It Must Be Tuesday (post-Christmas edition)
Post-Christmas craziness, automatically I really want to go after-holiday shopping. But knowing that stores are going to be incredibly busy and crowded with people doing the exact same thing, I decided it's best to wait several days. Though Christmas has come and gone, I still have the spirit of the season because I get excited for the shopping I do afterwards, especially since many stores are going to be having clearance sales before getting prepared for the new year. I also have some nifty gifts cards to use that I recently recieved, so there's the main plus for buying things. Still, the craziness is almost as bad as Black Friday. And it's raining outside, which means the roads are going to be filled with crazyfolk.
I've been looking into some films lately, either upcoming releases or already in theaters, since I hardly ever went to the movie theaters at all this year. So, with some researching I've found some films that have captured my interest.
Curse of the Golden Flower, starring Chow Yun-Fat and Gong Li. Directed by Yimou Zhang.
Following up on the background information about this film, along with seeing the previews and trailers, this looks like quite a story to see on screen. Aside from the fabulous visual of the scenery and costumes, there's also the amazing two international celebrities, Chow Yun-Fat and Gong Li (there's also Jay Chou, a famous Taiwanese singer, although I have no interest in him personally). This is probably one of the films I'll definitely see on the big screen, regardless.
Pan's Labyrinth, starring Ivana Baquero. Directed by Guillermo del Toro.
I've already commented and expressed my immediate impression of this amazing-looking film, which is a fantasy-thriller unlike any other; a crossover between a gothic-fairytale from the creative imagination of a little girl to a devastating historical reality which she is escaping from. It's visually stunning, and another factor is that it's a foreign film that'll be released on December 29th, which hopefully it'll be a worldwide release and not selective theaters. Another film that is a must on my list.
Blood and Chocolate, starring Agnes Bruckner, Hugh Dancy, and Olivier Martinez. Directed by Katja von Garnier.
Admittingly, I haven't read the fantastically acclaimed novel which this is adapted from, however I have heard great things about it. Judging from the trailer it looks to be an nice werewolf story (and ironically, it's been produced by the same people who made the Underworld movies, also dealing with werewolves); a modern romance about a girl trying to figure out where she belongs, either with her own kind or amongst the humans. There will be differences between the book and the film-version, of course, and there will be fans debating on it, however I think I would probably read the book before viewing it on the big screen. Just to have a better perspective, that's all.
Nancy Drew, starring Emma Roberts. Directed by Andrew Fleming.
Yes, that's right ladies and gentlemen, a modern day Nancy Drew film. The trailer may or may not impress hardcore fans of the legendary character, considering the Hollywood-esque of its appearance. Though one has to take into consideration that Nancy Drew has evolved ever since the 1930s/1940s, and there's been numerous movies, television series and books/graphic novels of the character and her adventures. I personally think the trailer looks cute and interesting, and for those wanting to know why Veronica Mars hss been compared to Nancy Drew might want to consider looking into this upcoming 2007 adaptation of her mysterious adventures (or look into the history of the character in general). It might not be a masterpiece, but it looks fun to watch.
Children of Men, starring Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, and Michael Caine. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón.
Not only is it directed by Alfonso Cuarón, who I adore with his direction style, but the overall plot for the story really intrigued me. Actually, the very topic of possible human extinction due to unknown causes is what I was recently studied in my college biology class this passed semester. This film, adapted from a book of the same name, explores the terrifying growth within a dystopian near-future where women have been infertile and unable to give life to a next generation. I really do want to see this, because I like films that challenge the mind and make the audience think.
NANA 2, starring Mika Nakashima and Yui Ichikawa. Directed by Kentarô Ôtani.
Obviously, this isn't a U.S. film therefore I cannot see it in theatersunless I travel to Japan just to see it theatrically, however I did see the first NANA film and I loved it, and was thrilled to hear they were filming a sequel. For those not in the know, NANA is an adaptation from a manga of the same name. It's a story of two girls who share the exact same name (Nana), however are different of lifestyles and personalities, but despite in that the stories involve their growing friendship together, hence the first film. The sequel had some controvery because of recasting, nevertheless the ever-so-lovely Mika Nakashima continues playing the role of Nana Osaki (yay!) Chances of seeing this in theaters are slim-to-none as mentioned, though I'm waiting until it gets released onto DVD with subtitles to view it.
Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll, starring Marilyn Manson and Lily Cole. Directed by Marilyn Manson.
Say what you will about his music or how he's portrayed in the media's spotlight, but I personally think that Marilyn Manson is an incredibly intelligent, artistically inclined and well-spoken man. This will be Manson's first directorial debut, which is an exploration of how Lewis Carroll had gotten his inspirations for writing such stories like Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through The Looking Glass, which are perfectly fit for his creeptastic and imaginative style since the original stories were never actually intended for children (or, more specifically, the content was considered to bizarrely frightening for younger children due to its surrealism). I'm greatly looking forward to this debut of Manson's, not only as a fan of Marilyn Manson but also because I like the different ways of interpreting the workings of Lewis Carroll, especially the darker, morbidly bizarre adaptations.
On a different note, I find it funny that yesterday Doctor Who: The Christmas Invasion was reairing on the SciFi Channel here in the States, and overseas the premiere of Doctor Who Christmas Special: The Runaway Bride, the first of the third season. Fitting obviously, but still funny. Still saddened that Rose Tyler is gone, but hopefully it'll still be a good season. It has David Tennant, so of course!
Recommendation of the Day: Foxxi MisQ - A-L-I-V-E (PV), the third music video off of their album. I just love this song, and can easily beat "Tha F.Q's Style" as my favorite of theirs so far. The song is incredibly fast-paced, it's upbeat and fun to dance to and I love their voices. Foxxi MisQ is a Japanese female trio hip-hop group. Official Website. ♥
