was done to blatantly and racially exclude POC just because, then THAT is where there are serious problems that need to be addressed.
Why can't she just be her own person and happy by herself?
For some reason there is this notion around that we need to be in a romantic relationship to be HAPPY and can never be content on our own. I see plenty of people in my clinic who come to me for psychotherapy with mild depression because of being single and on their own, or because a relationship has ended.
I just want to shake them and be like "ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?!? YOU CAN'T HANDLE BEING WITH YOURSELF?! GET OVER IT. LOVE YOURSELF. LOVE LIFE. STOP BEING SO DEPENDANT AND NEEDY ON OTHER PEOPLE TO GIVE YOUR LIFE MEANING."
Also, Katniss is just a young girl. Surely she can figure out the relationship thing when she's grown up and lived a little and IS READY for any of that, if she wants it.

I am very hyped up for the movie, thanks to the trailer. And based on what we've seen so far, it seems to be very faithful to the book itself and that is what I like seeing. :)

As far as shipping, I go back and forth. There were times when I was really invested in the Katniss/Peeta relationship and other times where I didn't care either way. In the end, I'd say I ship them casually. I also ship the pairing

I'll just have to wait and see how I feel regarding the last two books. So far though, Peeta hasn't really made an impression on me, and I was mostly focused on Katniss and her survival and her dedication to her family and District 12.

I love how the trailer focused on the story and not the romance. Because story > romance imo
no subject
I was drawn to the story in the first place, I never really noticed (or cared) about any kind of potential romance at all. The Games overshadowed that aspect, from my perspective.
no subject
But I agree with you about the marketing, because focusing on any sort of romance would probably have put off people who I think would enjoy the movie. Also, the first book doesn't really have any anyway and I'd hate for them to force some in.
no subject
Exactly. I know some fans were hoping there be some of it featured, but there is hardly any romance of any kind, besides Peeta's confession, focused within the book anyway. The majority of it is about this totalitarian world they live in, the barbaric nature of these Games, and Katniss' survival. Any kind of trivial romance or romantic triangle is nonexistent, and if they had marketed it as such, even though I just finished the first book, I would have been pissed.
The trailer itself did a lovely job selling this movie, telling us precisely what this story is going to be about. I have watched it hundreds of times and I still can't get over how emotional I get, from the clips they chose to the music they used while playing them, and the countdown at the very end. Love it, and I can't wait for it to be in theaters.
