Unfortuately, it looks like the Buffy reboot movie will be happening after all, much to everyone's dismay.

This has been rumored for a while, however to have confirmation that it'll actually be happening is rather distressing, because there simply cannot be Buffy without Joss Whedon involved. I'm sorry, but it's true. While sometimes certain reboots can be good and take on an entirely different entity of their own, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a cult classic and shouldn't be touched no matter what. Besides, the entire fanbase is gonna rip this to shreds, which is why I'm laughing and scoffing at the "active fan base waiting for Buffy to return to the big screen" quote because we do, just WITH JOSS WHEDON ATTACHED TO THE PROJECT. IT'S JOSS OR NOTHING BITCHES, GET IT RIGHT! Seriously, I want to know where this "active fan base" resides and how they interpret that into new movie that deals with nothing we want to see.

I predict this to flop and fail harder than anything, because it is just utter blasphemy. Also considering the entire description of what they want to do with it, I'm fearing they'll do what Joss desperately tried to avoid in creating Buffy Summers as a character. :/

Seriously. I mean, I knew there had been rumors circulating for a while now, and quite frankly I thought it wouldn't go through with it, but it seems like they are. And them suggesting that fans are excited for this project is insulting. No, we wanted the original cast with Joss Motherfucking Whedon to be part of a possible future BTVS movie (whether telemovie or otherwise), not some lame-ass reboot that has absolutely nothing to do with the characters that we grew up with and loved for seven freaking seasons.

And without Joss, it just won't be good. Sorry, but that's the truth.

Judging from what the article is saying, they think fans are gonna be "excited" for Buffy to be on the big screen. They obviously don't know the Whedonverse very well, otherwise they would be backing away slowly from the rapid fans who are foaming at the mouth in anger at this news.....

That's the biggest flaw in Hollywood these days, they hardly go for original ideas, instead they remake/reboot movies (classic movies, might I add, particularly recreating foreign films for Americans who are too lazy to read subtitles and complex storylines, but that's something else entirely....) when there shouldn't be a need to anyway. LEAVE THE CLASSICS ALONE, GODDAMMIT.

And this, without Joss Whedon? I cannot even imagine. It's his story, he created the character in the first place, and I cannot foresee this succeeding or getting praise at all.

My guess, it's all about the money. Hollywood seems to think that if they re-boot something at least the fanbase will pay money to see it. I can't help but feel they're also trying to cash in on the vampire craze.

Their thought-process must be "hey, this was successful, why not reboot it and make even more money no matter how ridiculously unnecessary it may be!" Because that's all they ever think about is money, not quality or how respectful they should be to the story.

NO, THERE'S NOT. Geez. WHAT IS WITH ALL THE REMAKES? Remakes of old shows, old movies, old ideas. And there's a difference between a show still having a fanbase and wanting to see a DIFFERENT VERSION OF THE CHARACTER OTHER THAN THE ONE WE FELL IN LOVE WITH.

The fact that you've got the original creator of Buffy mortified and saddened by the idea of a reboot should say something. I'm not entirely sure how the whole "rights" to a creators ideas works in the business, but it must be really insulting to see Hollywood take something you created and muck it up into their own "newer and fresher, non-high school possible Twilight'd" version of such an iconic character. It must be like watching his script/character getting misinterpreted from the first original movie all over again. :(

I think they need a lesson in how fans work. I don't think I have ever in my life encountered a fanbase that was actually enthusiastic to see an onscreen version of their fandom with different actors, a different creator, and a "tone and style that are relevant to today."

And since Joss isn't part of the project at all (not like he would ever want to be anyway) there's no guaranteeing anything that whatever they choose for Buffy to be, would be Buffy that we've come to know and love since the beginning. I'm sorry, but there is only ONE Buffy Anne Summers and she's not going to be replaced by some basic wannabe, no matter who they choose Buffy will always remain SMG for me and everyone else.

Never did watch Buffy, but I just don't understand why they have to do a new version - even if it's a film - of something that last aired less than ten years ago. (Yes, this translates to stay the frak away from Alias, people!)

Not only that, but the fact that they're forgetting that Joss Whedon created the character in the first place since he wrote the script for the original movie, which was always ruined by Hollywood, and that prompted him to take control over his own creation by creating the television series. And this seems to be misusing his creation all over again due to this reboot. It must be a slap in the face and punch in the gut for him to see Hollywood just take his character and mold it to their liking.

Especially the Whedon fandom. We're incredibly dedicated and faithful to everything Joss Whedon and the Buffyverse, so this news is definitely gonna cause a massacre of sorts and I wanna see this fail and flop harder than anything.

I loved Joss's reaction, bittersweet as it is. Along with some of the original cast who are also displeased and unimpressed by it. It makes me feel a little better knowing that nobody is happy with this news. Makes it more probably that it will definitely crash and burn before it even is created. Let us hope!

With fandom, Joss and the original cast pulling together I'm convinced we can make this fail hard. Warner is going to learn their lesson, the sooner the better for them.

I'm fairly sure it isn't going to end well too. Because, completely apart from the fact that Buffy is Buffy and no one else, yes, there are a lot of things Buffy definitely wasn't and I'm afraid they're the sort of things which end up included by rote now. The possibilities of 'getting it wrong' are endless.

Honestly, I would never trust Buffy in the hands of anyone other than Joss Whedon. He created her, and without his input or consulting him on anything would be adding more worries and fears to the "getting it wrong" territory. :/ Even though everyone knows that this will bomb significantly, it still feels me with dread that there was even contemplation of rebooting Buffy without involving Joss.

You're right, this will not end well. Serenity worked, yes, but Serenity is a completely different animal in that it had every single original core cast member AND Joss.

Exactly. It's just a ruse to get people to think that there's a vague interest in this new project, however that shit ain't gonna fly because we Whedon fans are hugely dedicated and there's no fucking way in hell that we would allow BTVS be rebooted into something without Joss Whedon's consent, or approval for his baby to be messed with in any way, shape or form. That's the main reason why he created the series in the first place because the original film didn't do it right how he envisioned it, since he wrote the script and created the character in the first place. So, you know.

Reading Joss's response made me happy he disapproved of this news, and it also stung because it shows, once again, that Hollywood doesn't give a shit about respecting creators and their works. Once again, TPTB takes over, pissing on the little people. :(

It's sad and infuriating, but at the same time I'm glad that there's massive negative response from almost everyone, from fans and original cast members and Joss himself, hell even people who aren't fans of the show, are dismissing this disgusting news. I'm with you. First TPTB screwed up his original Buffy movie (I think he said he made the tv show to show people what the movie was SUPPOSED to be) and now they're going to completely screw up the reboot, no wonder Joss doesn't sound happy.

Joss created Buffy and write the script for the original film, but Hollywood took advantage of his creative mind and screwed it up and he was unhappy about that and that's what prompted him to create his own television series. He wanted to handle his creation the way it should have been.

Wow, really? That's so weird, considering that everyone I've come across, even non-fans of the show, are peeved by this news and thinks it's uncool and unnecessary. Hell, the majority of the people over on ONTD are angry about it, so why should others be ranting about us being upset? It's been at least seven years since the show ended, which is way to early to even consider doing a reboot of anything Buffy-related, especially without consulting with Joss himself for consent or having his approval of this being made.

This is like doing a Harry Potter reboot in the next six years or so, without J.K. Rowling.

Exactly. Even with the movies, JK Rowling had been part of the decision-making with them had has a strict policy of being with the involvement of anything officially created of her books. I feel like Joss should have those same rights to the character he created, the one that started this legacy, and there's absolutely no way that any kind of remade version can ever live up to the potential and the groundbreaking character that Joss Whedon had written from the start. Hell, with the the 1992 movie with Kristy Swanson, that was his script and Hollywood didn't treat it as he wanted it to be treated.

There are strong reactions to this, and people need to understand that this is a.) unfair to Joss because this was his creation, and with them handling it without notifying him or consulting him about it is just wrong, b.) that the majority of us grew up with Buffy and the need for a reboot is still rather unnecessary (twenty years or so down the line maybe, but this? too freaking soon) and c.) it's a stupid idea in the first place.

They are an unfortunate few on your list, but trust me nobody is thrilled with this news because it feels too soon. I've seen arguments comparing it to the many reboots of iconic characters like, say, Superman or Wonder Woman or whatever, but this is simply not the same thing. Buffy has always been at the hands of Joss Whedon, and without him it would be like...that's not Buffy. That's some impostor pretending to be our fabulous Slayer. I betcha anything if this gonna be as horrendously bad as Halle Berry's Catwoman. Why do that to Buffy's good name? I just, I can't. *shudders*

There really is no creativity anymore, that is correct. There are so many reboots and remakes these days that it feels like there's no originality anymore. Just plain copying or remaking anything just for the big bucks. It's insulting to the creative minds like Joss Whedon who try their darndest to get their original creations out there and it gets stomped on because nobody understands it (ex. Firefly).

JUST SAY NO TO BUFFY REBOOTS. WHEDON FANS MUST STICK TOGETHER. And I don't care if I sound like a dedicated Whedon fan, I am and I'm loyal to keeping Buffy's name in a good light rather than let something completely bastardize it.

The fact that they feel there needs to be a reboot in the first place is rather insulting on a personal level, as though people can't enjoy Buffy for what it had been for seven seasons. It's upsetting and disheartening just hearing this news. I wouldn't mind a possibility for another Buffy project in the near future, like ten or twenty years from now, but only seven/eight years after the series ended? That's just ridiculously unnecessary, and mostly for the money of stealing from other people's original concepts and passing it off as their own and claiming that it's "serving the fans" when really, NONE OF THE FANS WANT THIS AT ALL. It's all false saying that there's an active fanbase wanting a movie.

Newsflash: We do, just with Joss Whedon attached. Without Joss, there is no way.
