I don't know if it's a cultural thing or just individual based, but I do agree that it is uncommon hearing about someone retiring from singing at such a young age, especially with having such a good long run of it and has mass popularity at such a level like hers. I know that it came as a shock to many fans, myself included, when she made her announcement. Apparently she had been planning this for a while and decided that now, with her recently just celebrating her 41st birthday, it was time. She probably feels like this career has been successfully fulfilled, and is ready to start a new chapter in her life.

And to be fair, 25 years is quite a good legacy to have to your name, which Namie has rightfully earned. Besides, I would rather her retire on a high note and on her own terms than feel like she has an obligation to uphold.
