++ After seventeen years since the site launched, Archive Of Our Own is finally exiting its beta testing phase. They announced this the day after April Fool's when they did the hilarious joke of changing the "beta" on the site to "omega" (as part of the A/B/O, a.k.a. Omegaverse, trope), which was a clever way of announcing the transition from finally getting out of beta the day after. Bless AO3, truly.

++ Everything involving the Artemis II mission around the moon has been utterly captivating.

I actually wasn't aware this was going to happen, so when I heard about that they launched people to the moon I unfortunately thought this was something in relation to SpaceX, but I was thankfully corrected that this was a NASA mission and my mood shifted to being utterly delighted. Just every single update we're getting from their mission thus far has been amazing, because while we've been to the moon before this is the first mission since Apollo 17 in 1972. I'm someone who loves space, and any kind of space exploration where it favors science and the human curiosity of understanding what lies beyond the stars is worthy to be excited about.

comments

++ Over the last several days a long lost early episode of MST3K was found and uploaded (you can watch it here), and some of the missing old Doctor Who episodes were found in a ramshackle collection. "Keep circulating the tapes", indeed.

Stories like this make me happy, because there is a lot of genuinely lost media out there that can miraculously be found in someone's garage sale or random collection. As someone who used to record a lot of things onto VHS back in the day and still have them stored in numerous boxes upon boxes in her own garage, I hope that someday I'll find the method of transferring all of those digitally and uploading it somewhere or keeping it available on DVDs to continue to be passed around. It's why I'm fascinated by watching others who have done similar, not just with lost episodes of shows but just anything, commercials and other programs that have since been lost to time and memory. It's such a time capsule, honestly, and it's something that in this age of streaming we need to appreciate and treasure more when finding these kinds of things. Don't throw away your old DVDs or even VHS tapes, there are ways of preserving them and keeping them because streaming will not last forever.

++ Stephen Colbert is writing a new Lord of the Rings movie. As described in the article:
The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past is set 14 years after the passing of Frodo. Sam, Merry and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam's daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began.

On one hand, Stephen Colbert is notoriously known for being a massive Tolkien nerd and if there was going to be anyone to take on anything Middle-earth it would be him, especially after the cancellation of his late night show this would be a dream come true in terms of his career. On the other hand, however, I can see how this might be viewed this as a cash grab and we've seen franchises be drawn out and milked to death. On the other other hand though, considering that the Tolkien Estate still owns the rights to The Silmarillion and The Unfinished Tales, I do like that they're taking liberties on chapters from the LOTR books that were omitted from the previous films and adapting them in a completely different way. Tolkien wrote chapters and even just paragraphs that could be its own movie alone, so it's not inconceivable, it's just a matter of having the right people involved to make it work.

Also, I do like this idea better than The Search for Gollum.

comments

It's sad knowing how deeply troubled his life had become. I don't always pay that close attention to the personal lives of actors, however every time I heard about him over the years it was something revolving around his constant struggle with addiction which got him into various legal issues, and I kept on hoping that somehow he'd get himself better and back on the right track. I also recently learned about his health problems, too. It's just so sad and tragic.

Aside from his small roles on shows like Criminal Minds, I mostly only knew him from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and, while Xander Harris wasn't my favorite character, Nicholas did fantastically in the role, providing much needed comedic relief along with emotional moments with the rest of the Scoobies.

Rest in peace.

comments

I've been looking at various fanvids being made, and these two stood out to me, with their respective song choices and editing. The first (which captions are to be turned on for dialogue) mostly is around the first season and just her various revenge plots, while the second just centers around Nanno at her best: being brilliantly deranged in the best way. No spoilers are given in either, just Nanno being Nanno, and just a glimpse as to why I enjoy the character so much.

comments

++ We finally got the teaser trailer for Dune Messiah (yes, it's titled Dune: Part Three, but it's adapting Dune Messiah instead of part of the first book like the first two movies and therefore I will call it as such). First, this music in this trailer is phenomenal, just like with the previous trailers for these films it really demonstrates the grand scale of how epic this story is. Secondly, even just seeing little bits has me very, very stoked, especially the mentioning of Ghanima and Leto II's names. I may have some nitpicks with Denis Villeneuve's creative choices here and there throughout these movies, but it doesn't lessen my excitement to see this one. If he manages to get this right, the reactions to it are going to be very interesting, indeed.

++ Felicia Day will crowdfund for a movie spin-off of her webseries, The Guild.

Again, a pleasantly unexpected surprise announcement that totally caught me off guard! The Guild remains one of my favorite first ever webseries that I watched, and I even have the DVDs that were later made available to purchase because I adored it so much. I know that there was a musical stage reading that was done of The Guild with Felicia recently, so naturally this would be the next step. I hope the crowdfunding will be successful so she can make this happen.

++ Girl From Nowhere is a Thai mystery thriller drama that I've recently gotten into. It's an anthology centering around a mysterious girl named Nanno who transfers to different private schools each episode to expose the lies and misdeeds of the students and faculty. It's utterly fascinating. Nanno, who is quickly revealed to the audience as a mysterious immortal entity, is delightfully unhinged, even more so in the second season, and I like that the acts of revenge are done as a way for characters to experience karma of their wrongdoings. Although the drama premiered in 2018 and has two seasons, Girl From Nowhere: The Reset just recently premiered as a re-imagined reboot of the franchise, theorized to be set in an alternate universe with another girl as Nanno, this time played by Becky Armstrong (known mostly from being paired with Freen Sarocha in various Thai GL dramas). I have only just discovered this drama franchise, so I like both actresses who play Nanno. In general, this drama is dark and twisted, but in a fascinating way that I do so enjoy.

comments

Nathan Fillion just announced that there's a Firefly animated show in the works, set to be taken place between the first season and the movie.

This is quite a whiplash in terms of Whedonverse news lately. First, the BTVS sequel series got cancelled, and now we might possibly be getting more Firefly in animated form. What's next? A Dollhouse revival with Dichen Lachman and Enver Gjokaj being a central part of the story? (Actually, that would be pretty dope, ngl.)

With that being said, this came as quite a surprise. There was some vague buzz about Nathan going to tease us with something in relation to Firefly, however we've been hearing these kinds of things for years and it's usually just either an event or some kind of merchandise, and it's become kind of an inside joke among fans about "maybe this time it'll be a season two!" when we know that's not the case. So I wasn't prepared. Since it's still in the development stages I'm not getting my hopes up just yet knowing how fickle the entertainment industry is especially these days, however I can't help but feel tentatively optimistic for the possibility of this actually happening. It seems they're actively determined to make it so, and Nathan is probably the biggest advocate for more Firefly anything. I know some fans are disappointed about this being animated and not live-action, which I completely understand since I also wanted that too, but when taking into account how long it's been unless they were going for something many years after the events of Serenity with the crew, doing animation is probably the safest choice. I also have additional thoughts including my personal concerns about things, but that'll be for another post.

So. A second season of Firefly in animated form. Whodathunkit, huh?

comments

Hulu will not be going forward with the series.

I can't say I'm surprised, but at the same time it is rather shocking considering the amount of buzz this created when the new series was announced. Sarah Michelle Gellar in particular was incredibly excited and even said she wouldn't be onboard with a reboot concept unless she really liked the direction of the story being sold to her, which after talking with Chloe Zhao it clearly did, and she's been hyping everything up about it ever since. Her announcing the series being axed is really heartbreaking, because you can tell she was passionate about at least seeing this project, the first season anyway, get finished and released. I might not have been entirely enthusiastic about this new series, but personal opinions and concerns aside I was curious to see what would've been done with it.

People are making speculations and pointing fingers for why the series fell through, from the script and the final product of the pilot being bad to differences of direction and fight for creative control, but ultimately the truth of the matter is we just don't know. For whatever reason, it just didn't work out.

comments

I recently watched The Edge Of Sleep, a television series from Mark Fischbach (a.k.a. Markiplier on YouTube) which was adapted from a fictional podcast series he did of the same name. It's only one season since that's all what the podcast has, although I read that a second season of the podcast is written and ready to go, but it hasn't been recorded yet. For the show, it premiered on Amazon Prime in 2024 and then was later made available to watch on Tubi, you can also watch it for free on YouTube which is where I ended up viewing it.

( You'd better stay awake. Because if you fall asleep...you're fucked. )

I haven't listened to the podcast, though I read a bit of what the show leaves out so I'm interested to see what the differences are and how the narrative works between the two mediums the story is told in. There's also a novel based on the podcast too, so that'll be on the list as well. In addition to all of this, Mark recently had a movie come out in theaters, Iron Lung, based off of a video game of the same name, which is something I'm also curious in checking out. Needless to say, his career trajectory is going incredibly well and I'm really proud of him.

comments

++ As always, even though I know it'll soon pass, daylight savings has me all fucked up.

++ Seven Seas Entertainment has been acquired by Media Do, which not only it seems the employees of Seven Seas weren't aware of this acquisition until it was announced but it seems that Media Do is going to be using their own AI translations, specifically for manga, as a means of pushing out more product at a faster rate. Although both Media Do and Seven Seas have made notices regarding the concerns, people are, rightfully, upset by this news. Seven Seas wasn't perfect by any means in regards to translations at times, but at least there were human translators. I don't know what will happen, honestly. Even if there are reassurances by Seven Seas claiming that they will still be hiring human translators there is no guarantee this will remain true further down the line. The best one can do at this point is to keep an eye on the situation. I know I will especially in regards to the upcoming volumes of danmei series that I'm assuming will not be altered since they've had translators already in place. Nevertheless, it just really fucking sucks that AI has taken over a lot of places, particularly in publishing and translations.

comments

Challenge #15: How Did the Fandom Snowflake Challenge Go? Did you get all you wanted to get from it? Are there things you're going to carry with you for as long as you can? Are you going to continue to challenge yourself? Continue to connect?

I think it went pretty well. I completed most of the challenges, and the ones that I didn't it was merely because I didn't know how to answer them. Honestly, although I know there is no deadline, I do sometimes feel like there is this pressure to be on time with everyone else answering them. That's more on me than anything though, internalizing a timetable that doesn't exist, and I know I need to let that go. So, I most likely will be returning to at least a couple of them in the near future once I figure out how to conduct my thoughts properly without stressing over it too much.

In the meantime, I'm still going through the various challenges to read and comment on the entries posted from others, something that I highly enjoy doing. This is why I love snowflake_challenge, as it not only encourages participation on their own time but it also allows people in the fandom community to interact and connect with each other, and even befriend one another. Plus, I get a lot of motivation and inspiration from others throughout the challenge, and it jump starts my own creativity.

comments

++ I only vaguely follow the Olympics, as in only the sport events I'm interested in. For the winter Olympics it's figure skating. Because of this, I kinda got myself caught up with the sensation of Alysa Liu and her truly inspiring story and the outcome of her winning gold simply by just being herself, returning back to the sport after deciding retire a couple years prior and doing so on her own terms, and having passion for what she loves and having fun. For all the technical and professional elements of the sports competition, the pure joy and confidence in what she was doing is what most of all take away when watching programs like that. Her performances, her general attitude about life, as well as her kindness, support and excitement towards her fellow competitors, it was quite infectious and it's great to see something this positive and uplifting come out of the Olympics.

++ An official music video was released by the cast of A/B/O Desire for "Master of Desire", the drama's theme song. I literally was all chin!hands watching it! (✿◠‿◠) The video itself is visually stunning, and just seeing them all together for this and with them paired off with their respective couples just made me so happy, specifically that of Gao Tu/Shen Wenlang. Anything with them, please, I need more little itty bitty crumbs of those two!

++ Girls Like Girls is an upcoming film by Hayley Kiyoko, adapted from a book she had wrote that is titled and based off of her iconic 2015 song/music video of the same name. I wasn't aware that she had written a novel nor that this film was in the works at all, but that makes this discovery so much more amazing for me. I do remember back when the video music was released that people were saying that it could be its own story in itself, so, whether or not this was taken into account at the time, I like that Hayley wanted to take a step further with her own creation.

comments

Challenge #13: TALK ABOUT A COMMUNITY SPACE YOU LIKE. It doesn’t need to be your favorite, or the one where you spend the most time (although it certainly can be). Maybe it’s even one that you’ve barely visited. But talk about that space and how it helps support fannish community.

I'm going to actually say Dreamwidth.

As someone who joined online fandom via LiveJournal ages ago and have seen the shifts and changes of the online fandom community over the years, from the fandom migration to other platforms and how things have altered with the presence of social media, I think Dreamwidth has kept up what I once enjoyed about the LJ fandom community. I do use Tumblr for the pretty graphics and visit Reddit every now and then for updates on things, but ultimately when I think about fannish community I think of something that is more interactive, more personable, and less judgmental. And that's what Dreamwidth is for me. It reminds me of the times when online journaling offered something for everyone, fandom related or not, and was a place to express your thoughts and opinions clearly on your own journal and in community discussions, engage in conversations with others. I participate in fannish conversations and challenges, such as snowflake_challenge as an obvious example, even going onto different people's journals to talk and squee about fannish interests. It's something that I miss when it comes to the fandom community interaction as a whole, the engagement of just talking with people about things, having back and forth civil discussion in comment threads. Dreamwidth offers that to me in ways that other places cannot.

That's not to say that other fandom places online I visit don't have value and aspects that I enjoy, it's just that I think I feel more comfortable and safer in the controlled environment that Dreamwidth provides. It may be smaller in comparison to what LJ used to be, it's definitely not on the same wavelength as Tumblr and I do wish more people would join/return to DW, although I must admit to liking how quiet it is here compared to the social media reactionary drivel you often see. Plus, it's challenges like this that get me off my ass to actually write and participate, and I like that kind of push. I don't have to do it, but I want to. Because I miss this kind of thing in fandom, y'know?

comments

From what I remember, anonymity on the Internet has always been celebrated in the past, and online safety was heavily encouraged and promoted especially towards kids. Now, the opposite is happening where if you're not revealing your real name, age, or even your face online then you're automatically suspicious, which is ridiculous and such a bizarre 180 from the online safety etiquette that was drilled into me as a younger teenager (and truthfully it makes me feel horrible for the younger generations who are growing up online like this, not just for the privacy issues but also for not being able to be embarrassing online without it following you around in real life because of it). Of course, corporations pushing for this are doing so for their own agendas which is frustrating in itself, but that makes it even scarier considering all that's happening in the world now. *sigh*

comments

I used to have a program ages ago (Microsoft's Picture It!) which I created various things including graphics for the fanmixes I did way back when, but that was on an old computer and that program has long since been discontinued and defunct. I've been attempting to look for comparable programs, however my findings lead me to being confused and overwhelmed and a bit apprehensive on the legitimacy since some places are websites only instead of a program you download onto your computer, and even then I don't want to download anything that is going to take forever to load or cause problems, which I know is a risk for anything these days anyway.

So, my request is mainly for the graphic makers and vidders in fandom: what programs do you use, your pros and cons for them, how much of a learning curve there is and if there is good tutorial out there.
++ We have the official teaser for the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, which I'll be honest the only thing I care about from this is the return of Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones. The interactions between Jessica and Matt in The Defenders was truly the biggest highlight and I've always wanted more of that, and we're finally getting it.

++ I'm still not on the Heated Rivalry train, but I'm happy for all those who are enjoying it. It's just interesting how the show gained so much traction so quickly since it premiered, and really sometimes you just don't know what is really going to resonate with so many people. Perhaps it's the FOMO some have, hopping on trends and popularity of something, whatever it is every single time I see someone talking about it in the wild and not in a fandom space it's just fascinating. I get slightly taken aback because this isn't usually something that most would talk about, the show isn't made for the broader audience in mind (at least to my knowledge, it's a mature queer story with explicit scenes), so it's kind of a pleasant shock. I mean, when the Major of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, recommended the city's citizens read the book for free during the winter storm and the Prime Minister of Canada meets with the cast and pays tribute to the show? That's kinda amazing.

comments

(Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

I'm skipping around the challenge a bit since I'm still constructing my answers for the other ones as I'm way behind at the moment, but this one is one that I know I can answer easily since I definitely have a lot of favorite tropes. I answered last years trope challenge with only one specific trope which I still maintain is a top favorite in recent years, but this will be a more extensive list. I like being given prompts where I can give insightful answers to, I like the level of engagement it provides with interacting with others with fannish interests, from just those on your friendslist to others who participated in this challenge. Which is another thing, last year was the first time I actively participated in the challenge by linking my posts to the community and reading/commenting on others who also participated in the challenge, as well. I miss fandom engagement like that, and that's why I like doing this challenge every year.

comments

Okay, so this one is a bit different because it's a fanmade video for one of Britney Spears' songs, "Cinderella", edited with various music videos and footage of Britney herself as an unofficial music video. The creator of this fanmade video, which was uploaded back in the day before YouTube existed (I remember downloading it off of KaZaa), did such a great job with matching moments and even doing their best to sync up clips that made it seem like Britney was singing the song. So despite the lower quality it still holds up to this day as being among my favorite fanmade unofficial music videos done.

Also, as an aside, this is something that AI can never do. There is practice and skill to creating a piece of fanmade work like this, and nothing compares to the blood, sweat and tears of dedicated fans spending hours on a video editing software and sharing that hard work and creativity even to a handful of people.

comments

++ We had rainstorms from Christmas all through New Years, which was a great present for me because, yay rain and thunder! Unfortunately, our backyard did get a little flooded because of how intense the downpour was (it cleared up within hours, don't worry) and a lot of stuff did get blown around the backyard....one item actually flew out from our backyard and across the street. So, that was fun to retrieve. With that being said, it was a pretty chill Christmas and we welcomed 2026 with minimal fireworks due to the rain.

++ There is a New Years friending meme currently up and active.

++ I will be participating in this years snowflake_challenge, something I've enjoyed doing in previous years and last year was one that I was very active in commenting on other people's posts on various challenges which was fun. I'll be doing that again this year, I just need to find the right moment to do so because I've been kind of stressed this week alone with some personal things that I truly haven't had enough time to actually sit down and write something.

++ VERY IMPORTANT NEWS: I don't know how widespread this is at the moment, but it seems that LiveJournal is undergoing a recent change that will drastically affect all users, including Russian users. denise has already made a post welcoming Russian users who are importing their journals from LJ to DW due to this situation, but she has also appeared in various individual places in fandom communities imploring all people who still have access to their LJ accounts (personal journals or communities) to backup/import them to DW immediately. This is quite literally an LJ Exodus 2.0, but this does seem like this could really be final for many people, especially if they're attempting to gatekeep the website from anyone who isn't Russian or complies with Russian law, which isn't surprising considering the way things have been going since the ownership change years ago but it's still devastating to witness all the same. The fact that LJ used to be incredibly lively and has, gradually overtime, turned into a virtual graveyard of what once was a rich and thriving website featuring various communities (fandom, personal, other subcultures) is heartbreaking, and to lose all of that history would be even more so.

If you still have an LJ account please back it up, and if you know someone who does still have access to their account(s) also please notify them of this so they can also back up their information while they still can. Either importing to DW, saving and transporting fanfic to AO3, using the Wayback Machine, whatever possibility is available to preserve LJ/fandom history.

comments
