Joss is Boss, so GTFO.
Unfortuately, it looks like the Buffy reboot movie will be happening after all, much to everyone's dismay.
This has been rumored for a while, however to have confirmation that it'll actually be happening is rather distressing, because there simply cannot be Buffy without Joss Whedon involved. I'm sorry, but it's true. While sometimes certain reboots can be good and take on an entirely different entity of their own, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a cult classic and shouldn't be touched no matter what. Besides, the entire fanbase is gonna rip this to shreds, which is why I'm laughing and scoffing at the "active fan base waiting for Buffy to return to the big screen" quote because we do, just WITH JOSS WHEDON ATTACHED TO THE PROJECT. IT'S JOSS OR NOTHING BITCHES, GET IT RIGHT! Seriously, I want to know where this "active fan base" resides and how they interpret that into new movie that deals with nothing we want to see.
I predict this to flop and fail harder than anything, because it is just utter blasphemy. Also considering the entire description of what they want to do with it, I'm fearing they'll do what Joss desperately tried to avoid in creating Buffy Summers as a character. :/
This will not end well, at all.

And without Joss, it just won't be good. Sorry, but that's the truth.
There is only one Buffy Summers, and this is she:

massacringrebooting past hits. This is going to tank so hard, I can't even imagine.

And this, without Joss Whedon? I cannot even imagine. It's his story, he created the character in the first place, and I cannot foresee this succeeding or getting praise at all.

DNW this at all. :/

My guess, it's all about the money. Hollywood seems to think that if they re-boot something at least the fanbase will pay money to see it. I can't help but feel they're also trying to cash in on the vampire craze.
no subject
That's the unfortunate price for being in the business.
no subject
Sadly that sounds about right.
no subject
NO, THERE'S NOT. Geez. WHAT IS WITH ALL THE REMAKES? Remakes of old shows, old movies, old ideas. And there's a difference between a show still having a fanbase and wanting to see a DIFFERENT VERSION OF THE CHARACTER OTHER THAN THE ONE WE FELL IN LOVE WITH.
no subject
HOLLYWOOD GET YOUR OWN IDEAS AND STOP REBOOTING/REMAKING/RECREATING THINGS THAT DON'T NEED TO BE MESSED WITH. There are times when certain remakes can be good, but this is a recipe for unpleasantness and tons of people are gonna be beyond pissed off at this entire idea.
no subject
I think they need a lesson in how fans work. I don't think I have ever in my life encountered a fanbase that was actually enthusiastic to see an onscreen version of their fandom with different actors, a different creator, and a "tone and style that are relevant to today."
Buffy - all the things that made us like Buffy = this movie will probably not do well.
no subject
The article says that it's gonna be just like the Buffy we once knew, but that's just false advisement for something they know they are just gonna mess up the character. And since Joss isn't part of the project at all (not like he would ever want to be anyway) there's no guaranteeing anything that whatever they choose for Buffy to be, would be Buffy that we've come to know and love since the beginning. I'm sorry, but there is only ONE Buffy Anne Summers and she's not going to be replaced by some basic wannabe, no matter who they choose Buffy will always remain SMG for me and everyone else.

Nobody messes with Buffy and gets away with it, especially when involving the Joss Whedon part of fandom. Shit will definitely hit the fan and it will not be pretty.

There are certain things you just CANNOT TOUCH no matter what, and doing this without his consent? I just, I can't.
WHAT IS WITH ALL THE REBOOTS LATELY? REBOOTING AND REMAKING EVERYONE IS NOT ORIGINALITY FOLKS, IT IS PURE LAZINESS AND THIS IS WHY HOLLYWOOD HAS BECOME SUCH A JOKE NOW AND NOBODY WANTS TO WATCH YOUR CRAP. SRSLY.

I didn't even know that! *headdesk*

Joss' reaction, on the other hand, is made of utter and complete win.

I loved Joss's reaction, bittersweet as it is. Along with some of the original cast who are also displeased and unimpressed by it. It makes me feel a little better knowing that nobody is happy with this news. Makes it more probably that it will definitely crash and burn before it even is created. Let us hope!

But seven?
This = laziness and a desire to capitalise on the current vampire craze. That's all.

It's like they're entire mindset is about how popular or successful something had been and rebooting it into their own version would get them the same kind of attention plus more money, which that's what all this is about aside from going into the vampire craze lately. Money money money. No respect for the original creation, or the story, all these promises that it'll be the "same character" that Buffy had always been. No. That's all lies and they know it.
And yes, it's wayyyy too early anyway for even a thought of a reboot of any kind. :/ STOP THE REBOOTS ALREADY! IT IS ALMOST ALWAYS NEVER SUCCESSFUL!

Joss's reaction both makes me laugh and hurt for him all at once. Seems like it was not his idea to cut him off from the project. If it was a scheduling issue wouldn't we all have rather the reboot wait?
You're right, this will not end well. Serenity worked, yes, but Serenity is a completely different animal in that it had every single original core cast member AND Joss.
Edited to fix typos born out of frustration and tiredness, sorry!

Reading Joss's response made me happy he disapproved of this news, and it also stung because it shows, once again, that Hollywood doesn't give a shit about respecting creators and their works. Once again, TPTB takes over, pissing on the little people. :(
It's sad and infuriating, but at the same time I'm glad that there's massive negative response from almost everyone, from fans and original cast members and Joss himself, hell even people who aren't fans of the show, are dismissing this disgusting news. You just don't mess with the Whedon side of fandom, you will get ripped apart, and I think with enough support behind Joss himself we can probably make sure this new movie deal bombs and never succeeds. *nods*

Now this? It's like a slap in the face for him. I'm glad Joss responded in his usual Joss-manner, but it's sad at the same time. But seeing as how the majority of fans, and even the original cast, are displeased with this news I'm sure it's setting up for this new film's impending doom. Obviously. You can't take Joss Whedon's baby and mess around with it without there being severe backlash.

It is. The fact that he said, 'And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly.' really told me all I needed to know.
That was one comment on that article that was just itching to reply to:
'Do we NOT remember that the series was spawned from the ORIGINAL movie? So * with ALL due respect to Joss and the series (which I'm a HUGE fan of, as well as Angel), his comment "This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths..." If this is his perception, than the series that, arguably, made him "famous" was also "fed" from a prior project. Hey pot.... this is kettle.'
Talk about not getting it.

Totally missing the point and getting their facts wrong at the same time. Congrats, they fail.

Yep. Like I said I really wanted to reply, but if the internet has taught me one thing, it's that replying to people who just don't get it usually ends in head desking.

This is like doing a Harry Potter reboot in the next six years or so, without J.K. Rowling.
Exactly. Even with the movies, JK Rowling had been part of the decision-making with them had has a strict policy of being with the involvement of anything officially created of her books. I feel like Joss should have those same rights to the character he created, the one that started this legacy, and there's absolutely no way that any kind of remade version can ever live up to the potential and the groundbreaking character that Joss Whedon had written from the start. Hell, with the the 1992 movie with Kristy Swanson, that was his script and Hollywood didn't treat it as he wanted it to be treated.
There are strong reactions to this, and people need to understand that this is a.) unfair to Joss because this was his creation, and with them handling it without notifying him or consulting him about it is just wrong, b.) that the majority of us grew up with Buffy and the need for a reboot is still rather unnecessary (twenty years or so down the line maybe, but this? too freaking soon) and c.) it's a stupid idea in the first place.
I'm sorry people are bitching, but we have the right to bitch and complain.
If it makes you feel even more better, not only did Joss write out his feelings but some of the original cast has commented negatively about it as well. Nobody wants this to happen it seems. So take some confidence that this will definitely tank no matter what happens. *hugs*

There really is no creativity anymore, that is correct. There are so many reboots and remakes these days that it feels like there's no originality anymore. Just plain copying or remaking anything just for the big bucks. It's insulting to the creative minds like Joss Whedon who try their darndest to get their original creations out there and it gets stomped on because nobody understands it (ex. Firefly).
JUST SAY NO TO BUFFY REBOOTS. WHEDON FANS MUST STICK TOGETHER. And I don't care if I sound like a dedicated Whedon fan, I am and I'm loyal to keeping Buffy's name in a good light rather than let something completely bastardize it.

Newsflash: We do, just with Joss Whedon attached. Without Joss, there is no way.
(just listened the the OMWF soundtrack, now I have the need for a BTVS marathon of some sort, nostalgia of the one and only Buffy, kthx)
