The thing about the rape storyline is that it ups the ante with the Avatar/Virtual guy. He goes from just some computer glitch who kills people during their down time to something a lot more malicious, and I think that may be important to the plot.

As to the whole "one sided" thing, it kinda obviously isn't one-sided. Roger is very adamant about the need to shut down the Modules, and there may've been other opinions that didn't get voiced 'cause the loud people were too loud.
