Oh Monday, you move too slow.
Oct. 15th, 2018 03:17 pm++ Iron Fist has been cancelled, the first of the Netflix Marvel lineup to get canned. I'm not entirely surprised, to be honest. I never watched because I just didn't care for it, but from what I've read in comparison to the other shows, it was considered the weakest, right alongside The Defenders.
But this has led many people worried since this may seem like a decision influenced by the new Disney streaming service that will be taking over soon. At least, those are the speculations that I've been reading, nothing has been confirmed, to my knowledge, that this was the actual reason. Although, I have frequently wondered about the longevity of the Netflix Marvel lineup as a whole, because while they have their individual shows they do all interconnect with each other. How many seasons are they planning on having for each show? Do they have a plan for what the endgame might be for them all down the road? If one ends up getting cancelled does that mean that the characters will appear in one of the other ones, since they know each other? Or even start another new series, for example people are speculating that they might do this with creating Heroes For Hire and Daughters of the Dragon, but who knows if that'll actually work. I know that it's been mentioned that The Defenders most likely won't have a second season, since it seemed like a limited series anyway, but if all of the shows are to end at some point I would rather them all kind of coming together again for one last hurrah, y'know?
I honestly don't know. Aside from the uncertainty for the future of these shows in the long run, there's just lot happening with this "streaming wars" nonsense that I just don't like in general.
++ Other television news: the Good Omens miniseries trailer dropped and honestly, I'm not feeling it. I read the book and I enjoyed it, but the casting for both Crowley and Aziraphale bugs me a lot. They're not how I envisioned the characters at all. I remember seeing the promo pictures when they were released and hated the character designs, and seeing the trailer makes me even more unimpressed. So, I don't think I'll be watching, which apparently Neil Gaiman has reminded us that was completely okay. The trailer for American Gods S2 also came out which, with all the news surrounding its production troubles, I'm rather apprehensive about. It won't come until next year, so we'll see what happens, or if this might be the end of the show after the season premieres.
++ I've got to catch up on some of my shows, which seems to be a big theme as of late. Have you ever felt that way, having shows that you like or even love, but somehow you're just not in the mood to watch them? For me, I have to be in the right mood and mindset, especially if I'm to binge-watch episodes/seasons of my shows. I have seen the new Doctor Who (which I very much enjoyed, Thirteen is adorable!) but not much else at the moment. However, I have been on a huge horror kick, which isn't new but with it being October and nearing Halloween that kick has certainly intensified. So that has kind of preoccupied my time a bit, in terms of my watching habits.

Date: 2018-10-16 12:55 am (UTC)Well - with one exception. I can *always* watch the Great British Baking Show. :D
But any more, most 'live' or 'cable' tv shows leave me cold (it's why I don't have cable), and I find i just...can't muster up the interest. I *do* binge-watch older stuff - I'm plowing through Mad Men for the third time, and recently re-watched all the 'Call the Midwife' episodes.
But a lot of new tv just has nothing about it that draws me in *at all*.
I will most likely go see the Good Omens, because other than Sebastian Stan as Bucky and Chris Evans as Steve, nothing lives up to the imagination. :D
Oh, and RDJ as Tony Stark. I mean - clones? Twins? Sheer perfection.

Date: 2018-10-16 01:22 am (UTC)Yeah, I feel the same way. It's not that I won't find anything new that entices me, but unless it's something that I've been looking forward to for a while I'll most likely discovery that new thing after it has premiered or has a completed season that I can binge-watch. It's how I end up having newer fandoms all the time, because someone recommended it to me or I see it everywhere, decided to try it out, and become obsessed if I end up liking it.
Also, most new shows nowadays seem to be reboots/remakes/revivals which is a huge part of the problem. I hate it and I wish this trend would just die out already.

Date: 2018-10-16 01:30 am (UTC)I'm pretty tired of reboots, since they seem to reboot the same thing over and over. Either do something original, or dig deeper! We don't need anymore Batman origin movies, holy gods.
no subject
Date: 2018-10-16 01:50 am (UTC)That, or they reboot things far too soon from the original. Like, the attempting to reboot shows from the early 00s, acting like they're "modernizing" it. Like ??? Those are already "modern", you don't need to reboot something that is still quite relevant and also still fresh in people's minds. If you do this to "modernize" something, does that mean anything can be rebooted repeated every five or ten years after it ended? Will it just be a never-ending cycle of reboots to "modernize" it for the younger generation who, god forbid, doesn't know the original and thinks that an updated version will add something different (which these reboots never do, more likely than not they're void and empty of the magic that made the original thrive during its time).
This reboot culture is not only annoying in that way, it's quite obvious that it's only banking on nostalgia. Because that's what the industry likes to do, it's not about original stories but about trying to milk the cash cow dry.

Date: 2018-10-16 01:56 am (UTC)And i *like* the idea of some reboots - I'd *love* to see a more modern idea of Space 1999 - absolutely no one needs a reboot of Magnum PI or The Love Boat.
And mostly, it seems they're just doing it for the 'look how much more clever i am with this than they were/look how i send up the original' kind of thing, I dunno. I don't think the reboots are done with love.
no subject
Date: 2018-10-16 02:18 am (UTC)Also add in the "look at the bigger budget we have, we can do it better" with that and that's the basic formula of reboots in general. Which having a bigger budget for better effects isn't inherently bad, but with the "we'll be way better" mentality it does a disservice to its predecessor and it often doesn't end well, because a bigger budget doesn't mean better quality. Sure, some of those originals didn't have a big budget or even seem a bit outdated, but there is something special about them, and most times it's about having the balance of good writing, fantastic actors, production, and a quality of that particular time that you just cannot recreate.
And you're right, most times these reboots aren't done with love. They're done with one thing in mind: hopping on the bandwagon to make money. That's it.
Same with revivals, too. Revivals are a huge hit-or-miss because, while some can work, most don't because they either add nothing new or they tend to ruin to memory of the original (see: the Roseanne reboot, which they're now rebooting the reboot and it's like, ugh, why?)

Date: 2018-10-16 02:25 am (UTC)I like the idea of a bigger budget for things that make sense, like sci-fi or fantasy, but there's not that interesting about a bigger-budget 'One Day At a Time'.
Oh, well - i just am glad that I have access to the things i like. :D

Same here. I know that I complain about the endless cycle of unnecessary reboots because it does annoy me, but at the end of the day, I know that I can't change any of that. I'm not going to watch them anyway. I can just watch the originals/the things I like and just be happy with that. :)

Binge watching requires a very specific mindset, because you're literally sitting down and watching X nonstop. There's some stuff that's more digestible on a general basis, ie Doctor Who, but things like Daredevil or JJ? That's a whole different game.
no subject
Date: 2018-10-16 02:55 am (UTC)That is very true about binge-watching. Like, some shows are easier to watch nonstop because they are lighter in content and they're more like comfort food in a way, but other shows require more brain work and to be more attentive, and their content of a more serious tone that you need to sit and digest and sometimes you're not really in the mood for that. I have a few shows like that where I still need to finish the seasons but I just haven't gotten around to it because, while they're good and I am looking forward to finishing them, I just need to be in that right mindset to sit and binge those episodes.

Date: 2018-10-16 03:23 am (UTC)I know what you mean, there are a few new shows in Netflix that I’ve been curious to check out, but for some reason I always feel really unmotivated when it comes to it...The shows I can easily binge are comedy shows I find, I guess maybe because they're only 20 minutes long usually and very quick to digest, whereas I have to kind of work myself up to a lot of drama shows and be in the right mood. ETA Although I’m not sure it’s just about the length of comedies for me actually, because there are certainly longer shows like Buffy and Gilmore Girls that I could still bingewatch whenever, so maybe it’s something more to do with shows that feel really heavy and serious idk
And I was a bit surprised about Iron Fist being cancelled when it seemed like season 2 was getting a more positive reception, but then hardly anyone seems to care that much about the cancellation, so not all that positive I guess! People just didn’t seem to care that much for the main character

Date: 2018-10-16 05:17 am (UTC)That's how I feel, as well. 30-minute comedies are good for binge-watching, absolutely, but so is something lighthearted or shows that I consider comfort food. I can binge Brooklyn Nine-Nine the same way I can marathon Leverage, but heavier stuff, shows that have a complicated or intense plot, I have to be able to mentally prepare myself for before sitting down and watching episodes back-to-back. And sometimes I'm just not in the mood for that, even if I want to still watch it at some point.
but then hardly anyone seems to care that much about the cancellation, so not all that positive I guess! People just didn’t seem to care that much for the main character
I've heard that while some think the second season was better than the first, it still wasn't exactly great, either. Also, combined with how horrible the reaction/reviews were for the first season and the underwhelming reaction to Danny Rand in The Defenders, even if the second season actually improved the show many view it as a "too little, too late" kinda thing. Also, let's face it, Netflix doesn't really care about bad reviews since they continue to renew shows that are universally panned by critics/audiences alike, it's all about the ratings. And if most were unimpressed with Iron Fist from the beginning, there was no way they would tune into a second season.
So, I'm not really surprised it was cancelled. I'm just curious and a bit worried about what this means for the future of the Marvel series on Netflix.

Date: 2018-10-16 09:23 am (UTC)I really liked The Defenders and thought it was way better than Iron Fist. Yes, the story was a little meh, but I loved everyone working together.
Even though I didn't love Iron Fist S2, it was better than S1 and the ending was cool. It seemed to promise good things for another season. So now I'm more annoyed by the show getting canceled than I thought I would be.
coming together again for one last hurrah
That would be awesome!
I wouldn't mind more small crossovers, but there's also the scheduling to consider. Finn Jones will probably be able to find a new job easily. Unless they have separate contracts for their own shows and The Defenders/appearances on the other shows, he is not bound to Netflix/Marvel anymore.
I haven't read the book, but I thought the Good Omens trailer was a little off. Maybe it just doesn't look good.
Since I'm writing my MA thesis at the moment, binge-watching is not really an option...I'll still try to find time for Daredevil S3. However, I have read an article (for my thesis!) about binge-watching and Netflix is using a pretty loose definition of what it is anyway. It's watching 2-6 episodes in one sitting. That's it. Nothing about consecutive days or one weekend per season. With that definition, I binge-watch a lot because I often do two episodes in a row.
It's easy to just watch the shows I watch on a weekly basis. But with shows like Jessica Jones or House of Cards, I definitely have to be in the right mood.

Date: 2018-10-16 06:29 pm (UTC)I think after all the hype surrounding The Defenders, it was ended up becoming disappointing and underwhelming, personally speaking. I mean, don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved seeing them meeting and working together and interacting (especially Matt and Jessica, their bantering was the best), but the show didn't really utilize it very well. I was expecting a lot more than what we were given. Along with the awkwardly bad pacing, plotting, editing choices, it overall was a huge letdown and rather meh, imho.
I wouldn't mind more small crossovers, but there's also the scheduling to consider.
This is true. I think they're churning out newer seasons of their shows faster now, so it might be possible depending. I think most of the actors would be down for doing small crossovers, so I'm hoping in the future it'll happen at some point.
I haven't read the book, but I thought the Good Omens trailer was a little off. Maybe it just doesn't look good.
Yeah, I mean, my expectations from the book aside, the trailer did not sell me at all. It just looked and felt so off, idk. :/
It's watching 2-6 episodes in one sitting. That's it. Nothing about consecutive days or one weekend per season.
That totally makes sense, and honestly that's what I do, too. I don't straight up binge-watch full seasons in one sitting, that would take up ridiculous amounts of hours that I don't have and just simply impossible. I do, however, binge several episodes or space them out over several days.

Date: 2018-10-16 06:58 pm (UTC)There is a reason why Netflix releases seasons on Friday. A lot of people will sit down Friday after work, start a show and will be finished by Sunday. I once watched a season of House of Cards in two days (I was about to attend a conference and it was the only show on the schedule I hadn't watched which irked me a little. In the end, the guy doing the HoC presentation canceled a day before the conference -.-) and that wasn't really fun. Fast for me is one week and that is also most enjoyable for me (2-3 episodes a day). Catching up on B99 was a lot faster, but it is easier to watch twenty minutes here and there.

Date: 2018-10-16 05:00 pm (UTC)I still watch and enjoy the rest of the shows despite the massive disappointment that was The Defenders. Disney will be having its own streaming service (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney_streaming_service) soon, which while that doesn't seem too bad on the surface it's kind of been worrisome for people it regards to what they plan on having. Disney owns Marvel now, and they'll be planning on having their own MCU television series line (they're hoping for a Loki and/or Scarlet Witch series to start with) and this has created some worry about what will happen to the Netflix Marvel series and other Marvel shows on other networks, whether they'll be transferred directing to the Disney service, or straight up cancelled, or what. That's why the cancellation of Iron Fist has people worried on what the future holds for the rest of the Marvel shows.
Never mind that these "streaming wars" is about content ownership and competition with one another, and most people don't want to have multiple subscriptions to different services just to watch one or two of their shows, y'know?

Date: 2018-10-17 07:32 pm (UTC)Hat definitely makes you wonder... the only marvel shows on tv (networks) now are Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Legion... I don’t know if the one with Amy Acher was picked up for a second season... mmmh... I think this will be the last season for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But I would love for Legion to go on... and I cannot see it on a Disney platform...
I would be interested in a Loki series, but Only with Tom as Loki... but Disney to me means “for kids” so that’s not too good for me... I don’t want another show like the DC shows on the CW

Think of it as "corporate owned" rather than Disney-specific, if you will, which is what all of this means. The general Disney brand is to promote family-friendly material, but Disney the Corporation owns a lot of things that aren't necessarily in that same realm. I mean, Deadpool is Marvel and we all know that's not family-friendly, but it's been reassured that the Deadpool movies will remain R-rated. But aside from that, who knows. Again, this is why with the whole "Disney owns Marvel" situation in general has many worried about what this means in terms of controlling content in the future, because what has been reassured is safe for now might not be further down the line, etc.
